Dedric Ward Demoted

From Profootballtalk.com:

“The Chiefs have fired demoted wide receivers coach Dedric Ward.

The move comes six weeks after Kansas City handed offensive coordinator Chan Gailey a pink slip.

Ward’s replacement will be Richie Anderson, a former running back for the Jets. Ward remains on staff, but in what capacity is unclear.

Head coach Todd Haley refused to comment on the maneuver Wednesday, but had expressed discontent with the Chiefs’ wideouts throughout training camp. No. 1 receiver Dwayne Bowe was even benched at one point.

Haley, a former receivers coach himself, has played musical chairs at the position into the season. Mark Bradley and Bobby Wade, who signed off the street on the Monday after Week One, have been shuttled in and out of the starting lineup. According to the Chiefs’ website depth chart, Bobby Engram is a third-stringer.”

Haley is again lighting fires, (or maybe putting them out).  Sound Off Addicts!

Yet another example that Haley is in over his head. You fire your OC two weeks before the season starts and then five games into the season you fire your wr coach. I think it makes Haley look like a joke.

I don’t think it makes him look like a joke. To continue to do the same thing and expect different results is the definition of insanity. Through camp, preseason, and a quarter way through the regular season we are not getting it done. We have won 6 games out of the last 37 and while progressing, things still aren’t where they should be.

Haley said everyone is accountable; from the front office to the staff to the players.Maybe it has become obvious to Haley that the WR’s coach isn’t getting them properly prepared, he has put the coach on notice and when it didn’t get fixed he was removed.

Standing pat isn’t improving. Changing with a plan is the way to go. My big concern is if Haley is trying to do everything himself. There is no way he can coach the team, the offense, and the wide recievers. I’m not sure how a former running back can be a WR coach unless he is just a figurehead for Haley. But you never know.

Haley may be in over his head at this point. But I do know that the team has been in several of these games this year. They are playing like they know there is a win right around the corner. If they go to Washington and win, is Haley a joke then?

We have a brutal schedule, but I believe we are on the right track. We do have a ways to go yet and there will be more changes coming. And unless the defense gets going in a big way and soon, I doubt Pendergast will be here next season either.

Moreover, Haley stated early on that no one will work harder than him. I don’t think he’s fired the WR coach to help prove himself right. I think he’s not getting the results he wants and just because hes not getting them doesn’t mean that that changes what he wants.

The 4th QTR tying drive with Dallas shows he has these players buying in. When Dallas went ahead with barely 2 minutes left everyone in tvland knew it was all over. But that didn’t happen. The players clawed and scratched their way down field and tied the game up.

After leading the game for more than half the game and then getting behind like that late in the 4th, the old Chiefs would have collapsed in on themselves. That didn’t happen. They didn’t give up, didn’t quit, didn’t fall apart. Yeah we ended up losing but that drive spoke volumes for me. I can’t wait to see what happens with the Redskins.

Richie Anderson has been involved in coaching WRs. One or three respectable Post-ers on ArrowheadPride thought Ward was a joke the minute he was named. The fact is, despite our all hatin’ on the KC O-Line, this team has NOT had much help from its WR corps, and they’ve done about all they’re going to be able to do this season @ WR, about all they can do now is change coaches to hope for an improvement.

I no longer think KC has a brutal schedule. I think the brutal part is over. I think everyone they’re facing from this point forward has exploitable weaknesses. Whether this exploitable Chiefs team actually WINS many of those matchups is quite another issue, but I think they’ve played the WORST ball they’re going to play this season against the very BEST teams. Yeah, they let the Faders game get away from ‘em, which they shouldn’t've, but the remainder of the season is going to be EASIER for them than what they just went through, and I include PIT and JAX in that…

sgtducttape: I think KC will win, because Jim Zorn is one guy I’d have mixed feelings about hurting. *sigh* Washington needs a new GM and a few healthy O-Linemen more than it needs a new HC, but I think Zorn’s head is likely on the chopping block if KC wins, which I REALLY hope will happen. Sorry, Jim. I LOVED your talent and spunk from the Seattle days. Too bad you can’t buy the groceries for the meals you’re cookin’.

  6. 6. sgt_ducttape Says:

I agree. If an 0-5 team (any 0-5 team) goes into FedEx Field and comes out with a win, Zorn is probably done. But his fate was sealed when he went to work for Snyder. Like working for Al Davis or Jerry Jones.

A real surprise for me was how well the Broncos have been playing. The Chargers are a solid team as well; we still have to play both of them twice. Also the Bengals, whom are playing like they actually have a team, are much improved. So that leaves the Raiders in Oakland and the Bills and Browns.

Personally I’m hoping for 4 wins this year instead of the 6 I called for in preseason. I made this adjustment after demoting my opponent evaluator.

  7. 7. sgt_ducttape Says:

    The 4 are:
    Washington
Oakland (cause that shit ain’t happenin’ twice)
    Buffalo
    Cleveland

If we could beat the Chargers at Arrowhead before the bye, that would be HUGE! Going into the bye on a 2 game winning streak could change the rest of the season.

  8. 8. dbk301 Says:

Haley hired these people and then quickly fired them. So he is either a bad judge of coaching talent or overreactionary. It makes him look like he doesn’t know what the hell he is doing either way.

  9. 9. dbk301 Says:

BTW……There is no way in hell this team is winning four games. Dallas had key turnovers, tons of penalities, and played as bad as they could play and we still couldn’t beat them at home. There isn’t four wins left on the schedule for the Chiefs.

I sometimes think the fans are over their heads. They have many forums to say what they want with no accountability. They are hidden behind their computers and will say anything for the shock effect.

  11. 11. Double D Says:

    toma,

What I hear you saying is that when things do not go well, the fans should just shut up and take it. Or perhaps show no interest at all?

Besides, why should fans be held accountable for anything? After all, they’re the ones being asked to cheer on and financially support the show that One Arrowhead Drive is trying to sell tickets to, right? And if the performance is bad . . . ?

If I go to a restaurant and the food and/or service are terrible, should I just hold my tongue, pay my bill, and tip my waiter 20%? What message does that send to the owner and staff?

  12. 12. hmills110 Says:

dbk: Whole new staff. First time he’s assembled an entire staff. Team is poor and lost every game so far. Go easy on the guy. He’s changing things as he sees reason to change them. Some of us questioned his choices early on (I didn’t know enough to question them), and most of those choices that were called into question have since been un-made. Not a huge deal.

I’m still stickin’ by my “Chiefs are a .500 team that can sneak into the playoffs if they get some breaks; otherwise, they finish somewhere in the 6-10 to 10-6 band.” Heh. Pretty much impossible to hit the high end of the prediction, but I’m stickin’ by their being basically a .500 team +/-, depending on whether they catch some breaks.

I think the Broncos are going to hit the wall, here soon. Big as the New England win seems, it was a squeaker and New England is NOT the dominant team of a couple years ago.

I’m just worried that in 3 more games, I’m not even MATHEMATICALLY in it, as far as my prediction of a .500 or better season went. I can still suspend my disbelief (I’m pretty obstinate, ya know…) for a little while longer.

  13. 13. cclary Says:

I think that Haley sees something that is not up to his standard and wants to make a change. We are not at the practices to see how coach ward works with the receivers and to see if he is a good receivers coach. I think it was a good move. If you watch the games even when Cassel has a little bit of time to throw it looks to me that the receivers are having a difficult time getting open. I think a little better coaching might help that part of the game.

I agree. The “fans” called for the firing of Herm last year. And now we are stuck with the Toddler. After the Chiefs go 0-16 those “fans” are still going to be claiming it was the right decision.
