Please excuse me if you think I am a homer, but Mr. Lombardi has me a little steamed. You see, his current article lambastes Todd Haley. Why? because Coach Haley yells at his players and gets upset when things go wrong.
Hmmmm, I know some really successful coaches who do that and they seem to get the best from their players: Parcells, Coughlin, and even Cower to name a few.
Herm Edwards was the poster child for being calm under pressure, where did that get him, and Romeo Crennel, and Rod Marrinelli and thier teams?
Using his argument, one would say that the Indianapolis Colts have been this great for so long, because Tony Dungy was so calm? Do you believe that for one minute?
If anything, the Chiefs have needed a hard nosed coach ever since Marty left. Haley is the perfect coach for the Chiefs, and I see the players falling in line. Mr. Lombardi is trying to create a story where none exists, in fact he admits that “I have not been in the locker room, nor have I talked to Chief players.” Then why bother us Lombardi? Just shut up.

He`s telling Todd Haley about self control, maybe thats a lesson he should teach to Tom Cable, Since Lombardi used to work for the Raiders…After all I don`t remember Haley breaking anybodys jaw…
THAT FROSTS MY MILK
Yeah the real funny part is on Showtime’s Inside the NFL, he admits to tampering while with the Oakland Raiders. I would think the league could nail him for that. Such an idiot. I would rather listen to round boy from the Star.
I guess I am going to take Lombardi’s side on this just a little bit. I have never seen Cowher, Coughlin, nor Parcells throw f bombs at players every time a mistake was made. In my opinion, they have always picked their battles.
What’s more, as Head Coach, Haley’s job during a game is to put almost all of his focus on coaching the game and very little focus on coaching players. He should be coaching players during practice and coaching games during games. He needs to leave the sideline player discussions to the position coaches and coordinators.
Chewing Jackie Battle out for Monty Beisel’s mistake or yacking his jaw at a non-impact player like Quinten Lawrence for 5 minutes serves no useful purpose when the high priority stuff is happening out on the field.
I really believe that Haley needs to get his emotions under better control. Just like his players, he is not perfect and needs to develop better skills in this area. Don’t get me wrong, I do think that Haley has the potential to be a really good coach. However, if he doesn’t quickly start making some progress on this front, he truly runs the risk of losing the attention and respect of his players. If he loses those things, not only will he lose more games, he will lose this team.
DD,
I will agree with you on the point about dropping F bombs. I am a former sailor and I drop them all the time, not proud of it either. I try to curb that as much as possible when not at work, but sometimes emotion will get the best of you. He does need to watch his emotions a lot better, but it is good to see a passionate coach on the Chiefs sidelines again. I was REALLY beginning to miss Marty-ball!!!
I use the f bomb a lot too. It’s just part of my normal speech I guess and perhaps even moreso in the heat of battle but if I do, I find it’s more effective to toss an “eff” at the situation rather than the persons involved.
As a vet, I’m sure you’ll be the first to admit that boot camp is the best time for busting chops, as opposed to when the bullets are flying. For me, I guess it alls comes down to the whole “grace under pressure” thing.
I wonder if the refs grew so angry and tired of hearing him rip them apart with f bombs that they called terrible penalties despite him. I remember him saying “thats how the f you play qb brodie!” in Baltimore when he threw that touchdown. If his team is playing to the level of his satisfaction, he is less likely to tongue lash them.
I want the team to play better too. I feel like the guy is a breath of fresh air for this franchise. Remember Haley’s press conference after last weeks collapse? He put as much blame on himself as he possibly could because he understands the buck stops with him. How many times did you hear Herm do that after 26 losses the last 2 years? How many tired cliches about young players and their lack of experience and how you have to live with their mistakes did you hear the last 2 years? Haley will not tolerate that at all. You are paid a hell of a lot of money to block and not hold, to catch the ball, to not fumble, to not throw interceptions, to tackle, to know where you’re supposed to be. If you don’t, it’s unacceptable and you will be replaced.
I think its great. These are grown men we’re talkin about. Grown men being paid millions of dollars. If they can’t handle being yelled at and having F-bombs thrown at them, then I don’t care how big and tough they are, they’re pussys. Suck it up or go play for a different team. We’ll find men who don’t cry cause coach said a bad word.
I actually agree that the money element is a fair point. At the same time, everybody reaches their breaking point where the money doesn’t matter anymore. I mean it’s kinda like, are you a whore or are you a man?
