Can Larry Foote Be Persuaded To Become A Chief?

Per the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, linebacker Larry Foote has finally been released by the Steelers. He will turn 29 years old in June of 2009. He has successful experience in the 3-4 defense, and is a tough player who has started every game over the last 5 years. Can he be persuaded by Pioli and Co. to pick the Chiefs over the Lions? Do we want him?

Sound off, Addicts…

Quazzimoto: Reason Foote wasn't in there in passing situations as often was Pitt was developing a rookie with more speed at that position. Even if Foote's very very good at ILB, a simplified pass-rush role for the rookie got him into the lineup, and maybe improved the pressure overall.

I'd rather have Anquan Boldin or Marvin Harrison. I feel like we're OK at LB for the time being. Time to give Cassel some weapons.

OL should be our first priority. We at least need someone half-assed respectable to play RT. Protect the Cassel investment.

I say we go after Foote. He is still pretty young and has experience in the 3-4 defense. This guy could be another veteran linebacker that Pioli seems to be looking for. Imagine our starting linebackers looking like this:OLB- D. Johnson,ILB- Z. Thomas,ILB- L. Foote,OLB M. Vrabel......not bad!

GOD YES WE WANT HIM!!!!!!!!!!

I am not against Foote, I just don't see us getting him. Detroit would get such a boost from him, I'm sure they are eager. Also, it seems that is where he wants to be.

From our side of the street I think we still need help on the O Line; protecting the QB and making holes to run thru. We have some depth at LB, although adding a player who has "been to the show" and has a ring to prove it could be a huge impact for our up and coming guys.

Without a doubt he is a proven commodity. I'ld be very happy to welcome him to the red and gold. I just don't think it will happen.

Although saying he would like to end his carrer with the Lions is kind of oxymoronic. LOL!

I might be wrong not 100 postive but the caps at 127 and we have to spend 86.4% of that.which is a little over 109. The chiefs current cap space is 31 million which puts us at 95. Due to the nfl rookie pool we can spend 5.5 million this year. so if my calculations are right.
95+5.5=100.5 is what we will be at after signing rookies.
which leaves 8.5 million to spend, not really sure where else we can spend it i know they can weight contracts so they will count towards this year but that still alot of room that HAS TO BE SPENT.

Whats your thoughts on what we should do and if you see any mistakes.

Foote has proven to be dependable and very durable. And at only 28/29 he still has some good years left. He is NOT a sack machine, only 14 and a half in 7 seasons, but he is a role player and plays his well.

2 question marks that stand out about Foote are:

Why he lost playing time (generally on passing situations), which is what facilitated his release. And second, he WANTS to play for Detroit until he retires!!???

He's a Detroit native and feels he should give back to his community, which I respect, but at the same time, Detroit? I think he'd be a good fit for us, but I don't know that we'll get him. Sounds like he's pretty set on where he wants to go. And with Detroit picking up Hicks, you know they'll sign anyone that might've been good in high school. So they'll be sure to jump on a decent pro, especially if he WANTS to play for them.

Good point, redbeard. We might get to see a little more street ball with our mobile QBs.

I'm the last to say we need to go after a LB in the first round, but with the new defensive philosophy, assuming we're close to being set up front on d-line, the game now is to find the LBs who will be most productive behind them. I'd certainly give him a look, but I'm no Steeler LB expert.

I don't think reaching the minimum is an issue. The key, it seems to me, is to not be in any tearing hurry on any of this. Can we be aggressive in pursuing the players we really want? Yup.

I hope we sign him and then go after Boldin or Edwards. I think this team would be very competitive next year if those moves were made.

I say we sign him and try to land another DE and WR!

Just a question but why is it that we only talk about meeting the minimum Salary Cap amount and not going beyond it a little bit? I know the Chiefs are not the Redskins but we could stand to put a little money into our D before next years uncapped year.

I would love for this to happen. Foote has been great for years and could provide that extra veteran touch in the LB Corps while being able to stick around longer than Thomas and Vrable. He would be a great inside tackling machine and it would allow DJ to stay outside where he likes to be, maybe rush the passer a little. It could cost a little bit but our defense would be lookin pretty solid.

I believe if we were gonna spend the money we would have by now, if pioli wanted to spend it they would have on the first couple of days of free agency. But at least we know we have to spend the minimum which is most likely 4 million after rookie contracts

I dont think Foote is on our Radar, after the draft i think Pioli and Co. believe we are fine at LB. I could see us making a move for Quan still. Pioli knows what the addition of a gamebreaker WR can do for a team.

Also i havent seen have we signed any of our rooks yet i know its only a week but just curious??

yes he could, but NO dont

remember we have a break out wideout...

we brought him back this year, sip sip sippio

we have a coach now who will allow wideouts to run , not exactly correct routes.

also sounds like cassel gonna sign his deal before the season so that will give us more cap we will have to spend to meet the minimum

I sure hope that pioli throws a little money his way, it looks like after the rookies are signed we have 3 or 4 million left to spend to meet the minimum. our linbacking crew would go from a weak point last year to a very strong point this year, just move DJ outside. Dudes a really good LB and prolly would start for 2/3 of the teams in the NFL.
