What’s up, Addicts? Adam reporting from Ohio here. Yesterday we arrived in Cleveland and visited the Hall of Fame. Walking from our parking spot to the Hall, we saw a huge banner of Derrick Thomas hanging from the stadium. That’s when it hit me; this is actually happening — D.T. is going to get into the HoF.
When you walk into the Hall, all of this year’s inductees have a panel dedicated to them in the entrance tunnel. That was the first of Derrick Thomas was everywhere. Mugs. Stand-ups. T-shirts. Hats. Programs. Fatheads.
We talked to quite a few Chiefs fans who are also up here for Derrick. As far as non-Chiefs fans, it was nice to see the level of respect they had for our beloved No. 58. It’s very exciting to see my favorite Chief finally getting his due, but that’s not all I am excited about.
I can smell the NFL season. It’s in the air — football time, baby. Walking through the Hall, looking at the busts, I felt like Jamie Foxx hearing Al Pacino rave about the greats of the game. I looked at the open slots for Derrick and the other 2009 inductees, and then I looked to my right. Who else we make the Hall? Adrian Peterson? Maybe. Jerry Rice. Michael Strahan. Tom Brady. But what Chiefs?
Tony Gonzalez will be there. So will Willie Roaf and Will Shields. But who else? Zach Thomas? Not even a real Chief, at least yet. Priest Holmes? Didn’t dominate for long enough. Larry Johnson? Same. What about the young bucks? Really too early to talk about any of them, and we may never need to talk about them. Then again, Dwayne Bowe is the best Chiefs receiver in Chiefs’ history through his first couple seasons. Maybe some day, with hard work and a lot of luck, he can do what Otis Taylor could not.
We’ll keep you posted for sure. We’re heading to Browns training camp today to feed our football fix. It will certainly be interesting to see another team remodeling itself with the original Patriots model in mind, even if the architect hates the Patriots now.
