Arrowhead Adventures….Seahawks vs Chiefs

by Chiefs
From my seats one hour post game.

A view from my seats one hour before the game started.

I’ve stated earlier I love preseason games and its true. My friend and I had a great time and so did the fans I interacted with who came out to enjoy the great weather. Even though our sixty million dollar quarterback was taken out, I think we both had quite a bit of optimism as we walked to car to finish off the BBQ leftovers.

The three hour ride home in the middle of the night gave me and my friend Becky plenty of time to ponder the day and I had an optimistic out look about the 2009 season. I really enjoy attending games with Becky, she is a big Chiefs fan but has not been following them the last three or four years. Don’t we all wish we were so lucky.

Thank goodness the media was there to straighten me out.

Even though there were more people there Saturday than I have ever seen at a preseason game, and the tailgating was great, the media reminded me that the stadium was “less than full”. What the hell does that mean? It’s what the fourth largest stadium in the NFL? Preseason games rarely sell out unless you buy the snake oil Favre sells and bring him aboard like the Vikings. Never mind we have to fill a huge stadium in one of the smallest venue’s that holds the NFL sell out record . Never mind that I’m about the only schmo season ticket holder that actually shows up to the games to represent the regulars.

The media proclaimed that the crowd was “antsy”. Not sure what that means, everyone seemed to be having a great time enjoying beautiful weather and a chance to see what our lower ranks could contribute. During the fourth quarter the stadium was represented to have let out a flurry of boo’s for the home team . Not in my stadium on the Saturday night I was there .

Which leads me to another pet peeve of mine. The way the preseason games are presented.

Season ticket holders are charged full price for a glorified scrimmage involving players that might  never wear a pro uniform again. Despite this, the media and the smart asses that I trade quips with at work the next day inform me that the “Chiefs suck bad this year”.

Oh well, the media and the smart asses won’t spoil my optimism even though I’ll spend the next couple of weeks explaining all this to friends who don’t really want to hear it.

All this will change of course when Oakland comes to Arrowhead in about three weeks. The way we play will be how we really are going to play. The way the crowd reacts will really be how the regular stadium fans feel.

Until then news media members and local smart asses, when it comes to the attendance and crowd reactions at Arrowhead, don’t suggest something should be fixed that ain’t broke . Not broke yet anyway.

Oh well at least I don’t have to defend the BBQ.
