Merlin's Magic: Offensive Line Blinders Edition

by Features

Over the years, I have been very frustrated by the lack of attention the Chiefs have paid to drafting quality offensive line talent. It seems that whoever runs the drafts (Carl, Kuharich, Pioli) seems to forget about the line when draft time arrives. It wasn’t that long ago that the Chiefs had their best offensive line ever (Roaf, Waters, Wiegmann, Shields and Tait). Tait left after the 2003 season and the descent started. I don’t blame Carl for losing Tait. Tait got left tackle money from Chicago and we could only pay him as a right tackle. When Tait left, we also had Roaf and Shields near the end of their careers. We had three holes to replace soon. Attention was needed. Quality draft picks were needed to groom their replacements.

Offensive line is a set of positions where you can develop lower round talent into good starters. However, you do need some quality draft picks. Let’s take a look at that great line as an example. Roaf and Tait were both first round draft picks. Shields was a third round pick. Neither Waters or Wiegmann were drafted. It’s a bit heavy on the UDFA’s but the idea still holds. Three of your starters were drafted in the first three rounds of the draft.

Starting from 2004 to present we have selected seventeen players in the first three rounds of the draft. Just how many offensive lineman have we taken? Answer below the fold.

The answer is: one, Branden Albert in the first round of the 2008 draft. Not coincidentally, he is the only young lineman we can count on. After that, you have to go all the way down to round five to find just one more offensive lineman we drafted, Colin Brown in 2009 . Addicts, this just isn’t going to cut it. Is there any wonder our line is not doing a good job? We can try to patch with older free agents and try to develop low round selections. However, we need to invest more quality draft picks in this critical area. You can easily trace our downfall to the decline of the offensive line. Carl deserves the brunt of the blame for this. However, not the entire blame. What was Scott Pioli thinking when he took over? Generally, he has made solid moves, but the lack of attention to the offensive line is, in my opinion, his biggest mistake so far. He looks at the tape of our line play and decides that one good solid vet FA (Goff) is all it will take to fix the line? We don’t need to draft a player high? Even though the recent draft was loaded with good center prospects, we don’t need to draft one?

Addicts, it just this simple. We will not be a good team until we get better offensive line play. Pioli is either going to have to shell out big bucks for a good young FA offensive lineman (i.e. Jason Brown from last year) or he needs to spend some first day picks (plural) on offensive line talent. Then, we can develop a line that will stay together for years. Speaking of years, Brian Waters’ time is short. Yes, that’s one more hole to be filled.

Carl simply wasn't good at drafting linemen in the 1st-3rd rounds. Offense or defense. OK, ya gotta give props for Neil Smith, but otherwise? Tait was good, but during those years, Peterson was painted in a corner and resorting to bullying tactics, from most reports.

Peterson did a poor man's version of SF and DAL, mortgaging the future to pack his teams, he got wrong-footed, and stayed wrong-footed, always making poor-man's choices and squeezing every possible penny out of negotiations with a LOT of players, and overpaying a few others. All trying to maintain a grip on things, when he prob'ly should've taken a decent deal for Tony G. years ago...

ikeadcd:

I don't believe that is true. The Chiefs put a transition tag on Tait and had the right to match Chicago's six year, $34 million offer sheet. We couldn't afford to do it.

I've got only one problem with your post. It's not even relevant anymore, but we should blame Carl for losing Tate. I can't find the figures anymore, but Tait took nearly identical--slightly less if I remember correctly--money from the Bears than what he was offered here. Carl had just been such a bastard that he wouldn't consider re-signing in KC.

hard to watch... really hard to watch...

And NO I don't have a Best type man crush on Richardson! I just saw him fighting (almost literally) with the D-line in Saturday's debacle against the seachickens. I think if he has that kind of heart then Haley and company might be able to make him into another Tait type player.

So does that mean we scrap Albert if he starts to struggle? Why would ANY young offensive lineman want to play for us if we give up on them after one season of backing up what were supposed to be 1st string veterans. I agree that Rudy sucks, he has had more than enough of an opportunity to prove himself. I don't frankly believe that can be said for Richardson. Can anyone else? I do know one thing if you don't give Barry a legitimate shot at the starting role and keep SACKINTOSH in there, then they are basically gonna have to keep Thigpen and Guiterrez in this year. Then next year in the uncapped season they can sign some stud OL's and see how cassel does under that line next year.

Im not ready to scrap dorsey. We cant operate with the current offensive line. We have GOT to do something. I get sick when the offense takes the field.

I don't know about Richardson, but I'm not ready to scrap Dorsey. I am curious what will happen this next off season (especially when it was rumored they were trying to move Dorsey before the draft this year). I hope he does well. Only time will tell.

I agree OL is imperitive. They're as bad as trying to watch a SciFi original and those only get worse. In all honesty will Pioli really draft OL (or O anything) with a high 1st, when he has the chance to take a standout defender instead?

Speaking of Brown, I don't recall seeing him in any of the preseason games. Has he been hurt? Does no good to draft the guy if you aren't giving him the opportunity to excel. I think Barry Richardson will be fine once he settles into full time play. Right now the kid is overwhelmed because he no longer will have a good blocking/Receiving TE like TG. I think everyone is giving up way too early on guys like Dorsey and Richardson.
