Chiefs Links: Peter King on Thomas Jones

Thomas Jones will visit Kansas City today. All the factors argue against anyone giving Jones real money. He carried the ball 376 times, including playoffs, last season at 31. What 32-year-old back is worth any sort of money, coming after three straight seasons in which he carried it more than 900 times? I say it’s Jones — because he will be supremely motivated to stick it to the Jets for jettisoning him after three straight standout years. I’d pay Jones, then team him with Jamaal Charles to try to get 175 between-the-tackle carries out of him.

P.Allen we do Not take Berry because we need scorers and the best in this draft is DEZ. Besides there are a half dozen good safety prospects of whom Berry is one. Remember the HYPE on Dorsey, the next Reggie White. Berry is a relatively inexperienced player who had 1 year with a pro coach and everyone's on the bandwagon. I watched this years bowl game and was not impressed as he didn't stand out like pro talent should. Bowe is a BUST!, and we have a supreme need at receiver.

mmoore:

Why do you say we don't take Berry? I know 5 is usually high to take a safety but Berry is not your usual safety. He has drawn comparisons to Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu. I think the Chiefs could really use a difference maker like that on their D.

As for Okung, while I could live with the pick, I don't think the Chiefs are going to take him. I think they like Albert at LT and O'calahan at RT, which means they probably only want to upgrade at G and C.

McClain would be a little bit of a reach but not too much. I would prefer him to Okung. We need better MLB's to run this 3-4 scheme. I think they will start DJ next year and McClain would be a nice player to go along side him.

As for NT, the best early 2nd round option available will be Terrance Cody out of Bama but I think he will get snagged near the end of the 1st round, maybe by the Chargers.

There are a couple of FA's out there the Chiefs might take a look at.They might also consider trading for Shaun Rogers from Cleveland. Crennel was their head coach when they brought him in.

you guys are nuts! WE have the best coaching staff? The OC and DC were NOT in the league last year. So what-they have a few rings from having the best QB of the decade. Tell me what they won as head coaches? NO Show Bowe is a BUST! move on already. I could care less about the fan base or filling seats at Arrowhead. Winning is what this is about, not your fantasy worlds. Pioli won exec of the year on a extremely lucky sixth round draft pick named Brady. Seeing is believing and yes I have hope from the new staff. Don't go handing out the Oscars before the performannce.

On a free message board asking the host to do better with his claims is not ok???

Apparently you haven’t seen the huge turnaround that pat has made here. Relax kid. So angry. You must be a raider fan.

Nice debate mmoore. like Pat I want proof

I have already told you multiple times that I think they will either trade for or draft an extra receiver and that I don’t know as of yet who that may be.
I think the Chiefs will draft Eric Betty if he is on the board. If he isn’t I think they will take McClain or Dez Bryant.

this is the 1st post Pat were you address this.

No way we take berry. Dez to much of a stretch. Okung or mcclain at 5. I can see us taking tate at second pic. Any insight pat on good nt that could be there in second?

Apparently you haven't seen the huge turnaround that pat has made here. Relax kid. So angry. You must be a raider fan.

Yes I turned the heat on you backbone.

If you are going to debate folks in the comments then you must also provide evidence to back up your claims. Thus far you have only disagreed with everyone and complained that the Chiefs fix the receiver position. When I have suggested that I think they will fix it, you demanded I provide you with an article on what guy they will use to plug the hole.

I have already told you multiple times that I think they will either trade for or draft an extra receiver and that I don't know as of yet who that may be.

You have suggested repeatedly that no one is "going out on a limb" to throw out a name. Thus, I suggested you tell us what you think by entering the reader submission contest.

I think the Chiefs will draft Eric Betty if he is on the board. If he isn't I think they will take McClain or Dez Bryant.

I think there is also a chance they will try to get Golden Tate if he is available in the 2nd round.

Congrats Pat. Way to turn the heat on me. Yes the fan sitting behind the computer. The 1 who has no access no ability to get close to the ones who actually call the shots. You can do better then this. Dont run when one fan calls to see what you have the ability to do. Be a leader in this Chiefs fan websites.

Pat Allen I just wanted a article to get me to the edge of my seat. Something the eyes will gravitate to. To say hey Chief Fans you HAVE to read.

Nope. Its on me now.

Why don't you go out on a limb backbone? We are having a Reader Article Submission Contest. Why not submit and tell us what you think the Chiefs should do?

