Chiefs Cut Larry Johnson Today

Posted by: Randy5k-Arrowhead Adventurer

Per the home office, the Chiefs cut Larry Johnson today. It all works out to a cost of a $2.14 million dollar paycheck to Larry in exchange for the right to keep him from stinking up Arrowhead any further. I live 200 miles away but I think it smells better already.

Lots of questions emerge in my Arrowhead addicted mind.

1. Did LJ’s absence Sunday cost us the game?

2. Barring injury to a star RB, will any teams be interested in Mr. Diapers?

3. Is cutting Larry the right thing to do?

  1. 1. CHIEFS FAN IN CT Says:

It’s the right thing to do. He’s a cancer. Unfortunately as the weeks roll by I get less and less of a feeling that the leadership is taking this team down a determined path. I certainly hope I am wrong.

  2. 2. CHIEFS FAN IN CT Says:

As an added note, I will not be surprised to see a team pick him up soon, and (disturbingly) I would not be surprised to see him put up some decent numbers.

    1. Did LJ’s absence Sunday cost us the game?

    —NO

    2. Barring injury to a star RB, will any teams be interested in Mr. Diapers?

—-Somone will pick him up, he will be a backup, throw a fit because he’s a backup, be a cancer for another team, then be let go again. I’ll say the Bronco’s or the Bears.

    3. Is cutting Larry the right thing to do?

—-YES, overpaid, underproducing disruption is all he is.

  4. 4. shane.smith Says:

No, LJ’s absence did no harm. We lost that game on more levels than just the running game, I should know because I witnessed the poor performance live. Who cares where he goes, just as long as he is gone. Cutting LJ is the best thing this regime has done in a while. They listened to the fans and showed some balls in doing so. Just wanted to add that I took my son to his first NFL/Chiefs game yesterday and we actually stayed in a hotel across the street from where the Chiefs were staying. Actually got to meet Hunt, Dbowe,Vrabel, Haley, Pioli, DJ, Jamal, and many others. To say the least, my son was more than stoked! What a bonus to watching his first Chiefs game ever. Just frustrating to have a bunch of JAG fans tell us how shitty our team is! And they were right! Oh well, still love the CHIEFS!!!

  5. 5. Double D Says:

    1. No. He hasn’t done a damn thing all season. Yesterday, Kolby Smith seemed to run with purpose and attitude – something’s that been totally lacking from LJ’s effort for quite some time.
    2. Yes, Broncos or Texans would be my first guess.
    3. Yes. He brings nothing positive to the Chiefs.

  6. 6. Randy5k Says:

Shane I had tickets to the game, my girlfriend and I looked at flights, but couldnt make the move to buy the tickets and closed the window. Just lost steam. I resold the tickets on Stub Hub. Sure sounds like you guys had a great time despite the performance, but your mention of the Jags fans comments makes me glad I didnt go. I’ve written this season off. Chiefs Fan I get the feeling the ownership and management wrote this year off way before I did.

  7. 7. 81cjones Says:

I think $2.14 million is a small price to pay to get rid team cancer. I thought he was great in his small RB reign these last few years, but it’s obvious that it is time to move on.

    1. No! LJ’s presence would NOT have impacted this team enough to get them a win this week.

    2. I think that multiple teams needing his assistance. IE – Redskins, Colts, Bills, Seahawks, etc.

    3. I believe the cutting of LJ was the best thing for the Chiefs to do right now. The coaching staff can translate this as a great fresh new start to the players. The big drama is gone and now they can really focus on what they need to do. If LJ stuck around, it would allow him to start influencing other teammates. Similar to TO’s stunt in Dallas!!!

  8. 8. sthall20 Says:

I have a feeling that we now have three decent running backs, meaning no one will get tired. We were out of that game too early to see that happen. I think looking forward we will be okay. There are some decent running backs coming out this year plus some good recievers that might be avalible late (the guy from oregon and des bryant come to mind). I know we just got rid of a trouble player but I think the duck might have learned his lesson

  9. 9. Randy5k Says:

Jones I wonder if we would have done worse with LJ.

