That’s the money quote from Dick Haley in the recent article in the Star referring to his son, Todd Haley. For those who don’t know, Dick Haley is close to a scouting legend. He was one of the people that had a large hand in the Steelers of the 70’s, for example. If the NFL ever honored scouts with a spot in the Hall of Fame, Dick Haley would be a serious candidate for that honor.
Recently, Todd brought Dick in to evaluate the Chiefs. I would encourage everyone to read the full article. I did take some points from the article. There were two big points, the first I highlighted in the title and the second one is this:
Todd has a delicate and time-consuming project ahead. It’ll take players, Dick Haley said, and it might take years.
Frankly, Addicts, that is not a positive sign. “It’ll take players” means we don’t have enough talent. “it might take years” tells us that we are more than one more draft away from contention. For those Addicts who think we could be an 8-8 team this year, this might give you something to think about.
The most positive quote is the “he knows what good is” quote referring to Todd Haley. It is a very high compliment. Evaluating what level of skill is needed in each skill for each position is very, very difficult. That knowledge is essential and not common. This makes me feel better about our coach. Todd’s pedigree is impressive, but his resume is light. He has the skills to be a good coach. However, he has to perform. As he tells his team they have to prove it, so we should use that same standard to evaluate him. I am encouraged, but the proof is in the play on the field. Dick Haley’s words are words to take to heart. This could be a three to four year project. Hang onto your hats, Addicts, this looks like a longer ride than we want.
