PLEASE PLEASE EVERYONE LET ME CLARIFY MY EARLIER POINT I do not believe this was Todd's plan all along. I DO think that he thought about taking on the responsiblity of play calling from the start but was advised not to take on so much as a new head coach. That being said I believe that taking over the play calling now is now something he may enjoy doing. Thats what I meant. Sorry!

If i may put my spin on it.

You see, Kansas city right now, is... Lets say, a Prison.

Haley is the new guy to this prison and everyone knows the new guy has to stop his authority or get stomped. Its basic prison law. Now if you will, let me run you through haley's progressions from the "new guy" to the "Don".

First thing he does; Picks a fight with a big black dude named Waters (Ironicly named since he never cries). This doesnt go to well, the warden gets involved, alot of exchanged words but nothing really happens.

Second; He immediately starts gathering a crew of familiar faces... he gets this one guy named Clancy (Clancy dont call him the Nancy boy or else. Yeah that Clancy) from his old prison. He knows he has to establish pack dominance so he moves in over the old crews and gets a few guys transferred out.

3rd; He brings in a few old timers and a guy from the pysc word. (Beisal the needle for one, and this guy called "big matt castle"). Yeah i know big moves you think? Anyways, "big matt" came from a max security prison so hes carrying this huge rep with him, but i know hes nothing without his old crew.

And now the biggest and boldest move in his plan for prison supremacy. Haley shanks the Old wise caretaker. Poor old Gailey never saw it coming, he was just doin his job in the library and got done. Apperently Haley (or the DON, as things progress), didnt realise the prison library doesnt open till september 13th, and got real mad cause he couldnt get any good books out before then.

the tale begins....

I don't think his intention was to completely take over, just make suggestions. And no, I think he was very sincere in his press conference. I'm sure he was thinking more about the responsibilities of being a new HC and felt that he'd have too much going to be able to handle that aspect. But I also know its hard to give up something you love doing and try to be a backseat driver when you know you can do it better. And I think that's what we're seeing now with this move.

see your point, but your post made it sound as though this was his plan all along and I don't believe it was. Unless of course he is lying to the press.

It would be extremely frustrating to rely on someone to call the plays when you have Todds obvious play calling talents.

Vrod:

Never said he was a control freak. Only that this is HIS team and he wants it to be modeled in his own image. Sounds irreverent, its not. He likes to be in control, he wouldn't be a coach if he didn't. And there is no WAY he was going to sit by and not call the shots. Yeah he's the HC, but come on, OC has been his passion. And after coming off of last season? You bet he wants to call his own plays! I'm not bashing him one bit, just pointing out he's got this by the reigns and I think that's how it was always ment to be. Interested in seeing his creative mind at work!

D I never said that Haley over rode anyone. When he was first hired several sources described his decision to give up the play calling duties difficult because it was the part of his previous job he enjoyed the most. That being said I think that may have made his decision to take over the play calling duties one he is eager to wrap his hands around. My opinion only.

Vrod:

I always have an eye towards the draft when I watch the Chiefs play or I watch college football.

quazimotto,

if you listen or read the press conference from today you will realize he is NOT a control freak. I think this was done as a knee jerk reaction to get this team rolling again.

And Guys, why are already looking at the draft next year? How about we start that kind of talk after like week 8 or 9? At least give them a chance to get going. The whole system and way of thinking needs time to change.

DD:

My point is that I don't care who you bring in to play QB. Until you solve the o-line problems we are in trouble.

What is he 6'6" or something? Maybe he can block?

Short-term, I hope we take a look at Kevin O'Connell.

Haley likes to be in control and no doubt he's been itching to call the plays for some time now. After watching the Chiefs play calling last year, run up the middle twice, throw on third down, punt, repeat, it seems like something has to give. I like Chan, I think he did the right thing by implementing an offense Thigpen could thrive in. However, this is Haley's team and he wants it run his way. Will it work? Probably not with Thiggy. Look for Gutierrez if Cassel remains sidelined with the MCL.

In response to draft prospects next year, I hope we pick up Terrance Cody, NT from Alabama. I know, we need OL too, but Pioli never drafts offense 1st round, and with what looks to be another high pick, and the highly possible scenario of being stuck with it again, Cody can't be over-looked, literally.

Maybe we are doing an NBA move purposely trying to suck to get the number one slot which this year looks like QB bradford....than Pioli "The Genius" will trade out for picks and pick up prob like 3 future all stars and all will be well. Duh guys c'mon dont you know the plan.

Randy,

Can you explain the Haley overriding what ownership wanted comment? Where are you sourcing that from?

Just pulling your leg VROD you could be drunk and he could also do a good job! I think when you have a guy who called the plays for a team that went to the Superbowl recently you need to give it a shot. Like I said earlier I'm not taking this year to seriously I think its a LEGIT THIS TIME rebuilding year. If I remember right Haley DID call the plays and not Warner....

Randy,

I think you are right. Haley wants full control and now he has it. Question is: Can he handle it?

Good point DD. But maybe CP was just trying something out to see if our guys could handle it, not to mention to cover for our Flowers wilting (going down) due to injury.

Randy5k,

Not sure what post 18 is about. Could ya clarify please. Thanks.

