NFL Draft Blogosphere: Who the Chiefs Are Drafting

facebooktwitterreddit

Thanks to the handy databases at Hail Redskins and Walter Football, here are how the various mock drafts around the intertubez are having the Chiefs Draft over the past couple of days:

T Russell Okung, Oklahoma State: 17 mocks
S Eric Berry, Tennessee: 5 mocks
T Anthony Davis, Rutgers: 2 mocks
ILB: Rolando McClain, Alabama: 2 mocks
T Trent Williams, Oklahoma: 2 mocks
T Bruce Campbell, Maryland: 1 mock

Now, for a guy like myself who’s done nothing but rail against going OL with our #5 overall since getting here, this list of mocks is like a stab in the eye. I’ll spare you the ranting and raving about why I’d rather have any number of playmakers over a tackle, but there is one interesting note to make after skimming all these mocks:

Virtually all the mocks that have the Chiefs going with a tackle have Eric Berry off the board by the time our pick is up.

My question is, why does the Draft blogosphere believe Eric Berry the only skill position player worth our #5 overall before immediately surrendering to the idea that we have to draft tackle?

There are a handful of players I’d rather have than a tackle. I believe S Taylor Mays (who I’ve defended extensively here) or CB Joe Haden would be good value. I’d rather reach for ILB Rolando McClain (a Chiefs fan favorite it seems) or, and this is how desperate I am for skill players, I’d consider WR Dez Bryant. And I think QB Jimmy Clausen is destined to be special in the NFL, and while it’d be crazy to pick up a QB with $60+ million committed to Cassel, he’s perfect insurance for Cassel and has great trade value if Cassel pans out (not to mention Weis was his old coach). Great value at #5 overall.

If the Chiefs cannot draft Eric Berry, there is one player above them all that I believe would have a similar impact on this team. He is a special talent that we’ve discussed a couple times here at AA, and he would be great value at #5 overall. And nobody in the Chiefs blogosphere or the Draft blogosphere seems to consider him for us.

I’m pulling back the curtain later today, so bookmark us if you haven’t already.

But in the meantime, let me ask the Addicts: if Berry is gone, list the remaining players you’d consider at #5, in order of preference if you can…
