The Morning Fix

His name is Shahid Khan (right), he’s from Urbana, Illinois and he’s got enough money to buy controlling interest in the Rams all by himself. More on Khan and his purchase later in this post.

The Rams situation is another reminder of how lucky Kansas City was to have Lamar Hunt as the man who founded and controlled the franchise for 47 years. Hunt saw what happened when the Robbie family lost the Miami Dolphins when patriarch Joe Robbie passed away without a solid succession plan in place.

Rams May Have New Owner … Weekend Cup O’

“We love Kansas City,” Pioli said. “My wife is originally from Wichita, so we have family here. Her mother was born and raised in Wichita so her mother’s whole side of the family is here. Her father attended Wichita State, so she’s got several cousins that live in Wichita, Lawrence, and actually here in Kansas City.

“Oddly enough, one of my closest and dearest friends from growing up back in New York has been here for 13 years,” Pioli continued. “So this transition, when we made it, I knew was going to be relatively, I don’t want to say easy, but it was going to be easier knowing we had some things and some people in place that were going to help us learn a little bit about the city. I think our six-year-old has really taken to the city because there is a lot to do.”

The most obvious ways are by upgrading the offensive line and adding a true No. 1 receiver. New GM Scott Pioli was in a tough spot in his first season because there was so much work to do on a team that won a total of six games the previous two seasons. But if you’re going to give a quarterback $35.5 million in virtual guarantees, you’ve got to give him the pieces to be successful. The Chiefs led the league in dropped passes, and their best young receiver, 2007 first-round pick Dwayne Bowe, was No. 1 among wideouts with 11 drops, according to STATS LLC.

*And another thing: The Chiefs ranked 31st among 32 teams in sacks last season and need to find an outside linebacker who can pressure passers. They used the third pick in last year’s draft on Tyson Jackson, but ends in a 3-4 scheme are primarily anchors and space-eaters. Kansas City needs a game-changer.

Offseason burning questions:

The most obvious example would be Kansas City, who were forced to withdraw their bid to host the Super Bowl in 2015 because Arrowhead does not have a roof, and Jackson County narrowly denied the Chiefs funding to build one in time. The temperature in Missouri at this time of year is not particularly helpful to the cause, but should that prohibit a team from hosting the game? In my view, no.
