Kenny Smith? A Real Head Scratcher

AUTHOR: jeremyhanson | IN: Chiefs | COMMENTS: 17 Comments

Kenny Smith? Really? The same Kenny Smith who according to nfl.com has not played a meaningful snap since 2003. The same Kenny Smith who at last count weighed only 303 pounds? I thought 3-4 DTs needed to be heavier than that? I am perplexed. I hope he proves me wrong.

I figure DT Marlon Favorite would have been signed to the active roster and Kenny Smith to the practice squad since Marlon is younger, presumably in better shape, weighs 11 pounds more, and would cost much less than a veteran. What are your thoughts?

  1. BILLY says:

What about offense…And is there not any players out there that are not with the Pats or the Cards?

  2. shane.smith says:

This move makes no sense to me at all. Once again, if they are from the Patriots they are presumed magical in some way. I will love to see Smith be a super stud, but HIGHLY doub it and even if he is any good statistics prove he won’t be worth a shit for long cause he will be hanging out with DJ on the bench or better yet on IR.

  3. Quazzimotto says:

Billy you said it. Can we possibly trade or sign anyone that hasn’t been in the Pioli/Haley systems? How do other teams cast-offs make ours better? I must be missing the bigger picure.

This reaching for washed up lineman and cutting/benching our best players crap has worked out real well. At some point you’d think they’d catch on and knock it off. This is worse than bringing Seau back.

In 2010 there are an overwhelming amount of substantial players on both sides of the ball as free agents. We HAVE to make a splash in FA and hit some real homers in the draft if we expect to even be a .500 team, let alone a playoff contender.

  4. You said it. We have tons of cap room now, and probably even more next year, we have to bring in some high priced, but high talent players in here next year.

A little perspective: Kenny Smith’s last real game snap was in 2003 the same year that the IRAQ WAR BEGAN!!!

  5. kcdan58 says:

How does the uncapped year affect all of our cap space?

  6. 102win says:

    kcdan58,

I believe the uncapped year ahead has two impacts on the Chiefs. For one, the Chiefs should have spent more last year in FA-since this year we might have to overpay for the same talent. Secondly, I believe the uncapped year will make high 1st round picks more valuable. So this is what I would do–
Sign–LT Marcus McNeil,DT Ryan Pickett,WR Steve Breaston, and LB Kirk Morrison.

    R1 #5 FS Eric Berry-Tennessee
    R2 #37 OT Jason Fox-Miami
    R2 #57 C Kris O’Dowd-USC
    R3 #68 SS Darrell Stuckey-KU
    R4 #100 TE Aaron Hernandez-Florida
    R5 (3)-RB,LB,CB

Cut LJ,Throw the bank at McNeil.

  7. Quazzimotto says:

I agree with a lot of that 102. If we can pry McNeil away he should be our top priority. We could slide Albert to the right side and with O’Dowd we’d have a solid OL for years to come.

I like Berry, but I would prefere Taylor Mayes because he can do anything. He can play FS, SS, and LB, adding an insanely versitile weapon to our D with his size and speed. He’s the next coming of Polamalu(IMO). Instead of Stuckey how about throwing some bank at Dawan Landry?

We need a NT, and I would like to see them draft WR Kerry Mier from KU as well. With 3 restricted agent tags for each team and the massive amounts of money being thrown around, for us to get anyone with superior talent thru FA is going to be real tough.

Also the agents that do sign have to sign a 6 yr contract. I want McNeil, but I wonder if they don’t try to trade Dorsey for a 1st rounder and draft Okung and try to pick up either a RB (Jhavid Best), LB, or WR (Arrelious Benn).

I see them trying to trade Dorsey because there are a LOT of talented DE available. Its a sure bet that we’ll be getting some of New England’s starters, almost their whole front 7 are FAs next season. Along with Richard Seymore.

  8. Vrod74-MikeSD says:

    Quazz and 102,

Throw the bank at a LT. Why? We have Branden Albert or do you plan on releasing or moving Waters and putting Albert there? I know Waters used to play Center but can’t we get a better AND younger one through the draft next year? We are paying big time bucks to BA, so if you throw the bank at McNeil, you will be paying out the hind quarters for two OL. I know we need the help, but we need help on the RIGHT side of the line, not the left.

And don’t CUT LJ! Send him to another team that actually has a power running style like WASH, SEA, CHI, SF, TB….you get the point. We might be able to get a #4, 5 or 6 or any combination of the bottom four from any of those team for him.