  10. 10. shane.smith Says:

LOL Randy, probably so! By the way, the JAGS fans were decent about dogging our Chiefs. It just sucked that a shitty teams fans actually could dog us out, and not being able to comeback with anything. Nothing, Zilch! They were saying it must suck that our best players is our kicker/punter. What is sad is they are absolutely right! Please GOD, bring us relief next year!! I beg you!

  11. 11. 81cjones Says:

    Randy5k,

I really think that we could have been better off from the Haley’s arrival. The team would have come together alot more. hopefully Haley can use this time effectively and get his guys to come together as a team. We shall see!!! I have been on a football team where there is one guy that is not happy and he brought others down with him. I think this will be really good for the team!

  12. 12. Whir Says:

We didn’t lose the game with LJ’s absence. We lost the game because our Defense is even worse than our offense. Oh, and it doesn’t matter who our RB is, our O-line can’t create a hole wide enough to slip a piece of paper through.

  13. 13. vbchief Says:

Thank god cry baby is gone!! Our r.b’s did no worse than l.j. On a quick thought, why did we wait till the last few moments to finally use our $60 million dollar Q.B? Haley finally took his head out of his ass and opened up the offense and look what happened. maybe we can see more of this the rest of the season!!

  14. 14. Vrod74-MikeSD Says:

Whir!! You are absolutely wrong. Our Defense kept us in the game! We would not have been as close as we were if our Defense had played nearly as shitty as our Offensive Offense! The only bad part I saw was not being able to get off the field faster, i.e. stopping Jones-Drew. Other than that, the tackling looked pretty decent. I was thinking they might pull it out in the end. My question to Haley is WHY NOT MAKE THOSE PLAY SELECTIONS THE WHOLE DAMN GAME AND NOT AT THE END!!!! I saw 15 plays that my 7 year old niece would have seen coming, so why did Haley go with them. I really hated seeing his play selection at times in this game.

  15. 15. toma Says:

Whirl…..The defensive line played well, they gave Jags QB good pressure. The problem was the DB’s played as if they were still in high school. The Offensive line didn’t give Cassel allot of time but I also seen Cassel miss on a few of his passes. Maybe Cassel should try practicing his passes with someone in his face.

  16. 16. Double D Says:

Meanwhile, Bernard Pollard is being credited for turning the Texans’ defense around . . .

  17. 17. Randy5k Says:

DD the Chiefs wont settle for anything less that the best, thats why Pollard, Jared Allen, Tony G. were shipped off!!!

  18. 18. Randy5k Says:

You cant argue with the results from those trades can you? Can you DD? IM WIGGING OH GOD!!

  19. 19. Gump Says:

    Toma, Whirl

Yes the D-line did play well, And the D-backs weren’t really bad except for Brown. I have been waiting to make a judgement on him because of all of the emotion over Pollard. Well the Jury is in, he has to go !!! every big play on Sunday went right at Brown. Others handled their part and yes the Jags gained yards, but all of the big plays involved Brown being way out of position, blowing an assignment, or failing to tackle. Not even the excuse of being sent on a Blitz like the last couple of games. he is just apparently confused. Time to convert one of our corners to safety or something. Looking forward to the draft Berry or Mays will fix this immediately.

All that said I think Clancy P. has to go too, this is getting ridiculous.

  20. 20. shane.smith Says:

Clancy needs to go as well! I find it frustrating as hell each week to see a teams #1 reciever wide open multiple times during a game. WTF???? Sims-Walker has been there best guy all year and yet we leave him so he may boost his stats. Same damn thing every time we play against a team with a decent tight end. We always seam to leave plenty of room right in the middle of the field for the opposing TE to make a nice easy catch with at least 10-20 yards of running room after the catch. Sorry, but 3-4 or not, Clancy game planning SUCKS!!!!