Here is a limb for you. The Chiefs will improve the WR position by resigning Chris Chambers, having Bowe for an entire season, developing Quentin Lawrence

I heard that 3 months ago at the end of the season.

...by drafting or trading for another receiver before next season

going out on the limb 3 days after FA started and fans watch Bolden go elsewere, go out out on the limb and give me a story about who that WR is.

Backbone:

I don't know why you keep talking about going out on limbs. All we do on this web site is go out on limbs.

Here is a limb for you. The Chiefs will improve the WR position by resigning Chris Chambers, having Bowe for an entire season, developing Quentin Lawrence and by drafting or trading for another receiver before next season.

53,315 were at the last game of the year. Sure the fan base of this site would defer. But the $$$ fans will not be happy.

with THIS year being draft draft draft….you must build the foundation first…we don’t even have decent backups…we don’t have half of a team yet….

So bring in a RB that can outplay the only starter the $$$ fans fill is fine. Why show the Fans who dont look at any of these sites that bringing in FA can improve this team. Yet the excuses come faster then the FA signings. Last year and this year. Excuses.

Still no one wants to go out on the limb about how to improve WR positions.

oh right, and you don't have those 2 picks, from the draft that has a lot of talent, and a staff that is the best in the league at evaluating said talent

oh please jones wouldnt hurt the fan base...I love Charles more than most, and I think we need a 2nd back, this guy isnt a LONG TERM answer, if he WAS, then charles and charles' fans would have something to worry about....but if jones comes in and plays well...GREAT, maybe we will have a steady offense, he can bruise it inside, he can catch, he can block...hes a locker room guy....

hurt the fan base?

the fans butthurt over a lack of free agent signing need to get REAL...this OFFSEASON, we only landed the BEST OC candidate...the BEST DC candidate...brought back emmitt thomas...got rid of the junk on the staff...added front office help...I mean really? you are upset that we didnt overpay someone from the worst free agent class in awhile....its like a bad draft, they happen, this draft happens to be the 1983 calibur...HMMMM, while next year, the money total could go DOWN cap wise, teams will be screwed, we will have TONS of cash and it will be that VERY STRONG FREE AGENT CLASS...with THIS year being draft draft draft....you must build the foundation first...we don't even have decent backups...we don't have half of a team yet....

we have the best coaching staff....a front office that has won multiple super bowls...and you believe they are sitting on their hands, content to lose with scrubs? PLEASE....this was an opportunity for them, but they had to be sold on a plan...

the fans that can't wait it out, wont be around for when they win big...it wont be this year though, so just get used to it...if you pay boldin and use 2 picks to do it, by the time they are competitive, hes 32 and reaching the REAL downside of his career...did you see tory holt last year?

And there are less holes. With short notice he brought in two wide outs (Chambers and Wade), got the chiefs the franchise quarterback they have never had. Got a leader with Vrabel. Attracted probably the best HC option at that point in Haley. Got rid of that bum LJ, that all the others were too scared to do. And by doing this probably unveiled the best "suprise back" in the NFL last year with Charles. And to top it off has already brought in the BEST OC and DC out there IMO. Also dont forget that even though they were old, he pieced together an O-line with the pieces that didn't get Cassel killed his first year. He will bring in either Vargas or Jones today, and don't forget that we have 3 draft picks in like the first 50 picks (OL, NT, DB). I like to think back of the days of Peyton Manning and Troy Aikmen. These guys won a handful of games their first few years, but have since went on to be competitive. Boulden went to a team that can win games now, an aging team with a small window, a team that he can get a ring with. No one seems to think that perhaps Boulden didnt even want to come here. In Pioli we trust!

I think we need to remember that Pioli came into a serious “train wreck” last year. He got here late in the year, didn’t have his staff in place, and didn’t have the opportunity to properly scout...

What Train Wreck. The players Allen and now mmoore6251 are relying on were already in place. He is now excuses are being made for the lack of 20 holes in 1 year. This is year 2, there should be less holes.

A stop gate at OLB is putting a piece of bubblegum on a leak at a dam site.

Nice Excuse. Read that on all the sites now. No 1 wants to step forward to go out on the limb.