I do find it interesting that all the press I have seen so far says that Chan has been relieved of play calling duties instead of Chan is fired.

It sounds like Haley wanted to call the plays anyway but the ownership thought it would be too much for a new Head Coach. That puts a diffent spin on things in my opinion.

Vrod, I thought the D looked good early on as well. But then they switched to that soft-coverage, prevent D crap and got torched. Repeatedly. That had more to do with scheme than talent.

I'll lay 3-to-1 that this went down something like this:

Chan: We're so screwed. You guys have no idea how bad we are right now. If we try to run a traditional offense right now we'll go 0-fer like Detroit.

Pioli and Haley (in a glassy-eyed unison monotone): No. We're putting in a system. We're going to get it right.

Chan: You're idiots if you think a traditional system is going to resemble "right" with this bunch. Put Thigpen in the shotgun and I can run all kinds of ridiculous stunts that work until at least halftime.

Pioli and Haley (still in a glassy-eyed unison monotone): No. We're putting in a system. We're going to get it right.

Chan: You are wrong wrong wrong. The Thiggy shuffle is our only chance to be competitive.

Pioli and Haley: You're fired.

Not a mutually exclusive situation VROD

Unless I was too drunk didn't alleman do a good job when he was in?

SDChief - I'll bet Cassell doesn't think he's overrated. When Brodie is carted off in Baltimore, LJ get 17 yards on 30 carries, and our longest pass play is 7 yards due to no protection, maybe you'll change your stance.

It was a knee jerk reaction and Haley and Chan likely had a disagreement and Pioli sent him packing. Sounds a bit like the Marty situation with the dolts. In retrospect though, there were some stupid calls for offense on saturday, so that may be the reason for the "release from duties".

DD,

I thought the defense actually did ok in the beginning of the game before the 2nd and 3rd string guys got in. The D got worse because they were letting the guys they want to evaluate play more. That is the only way they can find what they need. Tyson Jackson looks like he is going to be a beast on the line though. Or was I smoking crack while watching the game?

plus, Ike may step up, Alleman has potential to step up, and then, they may still make a move for a WR....there is hope, it takes time to undo the mess vermeil left with bad drafts, then herm with a lot of bust picks as well.

then dont root for them...those OL available include jason brown, considered very overrated and not worth the cash...so do we overspend on an upgrade who isnt the answer or wait till we find an answer...I think they felt that Niswanger was decent enough to make it 1 more year.

I guess Gailey was'nt part of the "RIGHT 53".

Who are we anyway? The LSU Chiefs or the Kansas city tigers? I can't remember!

Remember when we had all that cap space and failed to use it on adressing the offensive line until the OL well dried up and we picked up (reread Merlin's comment now)? Getting very hard to root for this franchise.

Come on guys, we aint winning a superbowl this year. I think we have an excellent chance of getting to post season. Why? Because we are in the worst division in the league, heck in the HISTORY of the league. Keeping Chan or firing him, we have a chance to play in the post season either way and then getting a good solid junk punch after that. I am content to sit on the lot, play bean bag toss, and watch heads roll. If Matt has to sit out some games due to an injury, its probably a blessing in disguise, we dont need to be subjecting him to career ending injuries in a season that matters not. Put Thiggy out there till we get the O line right.

Wow! I just had the worst nightmare. I was a die hard fan of the laughing stock of the NFL. I was being laughed at by Raider fans and Donkey fans.

Seriously, will some one wake me up now. PLEASE

DD:

Good question, but I think it needs to be rephrased. What LSU player will we draft #1? lol

So who does everybody think we should take with #1 overall pick? :)

Mr. Pistol Offense is gone, so why is Tyler taking first string reps? I would imagine Tyler is going to be traded, since Gailey is gone.

I don't like this move at all. Gailey is good. Seems too much like a knee jerk reaction. I bet they had a fight and Haley sent him packing.

Everyone knows I am Mr. Upbeat, but I am begining to worry/borderline panic.

Sorry but until I know more about how this came to be, I honestly can't find anything refreshing in this - not 2 weeks before the start of regular season. What my gut is telling me right now is that we'll come to look back at this moment as the beginning of "the meltdown." Feels emotional instead of logical.

Randy:

True, but I would prefer that the change... mmmmmmmm you know..... actually address the problem. The problem is that the o-line doesn't do a good job. Surely Pioli and Haley could see that when they broke the tapes down from last season. So, what did they do? Sign Goff who hasn't looked good, waited till the 5th round to draft a development lineman and traded for dolphin 2nd/3rd stringers. Oh and signed the weak link in the Bengels line. Now, they trash Chan when the line sucks? Try looking in the mirror Scott Pioli. Looks like you screwed the pooch on this one.

Good thoughts DD. Honestly its SO refreshing to see staff changes when things turn to shit instead of excuses.

To be a fly on the wall . . . I can only imagine how this all went down.

Look for Chan Gailey to be a key figure within Bill Cowher's next staff.

Interesting development to say the least. Pioli does nothing substantive to improve the OL. The OL still can't block. QBOTF gets hurt. Solution? Fire the OC!

Based on the worthless schemes I saw the D attempting Sat night, I would have sooner expected to see Clancy Pendergast's head roll. Prevent Defense? Puhlease!
