Chiefs Trade Tank Tyler To The Panthers

by Chiefs

Fresh back from Vegas to see a Chiefs win and that Tank Tyler has been traded. From the Mothership (hat tip: Arrowhead Pride):

Breaking News: The Chiefs have traded DT Tank Tyler to the Carolina Panthers for an undisclosed draft pick in 2010.

This is huge news that shows that the Chiefs are not at all pleased with their nose tackle position, an integral part of the 3-4 system. Also, this is yet another Herm Edwards draft pick that has been jettisoned by the front office.

Zach:

Successful Carl 2nd round picks? Flowers anyone? Check out my latest article. I break down the drafts of the Herm era, comparing Carl and Pioli.

When was the last Carl Peterson draft where we had a successful 2nd round pick?

Randy, the late round picks suck because Carl Peterson was picking. The only guy he found was Jared Allen, so he got one right and then traded him. Pioli and the Patriots have a knack for picking players late. Lets see what he can do with all of these picks before we say no talent is coming in.

You know it has amazed me over the years how people blame WR for not getting open and the DB's NEVER seem to get credit for playing well. If a DB is doing his job right a WR should technically NEVER BE OPEN. A GREAT QB should be able to hit guys like Moss, Welker, Ochocinco, Smith (Carolina), Bowe, THE BEST TE IN NFL HISTORY TG, Boldin and Fitzgerald no matter what the coverage is, IF HE HAS TIME IN THE POCKET. Our teams problem is that MC doesn't get the hourly protection guys like Brees, Brady, Peyton, Palmer and the like are getting. Once he gets that he will likely be able to find the unopen guys like Bowe and let them make a play for the ball like Trent Green did on MANY occasions with Tony G.

Tank was serviceable but not good at NT. As far as talent coming in, O'Cal has made the RT look better than it has in years, Copper is a ST stud, Bobby Wade has done well on returns and as a receiver, Belcher has done well at LB....

Engram and Goff have been a total bust, but overall I'd say we have a better team now than 6 months ago.

I do agree I'd like to see a new C and RG ASAP, but I do see improvement almost everywhere. Not leaps and bounds, but steady improvement. The WRs need to step up though, they are a major disappointment with the drops and not getting open.

Unless we cut Engram, I don't see bringing in Galloway. Galloway and Engram will choke off playing time for young players that hopefully can develop.

Why in the world are we looking at WR's and not O Line or D line? What is wrong with the talent we have WR right now? Nothing I say! We have DBowe as #1, Wade or Bradley as #2 and either QL or TC could be VERY good as #3's. These guys need time to gel with Matt, who in turn needs OL to give him time to throw the darn ball. We don't need Freaking Joey Galloway. He is washed up compared to what we already have on the roster.

Like most of you, I think Tank will work out for somwone else. Just dissapointed we once again sent a high draft pick packing for a unknown late draft pick.

We need to bring someone in. NT just shot up My needs list.

Who do we have even remotely big enough to take his place?

all Im sayin is I want some influx

just for workout kcdan, no contract - yet.

PFT.com is reporting Joey Galloway is headed to KC

Well honestly we had a pretty good infusion of talent at the beginning of the year.

I'm somewhere in the middle of Randy and Vrod.

It is very easy to be 1-5 and criticise the personnel moves. But two thoughts come to mind.

First, Pioli said from the start, it's not the most talented guys, it's the right guys.

Secondly, I remember waking up to the news that Albert Haynesworth was signed by the Redskins and cursing Pioli for not going to get him. Well, look where they're at in DC.

It is very hard to be patient (especially with having to watch the Donks go 6-0), but I'm glad we have Pioli and not the likes of Jerra' Jones or Dan Snyder calling the shots. Throwing money at talent, and no idea how to build a winning team. Hell, Dallas has 3 RB's better than ours, better WRs, better TE, etc and they are not a playoff team. Talent doesn't equal wins in the NFL. Just ask SD, Dal, Sea, Car, Oak, etc...

I thought Tank looked pretty good in the games where he started at NT earlier in the season but I ultimately agree with what Vrod says about him not really being suited as a NT for the 3-4. We really don't have any dominant NT at this point which is why I thought Pioli might use that first pick to get BJ Raji. Anyway, as far as Tank Tyler is concerned, I believe that Pioli intentionally limited his playing time to minimize risk of injury so that he could shop him. I find it a bit frustrating that we are at the point where we see a 3rd round DL pick with only 3 years mileage on him being trading for 5th round pick for what appears to me to be no other reason other than a scheme change. I understand that we converting to a 3-4 but at the same time I can't help but notice that teams like New England do just fine running a hybrid defense. While we're waiting to get the personnel we want, why don't we do the same?

Adam,
I don't believe this departure in any way casts a negative reflection upon Herm or Carl's ability to draft quality players. It typically takes at least 3 years to develop a defensive lineman. Tyler only had 2 years under his belt within the 4-3. Asking him to convert into 3-4 NT in his 3rd year is a pretty unreasonable demand even though he seemed to do a halfway decent job of it when given the chance. I believe he will eventually develop into a pretty good player but as has been, or will be, the case with guys like Kawika Mitchell, Bernard Pollard, and Turk McBride, to name a few, just not as a Kansas City Chief.

Long story short, look for Pioli to acquire a big NT during the offseason because Edwards isn't really getting it done either.

This is intentionally a garbage season for Pioli so I don't think Clark Hunt or anybody else should complain about empty seats or blackouts this year. Not fair you say? Well just look at Denver - they also have a first time head coach, a new QB, and 25 players on their roster that were not on the team last year and guess what - they're 6-0.

Randy:
Got to agree with vrod on this. And I think you need a good break brother. Maybe a fishing trip will do ya good lol. There is a long season left probably filled with good and bad for us. Catch the big one for us!

I know VROD your right may be mixing some personal feelings in there I liked the Tank, but I dont see talent coming in, just future draft picks that never work for us.

I don't know about that Randy. I am not sure Tank was really a player designed to play a 3-4. He was more of a 4-3 type of guy. Plus he has never really done much in the way of showing he can play up to his draft position or higher.

This year has just been written off and probably the next one.

This is BS. We are sending all of our talent out. Not bringing any in.

Well now what? We are thin on D line as it is and now we ship out a serviceable player, at best? Not sure about this move.

Kent Babb is reporing this is for a 5th round pick in the 2010 draft. I was hoping for a 4th.

What the HELL now we are all out of Tanks & Turks...