  9. Quazzimotto says:

    VRod,

McNeill is a premier LT, is only 25, and Albert used to play Guard in college (and he was great there). Waters isn’t going to be around forever. Either way, whether we draft an OT or sign one thru FA, Albert will probably be moved from the LT spot to the right side. And we probably will draft a C. O’Dowd would be a great pick.

McNeill is proven, and he’s one of the best LT in the NFL. With him, a solid center, and another OT, we’d have the makings of one of the best OL’s for many years to come. That’s why I’d throw the bank at McNeill. I’d rather pay a boat-load for quality and be set for years than nickle and dime and have what we have now.

Also, by signing McNeill, we solidify our Oline, allowing us to use our 1st round pick to take one of the several outstanding, impact defensive players that will be available in the 2010 draft. I realize its a lot of money tied up in only a few players, but its money well spent in an area of severe need.

  10. cclary says:

I believe that if you have a great OL and DL that you can have a little less talent at the other positions. You give a QB enough time he will find an open receiver. If you get enough pressure from your DL the D-backs wont have to cover as long and you can drop more into coverage. So I say throw the bank at OL and DL.

  11. 102win says:

Not to mention the fact that we would also be signing McNeil away from a divisional rival.

    Quazzi,
I like Mays, but after watching Berry against my Gators, I think he is a step ahead. He stood Tebow straight up and played a great overall game against highly talented players.

  12. Quazzimotto says:

    102,

I really haven’t seen much of Berry but from what I understand he’s a monster in coverage. When I watch Mays tho I geek like Al Davis at the combine on viagra. He’s so big and so freakin fast its scary.

A lot of draft sites have the Browns taking either Berry or Suh. But in most cases both Suh and Berry are off the board by the time the Chiefs get to pick. I won’t be upset with either Berry or Mays. I just really want to see us sign McNeill and have the freedom to draft one of those 2 guys.

Hope this is why Pioli held back this season in FA. If he can pull off signing McNeill and any of New England’s front DL (or Seymore), along with Breaston and Pickett he’s F’ing brilliant. Hell, if he can just sign McNeill he’ll be my hero.

  13. hmills110 says:

Quazz: We all agree that OL is an issue. But I’d also like to see Berry or some other TOP defensive back be targeted in the 1st round. Albert’s playing about as well as any left tackle I’ve seen this season, with the exception of the Philly game, where it seemed like the line just gave up.

  14. hmills110 says:

I think it’s natural for there to be more players come in who have a Pioli/Haley connection, than otherwise. It’s not necessarily bad.

As for late pickups from New England and Miami, they were BOTH teams that brought in a lot of talent to address the right side of their respective o-lines. And you look at Bobby Wade, from Minnesota.

So these were generally smart pickups, considering the time of year they were made, targeting teams that had a surplus of talent in the position areas in question. The problem I have with Pioli is the time of year they were made! Chiefs were not very aggressive at OL and WR in the offseason. They did the best they could after the 53-man cutdowns, after it became abundantly clear that they hadn’t done enough, already.

  15. hmills110 says:

Kenny Smith pickup is just a minor pickup. I don’t think they expect great things from him. What’s significant is parting ways with Tank Tyler. Apparently they think they can get by just fine without him.

I expect it’s either 3-4 with Edwards, or 4-3 hybrid without him. It will be interesting to see just what transpires against the Chargers. Likely to see a lot of 2-4-5. Just not sure what the exact configuration will be.

  16. hmills110 says:

    Good discussion, guys.

I’m a big fan of left tackles, myself. But I think Chiefs could do plenty to fix what’s wrong without spending the 1st pick on OL.

I started this reply to disagree with picking up a LT in FA, but the more I think about it, the more it seems like a good idea to add a great LT and have another OL who can step in and be as great or nearly as great, and play G (or RT?) in the meantime.

  17. Quazzimotto says:

Addressing the OL is a top priority but there is WAY too much talent on D to draft an OT in the 1st round. McNeill would be a monster addition and allow several moves that would bolster our line-up on both sides of the ball to be sure.

I watched the Tennessee/Bama game yesterday and Berry is a stud. I wouldn’t be upset at all if they took him. Still like Mays, but Berry looked like a young Ed Reed out there and thats tough to pass on.

This team has an outrageous amount of things that need fixed and I don’t know that they can do it all next season. But damn, they better at least be competitive. Today was truly awful.
