Your Thoughts on Trading Up [Updated]

Draft Countdown has the trade value chart. Here are some thoughts if we stick by it:

  • Packaging our two 2nds together could get us all the way up to the 17th overall pick.
  • Packaging our “2a” pick with our 4th round pick gets us into the bottom of the first round.
  • Packaging all three of our fifth round picks gets us towards the bottom of the third round.

Might there be anybody you think is worth trading up for?

UPDATE: Since this discussion has careened single-mindedly into nose tackles, here is AA’s exclusive sizing-up of the NT prospects.

Steve:

Wow, we have so many holes on this team. I am not sure we can justify spending two high pick on NT's. I grant you that a good team needs two good ones, but still. Wow. I can say this. Regardless of where we draft a NT this year, I am planning on having a 2011 need for a NT. The only question is, how high. We need one very good NT and a good NT, minimum. That position gets beat down and two good ones is not a luxury, but a good plan.

We might be able to double down on the available 3-4 NTs in this draft both 1 and 2a would net us the depth and either could start and the other could backup. NT is the 3-4 so I read and we could fix it due to our High picks. Go for it Chiefs

I would not trade up.

As much as I like the current regime they did not pick any impact players (other than a kicker in the draft last year)in last years draft as far as you can tell after one year.

My take on the Chiefs is they have too many holes to fill to give up draft picks.

Chiefs need at a minimum 1-2 safeties, 2-3 linebackers and one with pass rush skills, a 3-4 nose tackle, # 1 wide receiver, a center and right guard (or draft a left tackle and move Brandon Albert to guard.

This draft is suppose to be heavy on good defensive players in the 4-5 rounds so I wouldn't give up picks to move up when they have no ttrack record of picking impact players in the draft. .

Pioli's record of making trades is well known. This year with very few elite players and several very good players we are in better shape than last year to trade out. With ties to Miami, who needs a receiver-Dez B-a trade down is very possible. NE has an aging and increasingly fragile QB, which last year they learned that their backups were subpar when Brady was out, could they trade up? Several scenarios abound and we know absolutely that Pioli will go after targeted players and trrading up is one option. merlin, i am for whatever works to upgrade this team and if i have to put Cody in lipo so be it. I'd like to lose Bowe out of KC.

By the way, I take full responsibility for my earlier comment being the on-ramp to the NT Expressway.

Merlin:

Honestly, I wouldn't trade up at all in the first 2 rounds.

I'm willing to trade up for Thomas or Troup. Not a whole lot but I'm ok giving up a 4th or 5th rounder to tweak our 3 up to get Thomas. Troup should be there in round 3 and maybe even round 4.

My thought process is that while NTs are at a premium, so are the Chiefs picks. Because we have such a dearth of talent on our team I think our 1st and 2nd round picks are too valuable to give up for 1 player. In later rounds it is cheaper to move around.

dubldug:

Whatever it takes. Just as long as he doesn't as DBowe how to lose weight.

Anybody ever hear about liposuction? If we draft Cody he'd be losing 40 pounds quickly, then put on a NFL training regimen.

Ian:

I hear you. Should we go McClain at #5, Miami might very well take Dan Williams.

I was always a little hesitant to pick Rolando McClain at 5 but as I start to analyze mock drafts There is no way that McClain gets past the dolphins if not the Broncos. I once was on the bandwagon of drafting best OT but McClain or Berry should be the pick. to the fact of trading up: I could really see Dan Williams or Brian Price of UCLA being available anywhere from 17 to late first round. IF we could package a really good deal I would love t o be able to get back into the 20's in the first round and take who ever is there between the two

The fears about Cody are just plain ridiculous. He was fat all through college, played very well and then gained someweight afterwards. Duh, he is a big man and they tend to do that.

And isn't that what we need? a big fat (strong ) guy.

Vince Wilfork is big and fat, so was ted washington, shaun rogers etc.

I would love to have Cody!!!

I wouldn't trade up, I'd trade for players. It's worth dishing out a couple of picks for an established NT. And I still want Boldin as a Chief. I wouldn't go insane and trade away the future but losing one of two 2nd rounders and a later pick for a good player who can help now would be a good idea in my opinion. I might even consider trading down and getting a LT in the middle of the 1st to add on another pick later or to help get another player. It all depends on who's available and what other teams would give up.

I am really curious to see what Cam Thomas does in the combine and how it compares to Cody. I have no problem with Cody's accomplishments, but fear bust when he gets paid due to his weight. If they trade down from the #5 and still grab McClain, then trade back up to grab Iuputi, Pouncey, E Thomas, or D Williams...but then fall back on the additional picks from the trade down, this makes a lot of sense to grab as much of this defensive rich draft as possible while still loading up the OL.

Ehud:

I agree with your unspoken idea that NT's may fly up the board. Who are you seeing us target, where and what do you see us giving up to get him?

Casey Hampton re-signed with the Steelers.
3-4 teams are scrambling to re-sign their NTs.
More teams are becoming 3-4 teams.

All this says that NTs are at a premium. Unfortunately, we need one. If we trade up, it will be for a NT.

If we couldn't get McClain, Brandon Spikes could be worth trading up for late in the first.

the center Pouncey may be the guy as his stock is rising.

Trading up from early round two to late round one is very, very possible. Pioli has to love a certain player to give up the additional picks. It's tough to call for it, since we have so many needs. However, it is very possible that it will happen.

I would say, if it looks like someone is going to take Cody and the Chiefs really want him and think he can be the guy at NT, then he would be worth trading up for.

I personally am not sold 100% on Cody but our D will never be right until we get a bloody NT.

If the Rams take Bradford and Berry falls to us, I would totally trade back in if McClain was still available at 17.

My dream scenario would be to get Berry at 5, trade back into the first round somehow, with the 2nd pick in the 2nd round and either a player or a later pick or a future pick to get McClain and then to have Cody fall to us in the early 2nd.

Cody, Berry and McClain? I just peed myself.
