Scott Pioli, Todd Haley and the rest of the Kansas City Chiefs coaching staff and personnel people are hunkering down in Indianapolis this weekend to watch a few hundred of the best college football players in the nation run around in t-shirts and shorts. They’re going to try and decide which of these young men they’d like to draft and subsequently pay a few million dollars to in the next few months.

Kansas City Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli said today that the team has been working to re-sign wide receiver Chris Chambers, outside linebacker Mike Vrabel and safety Mike Brown, among other pending free agents.

The Chiefs completed deals with running back Kolby Smith and quarterback Matt Gutierrez earlier this week.

‘We’ve had conversations with most all of our players that are free agents, including some restricted free agents, too,’ Pioli said today at the NFL scouting combine. “We’ve had conversations with all of them. We’re trying to keep some guys in the fold. That’s a big part of free agency as well.

Wilson: Chiefs trying to hold onto their own-Pro Football Talk

The Kansas City Chiefs got it pretty easy, they don’t need to redo their front office, or find a new coaching staff. They just need to find some better players. That sounds a little crass but this is a team that has won just six games over the last two years, and ten over the last three. By ways of comparison that is just one more win in the last three years than the Detroit Lions who went winless in 2008. The challenge for the Chiefs is finding players that they can build around, and it sounds easy but is actually quite hard.

Chief’s fans and their front office staff want to believe that they have a QB Matt Cassel from which the offense can be built around. I am not as optimistic. I think at some point the Chiefs are going to have to draft a franchise QB. I am not saying that he is a total bust, but that he needs a lot of help and may not have the skill set to be a NFL starter.

Fix the franchise: Kansas City Chiefs edition-Inquisitr

There are scores of big, tall guys with soft hands who can’t block, and plenty of lumbering, rhinoceros-size blockers who simply can’t run or catch. And finding one with the right blend of the two strengths has become that much harder in recent years because fewer and fewer high school and college teams are using tight ends in their spread offenses.

“Everyone is looking for a guy who can block like an offensive tackle and catch the ball like Tony Gonzalez,” Kansas City Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli said. “They don’t really exist. Or if they do, I haven’t seen one yet. And it’s tough to evaluate because of the systems that [college] teams run. It’s always been one of the hardest positions to evaluate.”

“That’s something Todd and I talked about wanting to have more of,” said Pioli. “(LB coach) Gary Gibbs is great at it and he’s professional about it. Charlie disagrees with everyone. Romeo does too. That’s OK because we all know each other. We want different ideas. We want to hear no. There needs to be no; it helps for growth.

“A lot of people say they want that, but they don’t really want that. Todd and I really want it. And we need it. We all need to have pushback. None of us has all the answers.”

That comment alone may surprise some people, but Pioli made it plain several times during his comments that it wasn’t only the players that had to improve off a 4-12 season.

“When you go 4-12 nobody had a good season and everybody has to get better,” said Pioli. “I have to be better, Todd has to be better and our coaching staff has to be better. It’s not just the players.”

We really need to keep our defense off the field so offense is a must. Just think what all those dropped passes mean, no first downs,TD's or FG's. More opportunity for opposing teams in the return game and lots of extra plays for our porous defense.

Why not. We need another LT like a hole in the head IF Albert can play LT. Hopefully Pioli will do the smart thing not like last year's botch of a draft.

After listening to Pioli, i believe that Dez Bryant will be the #1 pick for the chiefs. I think Haley is adamant about getting help for the offense and the best bang for the buck is Dez. Most likely we will be unable to trade out at #5, and as much as we need o-lineman, we need playmakers who can catch the ball. For myself i have been advocating Haden firstly, then Bryant secondly. We absolutely must put pressure on the opposing defenses and that will happen if we put more big time playmakers on offense.
