Chiefs Links: Browns sign Benjamin Watson

I have to say, while I am not shocked by this, I am a little bewildered. Watson has not been linked to the Chiefs this free agency period but now that he is officially off the market I wonder why Pioli never took a look at him. The Chiefs have mentioned that they are interested in adding a TE and Watson is only 29. My guess is there are a few players the Chiefs are interested in drafting. Pioli mentioned at the NFL Combine that he thought there were some good prospects in this year’s class.

Fro Pro Football Talk:

Benjamin Watson is a Cleveland Brown.

Watson, a free agent tight end who played his entire six-year career with the New England Patriots, has signed a three-year deal with the Browns. As first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, it’s a $12 million contract with $6.35 million guaranteed.

A league source who confirmed the deal to PFT says the $6.35 million guaranteed will be paid out completely in the first year of the deal.

The 29-year-old Watson played in all 16 games for the Patriots last season, starting seven and catching 29 passes for 404 yards and five touchdowns.

His name is Anthony McCoy. Most people think he will go in the 3rd or 4th round.

I've read stuff about them being "strongly interested" in the USC tight end...name escapes me.

Have not heard about Lilja, but I am not surprised about Watson. He is getting long in the tooth and the organization likely wants a younger Tony type guy.

I'm not shocked at all by this. This draft class is pretty deep at TE. My guess is we pick one up in the draft. Now to figure out what positions the other 7 Chiefs picks will be.

I heard Lika failed his physical...

I agree Pat, I really thought that this is a guy we'd look at bringing in. Especially given that we have openly said we'd like to get better at TE. Pioli must have a plan for the position, or a good reason not to pick him up. I'm gonna trust Pioli on this one. If Watson would have been worth bringing in, Pioli would be the one to know, he drafted him and watched him grow his entire career. If he was the answer to the TE position, Pioli would have been first in line to bring him in for a visit.

On a side note, has anybody heard anything about Lilja? I haven't heard about him going on any visits or anything. The only thing I've heard is from an ESPN chat from their "expert" on the AFC West Bill Williamson. He said there is definately interest from the Chiefs side. I trust you guys more for my Chiefs news updates than I do ESPN, so I didn't know if you had heard anything new?

GO CHIEFS!!
