Chiefs Links: Colts dump starting guard Ryan Lilja

AUTHOR: Patrick Allen | IN: Chiefs | COMMENTS: 14 Comments |

28 year old G released by the defending AFC champions? I think the Chiefs may have to take a look here. From Pro Football Talk:

But Polian is the one that makes personnel decisions, and he spoke loud and clear by releasing starting guard Ryan Lilja Monday, according to Alex Marvez of Fox.

Lilja was due a $1.73 million bonus soon, but the move is still surprising. He started every game for the Colts last season and is only 28 years old.

Ultimately, the Colts need better run blockers and Polian decided Lilja was only going to get in the way with a hefty base salary. Polian trusts the team’s ability to develop players and he’s usually right.

Only 28 years old ,If he`s healthy there is no way he could be worse than Goff was…

  2. D.A.S. says:

This is what I was talking about in the Chambers cheap Chiefs thread. Let’s go after him.

  3. D.A.S. says:

The name Chambers was a type-o. I starting calling it the wrong one and changed it. I guess I missed a word.

  4. Lenny says:

Huge upgrade over Wade Smith and Andy Alleman, looks like neither of them are coming back anyway, makes this a no brainer. Get it done Pioli.

  5. Speedybrit says:

This is home for Ryan. He went to K-State and i’ve seen him around town a lot. I could def see him wanting to come back to K.C. I agree we NEED to get this deal done. Come on Pioli.

  6. Adam Schwartz says:

I think we need to get him in the door, and we need to offer Chi. a 4th rouner this year and a 5th next year and try to pry away TE Greg Olsen who they seem interested in dealing

  7. Ehud says:

To me, this practically seals the deal that the Colts will choose Maurkice Pouncey with their 1st round pick.

And yes, we should take a look at this guy.

  8. Ray Ward says:

Come on Pioli, nab this guy! He’s only 28, has played, and started on 2 Superbowl teams, and won’t break the bank. With his KC ties, it is a no brainer. Get him before we lose him! He will be a hot commodity, and we can focus more on our front seven, and safety on defense, in the draft, and maybe even nab a couple of FA’s. We can’t pass up good O-linemen, with experience, but not yet on Medicare!

  9. Ray Ward says:

By the way, I like the Greg Olson idea too. I still think Cottam has potential, but dammitt, we need to get Cassel as many weapons as possible!

  10. Adam says:

Lilja still could be a Chief if it wasn’t for the Peterson/Vermeil Regime in ‘04

I hope I wake up tomorrow morning and see a “Chiefs sign Thomas Jones & Ryan Lilja” headline!!!

  11. dubldug says:

Polian ia an astute judge of talent and if this guard cain’t run block why do you all want him? He’d help Jamaal run up big numbers??? I don’t see it as anything that would make a difference on our line. What, we gonna platoon on passing downs? I agree about Pouncey, too bad eh?

  12. T-Train61 says:

a little off topic but any word on Jones? Growing a little apprehensive as the day wears on….

  13. Adam says:

    @dubldug

What does Polian having an astute judge of talent have to do with his release???? Clearly Lilja HAS talent. He wouldn’t be in the league, certainly wouldn’t be starting for the Colts, and after missing all of 2008, definitely wouldn’t be slotted back in as a starter a year later.

Yes his strength is Pass blocking, but every lineman does one better than the other. So keeping Cassel off his ass isn’t a priority as well??? This doesn’t mean he can’t come in a contribute…..he’d be a starter at RG if he was signed.

  14. Jordan P. says:

    I like it.
