The Morning Fix

Here’s a quick explanation of how it works. The Board of Selectors is made up of members of the media; one for each franchise city in the NFL, including two for New York. There is a representative from the Pro Football Writers of America and then there are 11 at-large voters. Among that group are 30 newspaper writers, 10 writers for sites on the Internet, two magazine writers and two television reporters. There are 42 men and two women.

This group elects each year a class of between four and seven new members. After mail-in preliminary votes, a group of 15 finalists is reached. There are two others put up for nomination by the Board’s Seniors Committee, made up of the more veteran members of the committee.

Another Hall of Fame Saturday … Cup O’Super Bowl

G Brian Waters is one of three finalists for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. The winner will be announced live on the field by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell moments before the start of Super Bowl XLIV.

The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award is the only league award that recognizes a player’s off-the-field community service as well as his playing excellence.

That’s before the coin toss, but after the final whistle the Chiefs will once again take the field when our very own Len Dawson carries out the Lombardi Trophy to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell at mid-field. Dawson will continue the tradition of Super Bowl legends participating in the Lombardi Trophy ceremony, which began with Bart Starr’s participation in Super Bowl XL.

The fastest and most colorful run down the football field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City this season cannot be claimed by any NFL gridiron star. Instead, that honor goes exclusively to the flashy horse-and-rider team of Chiefs Warpaint and Kansas City Chiefs cheerleader Susie Derouchey.

To the thundering applause of about 70,000 Kansas City fans at each home game, Derouchey and “Warpaint” sprinted down the middle of Arrowhead Stadium after every Chiefs touchdown and successful field goal kick. In all, more than 540,000 people at the stadium witnessed their celebratory rides for the 2009-2010 season.
