The Morning Fix

Down 10-6 at the end of the first half, Payton walked to the New Orleans Saints locker room and knew something had to give if his team was going to have a chance to win Super Bowl XLIV. All week, Payton and his coaching staff had talked about being aggressive, no matter what the scoreboard read or the game situation.

Before he even entered the locker room, Payton had made up his mind that on the opening kickoff of the second half, he was going to go against the odds and run an onside kick. It was a decision that would make him a genius or an idiot; there would be no place to land between those options.

A Look Back at No. 44 … Tuesday Cup O’Chiefs

Last week, it seemed that Todd Haley’s coaching staff was set.

Not so fast.

On Monday, the Houston Texans announced that Cedric Smith, the Chiefs strength and conditioning coach for the last three years, has joined the staff of head coach Gary Kubiak.

“I’m extremely excited to be here,” Smith said from his team office. “Knowing Gary Kubiak from being in Denver, I look at it as a great opportunity to be part of something special here, with a team up-and-coming and on the cusp of winning a championship.”

For the fifth time in franchise history, a Kansas City Chiefs player has won the NFL Man of the Year award. The league honored Brian Waters at the Super Bowl for his contributions to the community.

It may be as simple as hosting a pizza party, giving away Chiefs tickets or providing a personal tour of Arrowhead Stadium. By giving his time and attention, Waters is helping change lives.

It was a day Audra Harrison and her family will never forget. Her nine-year-old son, Brock, is a huge Chiefs fan. But because Brock is autistic, Audra said the family never considered seeing a game in person because of all of the planning it would require.

That was until Brian Waters’ 54 Foundation and the Fox 4 Love Fund made it all happen.

“He was great. He was able to sit in the stadium and he was actually watching the field and watching the game,” Audra said. “Then at a later time, we even got invited back to a one-on-one. We even got to go down on the field, in the tunnel and locker room. That was just really, really neat for Brock.”

According to Bodog.com, the Kansas City Chiefs are 100/1 longshots to make the Super Bowl.

Topping the list is the Colts, who hold 13/2 odds. They’re followed by fellow AFC West team the Chargers at 8/1.

The team that just proved they could win it all last night? 10/1. Ouch, Saints.

after applauding the saints coach for a very risky call, i had to consider our coach and his many risky calls, or were they. arguably, coach haley made many a blunder in his first season. however, it will be interesting for opposing coaches in this upcoming season to prepare for haley, who after all had little to lose when going on fourth down and onside kicks. i expect haley learned a good deal about being a head coach and the rest of the league will be a little uncertain in preparing for the chiefs this next season on fourth downs and in the kickinge.

      Very good point Dubldug.

Haley surely made some mistakes in his first season but I think a lot of his aggressive calls were due to the teams terrible offensive performance, especially early in games. After a certain point, the Chiefs weren’t going to the playoffs and everyone knew it. Haley was going for wins. It wasn’t always the right call but I think he was just going for broke a lot of times.

If he is just as aggressive when the Chiefs have a better team and have a better chance of coming back on a team, then he is just being reckless. But going for broke against teams that are obviously superior to yours can sometimes help even the playing field a bit.

I just saw that Peppers won’t be signing long term w/ the Panthers. Anyone else think we should go after him even if we have to overpay? I think he still has plenty in the tank and would be a beast as an OLB if we could pick him up. It makes me shiver to think that we could get McClain and Peppers in the same LB core.

I totally think we should go after Peppers. Let Vrabel go and you have Peppers and Hali at OLB. That would change the entire D.