Patrick,

I am 100% behind you. I think we need to remember that Pioli came into a serious "train wreck" last year. He got here late in the year, didn't have his staff in place, and didn't have the opportunity to properly scout. I think we all need to take a few steps back. This team is not going to win a super bowl this year, and will probably not even make the playoffs. So why waste the big bucks in quick fixes. These FA's are wanting way to much money, and are only stop gaps. It seems everyone wants Pioli's head with what ever moves he makes. We won more games last year and overall I think his first year was a success given his circumstances. We missed out on Boulden....big deal. Signing Chambers is more important, and concentrating on a WR in the second round of the draft. I would use our pick from the falcons here and def. get a nose tackle. That position alone I think put our d-line as VERY young, with years of potential in their future. Pioli is setting this thing up perfectly in my opinion. But it is going to take some time. Hard to fill 20 holes in one year, especially with a 'tight' owner. Take this to the bank....there is no way Pioli takes Berry if he is there at the 5 spot. NO WAY. Pioli builds the lines first as he should, and he is going to invest it in the O-line. A boring pick but one that will thrive in the next decade. Just look at Oher for the Ravens. So all you Berry lovers best get ready for a disappointment. Rock on Chiefs! Loved you through the good times and the bad times. Hard to be positive through these times, but this is what makes our fan base the best and most loyal in the NFL

Well Patrick, that was a broad statement heard plenty of times already. That leaves you about 5 feet from any limb.

So if you really want to go out on the limb and share with us how this team will really improve the WR please inlighten us.

Chambers is the type of WR teams are always looking to upgrade at his position. What WR should the Chiefs target in the draft.

The Chiefs did want Boldin. By all accounts they offered their 3rd round pick for the guy. The Ravens offered a 3rd and a 4th and the Chiefs weren't willing to beat that.

I don't blame them. They would have had to either give up a 3rd and a 4th or a 2nd.

Boldin is not worth either to KC. They have too many holes and can fill those holes with those picks.Boldin isn't the only receiver out there.

If they resign Chambers and draft a WR in the first 3 rounds I think they will be fine.

If they really wanted Bolen, they could of had him.the truth was probably that Haley didnt really want him, because bolen would stand up to him.Haleys hot temper will cost him his job before its all said and done.

To Pioli, PLRASE,PLEASE, draft Dez.

The fact that they went after Boldin and are trying to resign Chambers is proof that they are trying to improve the offense. I assure you that just because they missed out on Boldin that they won't abandon their desire to upgrade at WR.

Just my thoughts.

Backbone:

I never said having Jones will make the WR position more dynamic. It will make the offense more dynamic. It will give the Chiefs a big back for short yardage and goal line situations.

Jones has nothing to do with WR. The WR positions will be improved one way or another. So why not have Jobnes as well?

Um how does a RB make a below ave WR more dynamic? Yes we brought in the top 2 Coordinators in the league. But again, they are working with below average players.

So the lack of improvement at WR takes away the dynamic you are talking about and that my friend will not sit well with the fan base.

Backbone:

Jones will in no way harm the fan base. If he plays well all that will happen is the Chiefs will be more dynamic and less one dimensional on offense.

As for the offseason with no moves, the Chiefs have brought in Romeo Crennel, Charlie Weis. They have resigned Mike Vrabel and are working to resign Chris Chambers. They are bringing in bigger RB's to give the Chiefs a 1-2 punch in the backfield.

I promise you, they will make some moves. A little patience is required. FA just started.

Sorry Marty ball filled the seats at Arrowhead. But this fan base is past Marty ball. I do think the playoffs are what we the fans are asking for. Marty ball put us in the SB exactly zero times.

Right Pat, w/o a receiver it will be MartyBall. I don't think we give big money to a guy his age for the simple reason he gets hurt, then we lose as most likely he will be done. Sign him for reasonable money and I am all for it. It's a long way to training camp, and at or after the draft I expect we will see more deals made.

what is a bad thing, the fan base irate over the 2nd offseason of no activity.

To bring in a FA and have him outplay the current starter will not sit well with the FAN BASE. Already lacking in attendance, to show fans that FA can improve this team will drive them farther away.

NO upgrade at WR, the position that had drop after drop. Putting the QB on the hot seat, the hand picked QB by the GM. If his production does not improve, again another reason to dive away the fan base.

So Jones can hurt and not help a shacky fan base.

How could that be a bad thing? If Jones runs better than Charles next year KC's offense is going to be in good shape.

better watch out because Jones can outplay Charles

I agree he is the best left out their execpt Sprolles, and we all know that isnt going to happen.