  21. 21. Quazzimotto Says:

Great day for Chief’s nation, finally a bright spot. Sad it took until the middle of the season.

    shane.smith,

Agree 100% with you, Pendersnap sucked in AZ and he still sucks today. He’s miles ahead of Gary Gibbs (who we also have, crazy), but he’s god awful and needs to get the boot.

How about Lance Long? He looked like Welker a little yesterday, kinda excited to see him play some more.

  22. 22. sgt_ducttape Says:

I would be interested to know what the Chiefs front office thought about the online petition, if that had any bearing on their release. Nearly 37,000 signatures is about half a stadium. Hearing that LJ’s agent was going to be looking at the NFLPA for help if LJ didn’t start was probably a strong arm tactic from a weak position, but thats a moot point if they just say, “see ya!”.

With Portis injured the Redskins might give him a look, Dan Snyder is an idiot anyway, so why not? But I don’t see Kubiak sniffing around for LJ. LJ is no Pollard.

I listened to the game on the Fox and heard them call Vrabel’s name several times chasing Garrard. He never caught him. Our DBs seem to always be out of position, taking bad angles, missing tackles, and generally getting run over.

How is it that Keith Brooking was available and we didn’t get him? With all these other waiver wire/released guys we found how is it he didn’t get a look? He had a real good game last night against the Eagles.

Chris Chambers couldn’t make it as a fourth reciever on the Chargers and within a couple of days comes in and makes the rest of our recieving crew look like walk ons for Valparasio. Are the “right 53″ on other teams just waiting to be cut and picked up by the Chiefs?

  23. 23. 102win Says:

We won’t miss LJ. We have to make some serious moves this off season. I still say we should sign LT McNeill, LB Morrison and WR Steve Breaston. We need to send our three fifths and a third next year to NE for their 2nd #60, then we draft:
    R1 # 4 S Eric Berry-Tennessee
    R2 # 36 LB Von Miller-Texas A&M
    R2 # 51 OT Sam Young-Notre Dame
    R2 # 60 C Kris O’Dowd-USC
    R3 # 68 SS Barry Church-Toledo
    R4 #100 TE Aaron Hernandez-Florida

  24. 24. Randy5k Says:

I listened to quite a bit of it on the radio. I heard many times “and blank is WIIIIIIIDE OPEN!!!”. Tired of hearing that.

  25. 25. shane.smith Says:

I said that same thing a couple weeks ago Quazzimotto, Lance Long could easily be the next Wes Welker. He practically got knocked out against the Chargers and wanted to finish the game but the Docs said no. He has great hands and decent speed. I like him so far!!

  26. 26. bbq Says:

    1. No. Terrible coaching cost us the game and the season. Jamaal Charles averaged 6 yards a carry but was only given the ball 6 times. What gives?

    2. I think it’s very likely. It would be a little surprising to see a a player like Larry, who has been hyper-productive in the past, not get picked up by SOMEONE. Then again, Shaun Alexander is still looking for work.

    3. Absolutely. LJ hasn’t been anything for defenses to be scared of for a couple years now, and he causes more problems for the team than he does good.

  27. 27. Quazzimotto Says:

Nice call on Long shane.smith, the guy looked great out there. Made a mistake not getting out of bounds but I like his upside.

    102,
I don’t know much about Von Miller, but I totally agree with the rest, especially O’Dowd! And you’re dead on about Berry, the guy is a beast! I like your FA’s too. Still like the Ryan Pickett idea, but what are the chances Pioli tries to go after Logan Mankins or Richard Seymore, you know where they’re from…

The FA’s along the front 7 this year are DEEP, we could go after some real talent, wouldn’t mind seeing a solid CB signed (Ellis Hobbs has my vote, expensive but again, you know where he’s from). McNeill should be a top priority tho if he doesn’t resign with SD.
