There’s a lot of attention placed on what happens at the Combine, tests like the 40-yard dash and bench press. There’s the very important medical information and the psychological testing. Also
important are the interviews teams conduct with individual players.
More comes out of the Combine than just those numbers, tests results and interview notes. It’s a convention for NFL scouts and personnel types. After a day at the stadium and then interviews in the hotels of downtown Indianapolis, league types head for the bars, saloons and restaurants sprinkled throughout a vibrant city center. They complain about their boss, they complain about the long hours, they tell stories from the road and they enjoy the camaraderie of high-stress jobs in a very visible business.

Denver’s Josh McDaniels (No. 11), Cleveland’s Eric Mangini (No. 7) and Kansas City’s Scott Pioli (No. 5) also select before Bill Belichick in the first round.
Might one of these Belichick disciples spoil what the Patriots coach has in mind for draft day? Pioli (No. 36) and Mangini (No. 38) also come into play before any of the second-round picks (Nos. 44, 48 and 53) in the hands of the Pats. Could Kansas City or Cleveland take a player Belichick covets here?
It’s certainly possible, especially with Dimitroff holding the cards just in front of Belichick in the first round. While Dimitroff wouldn’t tip his hand Saturday and say the side of the ball he’s leaning toward with that first-round pick, the Falcons are in need of a pass rusher. And yes, a sack specialist is at the top of the Patriots’ wish list.

Former Patriots linebacker Mike Vrabel raised some eyebrows when he said Friday that if he couldn’t return to the Chiefs, he’d be more than open to coming back to the Patriots.
Kansas City coach Todd Haley wouldn’t “get into that” discussion yesterday, other than to laud Vrabel.
“He’s a heck of a player, a heck of a positive influence for me as a first-year coach in multiple, different areas,” Haley said., “whether it was leading during practice, or in game situations, coming to me, pointing things out . . . (he’s) just a tremendous football player that really is fun to be around.”

The Pittsburgh Steelers plan to let safety Ryan Clark to test the free agent market, according to an NFL source.
That stance has come about as the team has been discussing a contract with Clark’s representative.
Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert has identified Clark as a core player the team wants to re-sign.
At this point, though, there’s nothing concrete to indicate that a deal is imminent as talks haven’t progressed quickly.
Talks haven’t been cut off, but Clark is expected to reach unrestricted free agent status.
The Steelers signed nose guard Casey Hampton to a three-year contract last week and designated kicker Jeff Reed as their franchise player.
