Merlin's Magic: Midseason Review

We are officially at the half-way point of the Chiefs’ season. The last quarter did see us pull off a much needed win. The win against an imploding Redskins team was ugly, but we’ll take any win at this point. The Dallas game was a highlight, but the blowout loss to Jacksonville was a lowlight. Yes, the Jacksonville game was a blowout, I don’t care what the final score was. We got debacled by a below average team. Two quick touchdowns late against a defense playing soft doesn’t change that.

What have we learned about the Chiefs so far? Well, the positives include Tyson Jackson growing as a player, Jovan Belcher looking to be a steal as an undrafted rookie, solid corner play and an offensive line that sucks just a bit less than before and LJ exploded and is now looking for work. The offensive line comment is certainly a relative statement. Negatives? Well, that’s like shooting fish in a barrel. The offensive line can’t create consistent holes for running, our safety play has been poor, something most of us didn’t expect. We can’t get into a rhythm on offense and the defense keeps getting burned by big plays. You know you suck on defense when you hear this comment about an opposing player: “He had a season high game today, against the Chiefs”. That and watching highlights of other players burning our defense is enough to make me sick.

At the mid-point of the season, I expected us to have two wins. Well, if you took the under, you won. How does the next quarter look? Well, we start off with our most winnable game, a trip to the Black Hole to play Undead Al, Fatmarcus and Cable the woman beater. One of the best things I can say about Todd Haley (and I am running low on good things to say about him) is that his teams haven’t quit on him. This is an important game and close to a must win. Tough coaching without positive results has a short shelf life. After that game, it gets much harder. We host the Steelers then travel to play a Charger team that seems to have developed a pattern of coming on late in the season. It would be a major upset to win either one of those games. Then, we host the Broncos. That could turn out to be an interesting game. I don’t buy the Broncos as a good team and I think they are reverting to form. However, they are better than we are. If we are going to see a big upset, this would be the most likely game.

Since we are in the second half of another lost season, we can start looking at draft position. Right now, we would draft second overall in front of everyone but the Rams. Missouri might be the “Show Me’ state, but all it can show the NFL is how to suck better than any other state. There is great, there is good, there is bad, there is pathetic….. and then there is NFL teams in Missouri.

For draft position, it would be good to escape the trap of a top five pick and the huge dollars attached to it. If we assume a slightly optimistic prediction of four wins, that should be enough to land in that 6-12 range of picks. It all starts with a win against the Raiders.

For the upcoming quarter, one win is expected, two is over expectations. That’s my take on it, how do you see the Chiefs at the mid-point?

If we can’t beat the Raiders this Sunday, then we have officially become the Raiders.

    DD:

Does that mean Pioli has to wear a white leather jacket and his Super Bowl rings?

  3. I am running low on good things to say about Haley too. I hope he turns it around.

We have to start winning and get out of the top five picks. Absolutely have to. We do not want to be saddled by another huge contract. We need flexibility in the draft, and no one wants to trade into the top five anymore.

I am willing to be patient with Tyson Jackson, but he is not looking so strong, although some life is begining to appear in him.

I am with DD. If we get swept by the Raiders (A real bad Raiders team), then we have hit a new low.

  4. Merlin says:

Jeremy, we have already hit a new low and I suffered through the 70’s and 80’s.

I think that out DC is a negative. I know that our defense is a little better than last year but we give up way too many big plays and receivers run wide open way too many times. Are the big plays that we give up on the players or is the DC not putting the players in the right position to make the plays?

I actually expect the Raiders will beat the Chiefs Sunday. The Chiefs have been beaten more times then I can care to recall on the deep pass. It seems the Chiefs just can’t defend it. I can see Russell throwing a deep pass and the Chiefs about 5 yards away from the catch and the guy walks into the endzone. I hate the Raiders but see them pulling this one out in Oakland.

The Raiders are the scumbags the Chiefs are the goodguys.

I see a team that came in with high hopes, that hasn’t performed even close to what was hoped for. What suprises me is what you stated: The team is not giving up! I am starting to feel the negative effects of all the DOH (Disapporoval Of Haley)around here and agree there is very little positive to say about Haley. One thing does suprise me though, the team is not giving up on him or us. Last year at midseason it sure seemed as if the games were over before they even started. Maybe I am being overly optomistic here, but it seems much better this year. I think our DC needs to hit the road jack! He sucks and there is nothing left to say. Mike Brown hopefully joins him! I think Dorsey and Jackson could be a great team someday especially if we aquire a great NT. I agree we definately do not want a top 5 draft pick. If the league was willing to trade up and cough up a decent 2nd or 3rd round pick, then great, but we know that won’t happen. Overall I am more than disappointed at how this season has went. Not only do we all have to wait another damn year to POSSIBLY see a decent Chiefs team, but we still have to make through the rest of this shitty year!!!!!!

Well said Shane.Smith. That is exactly how I feel. Very well said. The offseasons are very long, and they are even longer when we the team stinks, further we will probably not be so great next year either. We need help on the strength of schedule.

  10. shane.smith says:

Please God, bless Jeremy’s wish!! Let us have a relative easy schedule next year! Please????? I would love us to bat 500 next year so I may see my beloved Chiefs on MNF!!!

Let me be clear on my position concerning the Raider. I HATE THE RAIDERS !!!!!!!!!! If they go 0 for 16 it is not enough for me. My favorite raider picture is the look on Al Davis face after a loss. The Chief’s need this game. If they lose it will be devastating. I agree with you all, the team is not giving up. Let us hope that Haley has a quick learning curve. I also believe he needs an oc and dc. Why he let Chan go is mystifying. He has never been a head coach. Yet he wants to add oc to the head coaching duties. Foolish move.

All. a team that’s NOT GIVING UP shows that there’s a pulse in there, somewhere. Or is it just fear of losing a job by the players?????? Who knows. One can coach their eyeballs out with x’s and o’s, but its harder I think to coach a bad team and not have them give up on a play, a game, or a season. To give up is the worst possible scenario any team could endure. There’s a new character that’s trying to be born here – I just hope the brass at the stadium see that and don’t decide to tear major parts of it out again. This team needs time to jell, sort out the bad apples and get rid of them, and bring in some good talent. Patience is key….If you keep ripping things apart like the Rayyyyyyyyduh’s do every year, it won’t work. Its starts at the top and filters all the way down to through the entire, and I mean, ENTIRE, team. Patience my friends…Patience!!!!!!
