If it’s not Whitlock, then it’s mofo Teicher. This mindjob is now suggesting that our best young defensive player getting beaten out for a starting spot by an aging, possibly even washed-up, vet would be “good news.” From The Kansas City Star:
4. Color them Brown
It’s a good sign if veteran strong safety Mike Brown wins a starting job ahead of Bernard Pollard. It means the 31-year-old Brown can still make game-turning plays that he did for so many years with Chicago. Other than free safety Jarrad Page, who has shown the knack for making the big play at the right time, that element has long been missing from the Chiefs’ defense. If Brown does win the job, he might be the biggest immediate impact defender acquired by the Chiefs in the offseason, bigger than Tyson Jackson, Zach Thomas or Mike Vrabel.
Um, other than two Oakland games and one pick against Peyton Manning in the playoffs, when has Page really made that many huge plays? And was Teicher sleeping during all the turnovers Pollard was involved in last year. I really can’t wrap my mind around this one. Color them Brown? No, color you stupid.
I just don’t get it. There are a lot of fans, scouts and writers who swear by Pollard. I myself am a Pollard backer. Then there are those who act like dude’s a straight bum. Might as well be Jason Belser back there as far as they’re concerned. More often than not, those are the same people who put Jarrad Page on a pedestal.
Here’s my opinion. Page is a free safety who gets beat way too often on the pass. He also whiffs so often on tackles that I once stated about him, “the only place you’ll see a 44 miss that much is when a blind man goes to the shooting range.” Meanwhile, Pollard is more than adequate for a strong safety in pass coverage, especially considering our pass rush. He’s also a better tackler and stronger against the run.
Look, I like them both, but I definitely scratch my head when people act like Page is unquestionably the better player. What games have you folks been watchin’?
Anybody else agree that Teicher is nuts on this one?

I also believe Bernard Pollard is one of the best players on our team,,, that guy hits like a ton of bricks!!!!! I really like watching him play,,,, not sure about this Brown guy and Page is great but Pollard is better,,,,, GO CHIEFS!!
IMO, Pollard goes for the highlight reel hit to much and doesn’t wrap up enough. However, I agree Adam. That Tiecher comment had me scratching my head.
Last season, I regarded Pollard as the closest thing to being the defacto leader of our hapless defense. If Brown can (finally) stay healthy and play up to his potential, I could see him growing into that role. I’m sure some of you will quickly react to that last comment and say no, the leadership role must now be either Vrabel’s or Thomas’ to lose but I don’t subscribe to that outlook for the simple reason that neither Vrabel nor Thomas are very likely to consistently contribute at a high level, each and every week, for an entire game, over the course of a 17 week season. Tell me I’m wrong.
DD:
You’re not wrong about Vrabel and Thomas, however I’d put Brown in that same category of not being able to play a full season. I take their silence either of 2 ways:
They’re mad they are here, especially Vrabel since he lost bonus money in the deal (I believe, or the Chiefs had to pay it?), and/or they think the team is bad and they have nothing good to say.
You hear everyone talking about how they have been brought in to be a leadership presence on the team, but shouldn’t a “leader” be fairly vocal? I have seen and heard nothing from any of those 3 guys, which makes me fairly concerned about the defense.
I don’t know how Vrabel was prior to coming here as far as interviews and such go, but he’s been mum to this point.
Regarding Brown vs Pollard, Pollard gets the upper hand to me. He was the unlucky guy getting the finger points from everyone the last couple of seasons when people were missing assignments, not passing off the correct guy, Ty Law, Pat Surtain, etc, etc. He was the one who got the blame for the mistakes of the 10 guys in front of him. I would like to see him wrap people up rather than trying to knock them out, but he seems like a pretty class act on and off the field. Everytime I’ve seen him put a guy on the ground, he’s always the one to extend a hand to help them up. Actually kinda pisses me off on occasion.
I still wear my Bernard Pollard Fan Club t-shirt with pride. He is the reason the Chiefs have Matt Cassel right now, even if it was by accident. Unless Pioli would have traded for him as a backup with NO experience? I don’t know. Regardless, I like Pollard.
I understand where you guys are coming from. but Brown at one point was a pro bowler and I belive still has the talent he just seems to get hurt more often than not. who knows what could happen. The worst case is that brown gets the nod and either sucks or gets hurt and we put in pollard who really is a lot like brown when brown is healthy and in his prime.
I don’t know if I am supposed to do this but i am an espn insider member and they have reported that the Kansas city Chiefs have given Hali the ultimatum of learning linebacker or being traded, just thought i’d let you guys know that
Im gettin’ the crazy idea we could use Michael Vick
I want Vick to go to Cleveland. Vick in the dog pound would just be to funny.
HA!
I like Pollard. Always have. But whether he or Page is the better safety is really a question with no definitive answer at this point.
I think Page is probably a better defensive back. Pollard would certainly fit much better than would Page in a sort of “Loboback” safety/linebacker hybrid position, though.
The bottom line is that Teicher is kind of right when he says it would be a good thing. If Mike Brown wins, he was probably the better option and it was a good acquisition. Pollard could still play a pretty big role in the defense with his skillset and he could also focus on making a big impact on special teams the way he has shown us all that he can.
ps. we don’t need Vick, we have Thigpen.
I am now hoping that Vick gets his chance and shows that he can do some good. I am pit bull owner and love my D-O-G. The dog thing I am sure we could talk about all day.
Why I am cheering from him is because now he can do a ton more good helping charities like the Humane Society and other organizations.
If no one gives Vick a second chance then he could end up in our prisons just wasting away tax payers money instead helping. He could help out more people then most people could ever have the opportunity too.
Now its up to Vick to show he has accepted that 2nd chance and is going to do something with it.
(Merlin, I still like your Cleveland comment!)
100 percent agree Adam.
Why Page is considered so much better? I think its just due to draft position, people got upset that we took pollard so early, he had an uphill battle from the start for a lot of fans, whereas page was looked at like this amazing pick due to position(which he was for a 7th rounder)
However, Page DOES get Beat more often, Page does well in the red zone, thats about it.
Pollard in my opinion is the better player, I dont understand how Teicher makes that statement
I actually think Brown is here for Page’s Job.
Zach Im with you, a guy does his time he should get a second chance I think, as long as the time fits the crime. That being said I would be very curious to see how he would be received by KC fans ( I know it wont happen probably). Id take Vick or Thigpen any day, I mean look how Paul Crewes played in “The Longest Yard” (either version).
Granted, Crewes probably got more time to throw than a KC qb ever would.
Bernard Pollard had the LOWEST stop rate against the run of any starting defender last season.
He has no business starting on an NFL defense.
When healthy, Brown was a leader. Some say his coverage skills have deteriorated, somewhat.
The thing about Pollard, to MY eye, anyway, was all those mistakes people’re saying the LBs should’ve been blamed for instead of him, just reinforces the fact that the LBs were giving (or trying to give) the DBs a lot more help. It looked to me like Gun protected his safeties from having to think much.
I think Brown’s a great insurance acquisition, and if he plays up to the level he did in Chicago, he SHOULD win the starting job, and it will mean that KC got BETTER at safety. At 100%, Brown is about as good as it gets. Having him on the roster at all should give the young safeties and corners a lot of veteran wisdom, too.
