Teams Can Use Franchise Tag Starting Today

Just so you are aware, teams can now use their franchise tags. I don’t really expect the Chiefs to use their tag, as none of their free agents warrant that kind of money.

The fact that teams can now use their tags signals the approaching free agency period. While the Chiefs may not franchise any of their players, they will be keeping a close eye on what other teams do.

One name many Chiefs fans will be watching is New England Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork. Wilfork is incredibly valuable to the Patriots and he still does not have a long term deal. The closer free agency gets without some of these high value players getting contracts, the greater the chance that they will be tagged.

If the Patriots do tag Wilfork, there is still a chance the Chiefs could pick him up. You may remember last year the Patriots tagged Matt Cassel and then traded him to the Chiefs for KC’s 2nd round draft pick. The Chiefs then took over Cassel’s contract which they restructured, signing the QB to a long term deal.

If Wilfork is franchised, his contract will cost $7.003 million for the 2010 season.

What do you think, Addicts? Should the Chiefs pursue Wilfork even if he is franchised? What do you think it would cost them?
