Over/Under on Pioli

AUTHOR: jeremyhanson | IN: Chiefs | COMMENTS: 23 Comments

Scott Pioli was recently named “personnel man of the decade” by Matt Mosley of ESPN. Which begs the question, how many games do the Chiefs have to win this year for Scott Pioli to live up to his hype?

8 BUT thier gonna win the west so 8 dont matter

  2. Double D says:

No worse than 3-13 for certain.

I have another question though. If no players are allowed to have an arrowhead on their helmet yet, why should Pioli (or Haley for that matter) be wearing one on their shirt/hat/whatever? Bluntly put, what has anybody within this new regime done to earn one at this point?

  3. KCKID-58 says:

I think we will finish at least 8-8 this year at least.I hope we don’t finish like the lions did this year 0-16.

  4. Whir says:

I’ll say 6 wins, just to have a number, but really, I don’t think this season matters as far as Pioli’s legacy is concerned. He’s taking over a complete mess of a team. I know complete turn-arounds are the flavor of the month in the NFL these days, but I don’t expect a miracle this year. 6 wins would be progress with a tough schedule.

  5. spillman69 says:

I believe Whir has it right. 6 wins would be a realistic improvement. Expecting anything more than that and you are setting yourself up for a letdown.

  6. TheDirtyBird says:

I am going to say the Chiefs win 5 games this year. The team is on it’s way up and if Cassel is as good as you guys hope he will be they could challenge for the division sooner rather than later.

  7. chieflonghair says:

I would really like to see us make a good showing in the division,,, and lets win 8 while were at it……. GO CHIEFS!!!

  8. brainsmasher says:

Pioli is not taking over a mess. Clark cleaned out the mess. Pioli couldn’t have landed in a better situation. The jury is out on Haley. If he can coach as good as advertised then the sky is the limit.

  9. woody says:

This year doesn’t matter that much…it is the next three or four that will make or break him…

  10. Merlin says:

Nice post Jeremy. IMO, this year is pretty much a pass. Winning more than six games would be a surprise. To live up to his hype, playing in a Super Bowl in the next four years would do it. Bonus points for doing it sooner and/or winning the Super Bowl.

  11. bbq says:

Considering the state of the Chiefs for the past two seasons, I would consider going 8-8 this year a comforting sign of success for the new regime — assuming the team continues to progress.

  12. ArkansasDave says:

    Wins!
    2 – Cincinnati/Cleveland/Baltimore/Pittsburgh
    1 – Dallas/NY Giants/Philadelphia/Washington
    1 – Jacksonville/Buffalo

With the state of the division. I think winning 5 of 6 divisional games is a decent possibility… Even 4 wins and your at .500

That’s enough to win the division… Doesn’t seem that farfetched.

  13. BOWEFAN says:

10-n-6 Baby ……….I feel the team has gone in the way correct direction.
Cant wait I am sooooooo “READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL”

  14. ikeadced says:

Sheesh, .500? 10-6? Really? With WHO? Does anyone remember how brutally awful the defense was last year? Yeah yeah I remember Herm was the coach and everyone hates the cover-2. But LOTS of teams have had success with it. The fact that teams ran all over the defense last year had NOTHING to do with scheme.

Now this year we’re going to depend on guys who couldn’t play their NATURAL positions well to play NEW positions better???

If this team wins more than 6 games we should build a 2-headed statue of Pioli and Haley.

  15. CHIEFS FAN IN CT says:

If there’s more than 6 wins this year I will be pleasantly surprised. I’m with Woody: it’s going to take more than 1 season to see what the verdict is.

    Double D,

The difference is Haley and Pioli (et.al.) have already made the team. Everyone else (i.e. players) has not.

  17. Double D says:

hammer – How is that? I thought the point behind “earning your arrowhead” was to prove yourself worthy to be identified as a Chief. So exactly what have Pioli and Haley accomplished to say they have “already made the team?” How many Chiefs’ wins can they currently claim? They’re under contract pretty much like everyone else aren’t they? Why make the distinction?

  18. the hammer formerly known as g.l. says:

    Double D,

Well, you asked, so I told you. They are hired (not tentatively) to do their job based on their past performances. They are not going to be “cut”, they are management and have therefore earned the right to mold and shape the team in whatever way they see fit. If their performance is not up to par, they could lose their job down the road. But, for now, they “are” the Chiefs. Whoever can get on board with them and earn a place on the roster will be the new Chiefs. Shoot, that’s just the way it works, man. You know that.

  19. Double D says:

Yeah well if you’re Bill Parcells, with a proven track record, you can get away with this kind of stuff. Unless Haley sees quick success, my gut tells me this “earn your keep” approach will blow up in his rookie coach face. In the NFL, style doesn’t count for squat unless it produces more W’s than L’s.

If “earn your arrowhead” is going to be the identity this team wants to instill then it really needs to apply across the board for everyone except the owner(s). Pioli and Haley will earn my respect with consistent, meaningful wins. This is what living in the “Show Me State” will do to you after a while I suppose.

  20. ikeadced says:

    Double,

The lack of a distinction between the players and the head coach was part of the problem in the past. There is a distinction because there needs to be a distinction. I share your opinion that these 2 haven’t done anything yet. However, because they are the ones who have to evaluate who is progressing adequately, they are the ones who have the arrowheads to hand out.

If they get theirs by being the bosses, then they are no different than players–an approach we are all sick of.

  21. the hammer formerly known as g.l. says:

Both Pioli and Haley will have plenty of chances to “earn their keep”. As a matter of fact some of the things which have already transpired will show beyond a shadow of a doubt we are moving in the right direction as the season plays out. The wins will come, no doubt about it.

  22. IISaiNtII says:

Cassel has been signed to multi-year deal.

  23. CHIEFS FAN IN CT says:

That smock he’s wearing reminds me kind of “Dr. Evil” looking thing.??
