I woke up today and saw headlines like this while surfing the web for Chiefs news and views:
Cassel rusty in Chiefs’ loss to Texans (NFL)
That statement also represents most of the Chiefs message board buzz and talk radio chatter.
Some Chiefs fans aren’t giving Matt Cassel much of a chance to begin with, are they? Others have darted straight to “here we go again” territory. I’ve got a message for those fans: slow your roll and exercise some patience.
Last night was a glorified practice for a completely renovated team that took place in a freakin’ monsoon. Even though it was raining, the instruction manual for the Patriot Way doesn’t say “just add water.” Let’s give this process some time, and let’s especially give our new quarterback some time. Hell, we gave Brodie Croyle two years — I think we can give Cassel more than two quarters.
Besides, Cassel connected on two of five passes in limited playing time in downpouring rain. If his receivers could catch an STD in an Amsterdam brothel, he would have been four of five. He didn’t have Dwayne Bowe, who was back to being The Show when he finally checked in last night. He didn’t have Amani Toomer. He had Rudy Niswanger losing a snap to the rain. He had Chan Gailey locked into full Herm Edwards playcalling mode. When Gailey and Todd Haley did opt to throw, it was typically on third down.
It’s clear that the coaching staff wants to take baby steps with Cassel during this preseason. It’s also clear that we think running the ball is our best chance to remain competitive. that’s why I expect to see a lot of both Jackie Battle and Larry Johnson. Given last night’s coaching strategy, not to mention the circumstances, how much could have realistically been expected out of our new quarterback?
Honestly, I was impressed by Cassel. He connected on his first pass. He avoided a sack he would have ate last season. On a third down, he had an impressive scramble pass that Sean Ryan should have hauled in for a first down. Again, sans Dwayne Bowe and at the helm of a new offense, how much could we honestly have asked for? He may be Tom Brady’s former apprentice, but he’s not gonna step up and be Brady on Day One. Let’s be realistic and, more importantly, fair here.
Fellow Chiefs fans, let’s please give Cassel some time. This could be the kid we’ve been waiting for since 1983. Let’s not stamp “return to sender” on his forehead and ship him back until we’ve fully inspected the goods.
Some patience should be extended to Haley and the rest of the new regime, too. I know some people are rooting for him to fail (hey, Jason Whitlock is desperate for someone to bag on these days — his grocery bills ain’t cheap), but Rome wasn’t built in a day. Rome also never had to recover from being under the rule of Caesar Edwards.
