It sounds like RB Thomas Jones (left), who was released by the New York Jets on Friday is headed to visit the Chiefs on Monday. That’s what ESPN reported on Saturday.
There’s no mystery that the Chiefs are seeking help for Jamaal Charles in the K.C. running game. Whether Jones is the best fit for that remains to be seen, given the fact he’ll turn 32 in August and will be in his 11th NFL season. But the 5-10, 212-pound Jones is a workout freak (check out those biceps in the picture) and he has the hard-nosed attitude that the Chiefs prize these days.
In 10 NFL seasons, he’s run 2,280 times for 9,217 yards and 62 TDs. Jones had a career best season in 2009 with 1,402 rushing yards and 14 rushing TDs. That included a career high 331 carries.

Marty Schottenheimer will be officially announced this evening as the latest addition to the Chiefs Hall of Fame.
Schottenheimer’s honor was to be part of Saturday night’s 101 Banquet at the Westin Crown Center Hotel.
Over his 10 years as head coach of the Chiefs, the team had a 104-65-1 record. That’s second in victories only to Hank Stram’s and his 129 winning efforts over 15 seasons.
His career head coaching record of 205-139-1 ranks sixth all-time in the NFL behind only Don Shula, George Halas, Tom Landry, Curly Lambeau and Chuck Noll. The western Pennsylvania native was head coach of the Chiefs, Browns, Redskins and Chargers.
Schottenheimer will be honored at a game during the 2010 NFL season at Arrowhead Stadium.
Marty and his wife Pat, along with son Brian (offensive coordinator of the New York Jets) were in Kansas City for Saturday night’s announcement.

Wide receiver Terrance Copper, who played mostly on special teams for the Chiefs last year, lasted only one day on the free-agent market. He re-signed with the Chiefs today.
Copper caught four passes last season, including a 50-yarder in the season-ending win in Denver. He was second on the Chiefs in special-teams tackles.

The saying about March is “In like a lion, out like a lamb.”
That may be true for the weather in some places, but if we were instead talking about free agency in Kansas City, most fans would already be set to sue general manager Scott Pioli for false advertising.
“We’re going to try to improve our team and supplement our team with free agents this year, as we did last year. We’ll be involved with free-agency. Absolutely.”
That was Pioli, as reported by the Kansas City Star on February 25.
Kansas City Chiefs Free Agency Hype Falls Short-Bleacher Report
The New England Patriots among other teams were reportedly interested in signing defensive end Le Kevin Smith in free agency.
The Providence Journal reports the Patriots are not in the running and instead GM Scott Pioli and the Kansas City Chiefs are in pursuit. Smith, 27, is 6’3″, 308 pounds and has only played in a 3-4 defense in his career.
Le Kevin Smith was originally a 2006 sixth round pick by the Patriots (And Pioli). Last August Bill Belichick traded him to Josh McDaniels and the Denver Broncos.
The Broncos didn’t offer him a tender putting him out on the market.
