Chiefs Swipe Safety From Eagles Practice Squad

The Chiefs made a move to help fill their gaping hole at Safety and signed Reshard Langford from the Eagles practice squad. Langford was a 4 year starter at Vanderbilt.

Via Josh Looney over at KC Chiefs.com:

“(Practice squad) guys are free agents, essentially,” Haley said today. “There is probably a lot more pilfering that goes on that doesn’t show up because guys choose to stay put. This is a guy we’ve done a lot of research on and feel like it’s a guy who has a great opportunity with us.”

In a situation such as this, the player has the option to turn down the offer and stay with his current team. Obviously, Reshard thought he would have a better chance of getting on the field with the Chiefs. Welcome to the Red and Gold Reshard!

I am definitely glad we were able to convince him to sign, we needed some depth at safety and a young guy to maybe get a shot he couldnt get elsewhere. There are a lot of positives in there that are intangibles that cannot be taught.

Scouting report via NFLDraftScout.com

"Langford is a prototypical strong safety with a strong build and a linebacker mentality. He had 247 tackles, 16.5 for loss and eight interceptions as a four-year starter for the Commodores, a school known for its defense in recent years. Teammate CB D.J. Moore gets a lot of well-deserved recognition. Langford's leadership on and off the field was another big reason for Vandy's successful 2008 campaign.
Positives: Well-built athlete with good upper- and lower-body strength. … Breaks down in space and wraps up to secure as a tackler. … Quick to attack the line of scrimmage in run support, and initiates contact with tight ends in pass coverage. … Takes on blockers in the open field. … Explosive as a hitter and can be an intimidator. … Quick feet in his pedal, can transition forward to close on the out route. … Good hands for the interception whether on tipped balls or closing on a ball in coverage. … Swarms to the ball on most every play, even if the action goes away from him. … Vocal leader, team captain. … Intelligent player. … Good special teamer who works hard to get downfield to block on return teams or drop the hammer in kick coverage.

Negatives: Average height for an in-the-box safety. … Hits with his shoulder, instead of wrapping up, in the secondary and when coming downhill on running backs. … Despite his build he can be tossed aside or pushed backward by blocking tight ends on the line or at the second level. … Man cover skills are questionable. … Lacks the great vertical leap to high-point the ball. … Gets sucked in by underneath routes, leaving his cornerback vulnerable deep. … Lacks elite quickness, but has enough speed to survive. "

Not a bad breakdown at all. He is someone to keep an eye on these last two weeks and next year.
