Chiefs On The Clock: Who Will Be The Pick?
Update: Follow my Live Draft Diary here for now. We are working on moving it to FOX Sports, so hang with us.
DE Tyson Jackson to a chorus of boos. I can’t say that I feel like a million bucks right now. Not a sexy pick, but “in Pioli we trust,” right? Let’s hope he is the second coming of Richard Seymour, Chiefs fans. Overall, I’m just thankful the Chiefs didn’t pick a coverage linebacker at No. 3 overall. This is more of an impact position.
Sound off on the pick of Jackson?

tyson jackson…..this sucks
April 25th, 2009 at 2:26 pmWtf
April 25th, 2009 at 2:28 pmTrade Gonzalez and don’t even draft a top 10 player in the draft with the third pickt? This move makes no sense.
April 25th, 2009 at 2:29 pmomg
are u f-ing serious….
try to spin this pick adam. I dare you! great start from the trinity. picking the worst possible player at 3…..
at this point, i would rather herm and carl picking for us. Worst start to the new regime…..
April 25th, 2009 at 2:30 pmI hope in a couple of years we will think this pick was one of the best ever.
April 25th, 2009 at 2:33 pmBuilding the team inside out. Just because he wasn’t in our top 3 doesn’t mean anything. Apparently he was their BPA. I think they’ll go OT or 3-4 tweener LB with the 3rd round pick if they don’t trade up for one. Pioli knows what he’s doing. That has to be the mantra at this point…
April 25th, 2009 at 2:35 pmAnd a swing and miss. What a wiff. Talk about completely overthinking the room. Apparently Belichek wasn’t available to help Pioli out because he is WAY over his skis. If it is true that Detroit made us an offer than this is a HUGE mistake. I don’t care how much you like a guy you don’t take the 15th best player available 3rd overall. Terrible.
April 25th, 2009 at 2:39 pmThat was an awful pick. As a senior:
A DE with 4.5 sacks?
He averaged 2.5 tackles a game.
He was a 2nd team all SEC…how about taking the 1st team guy?
For those comparing him Seymore…Seymore was a 2 time 1st team SEC selection and a 1st team all American.
April 25th, 2009 at 2:44 pmWe are really going to try to win more than 2 games with any 22 guys off the street.
April 25th, 2009 at 2:46 pmIt’s amazing how everyone hates Pioli now. Jesus Christ. Calm down.
April 25th, 2009 at 2:48 pmAm I doing backflips? No. Am I suicidal like some of these people? Nope. I’m skeptical but still optimistic. The weekend just started. Let the man work. If Jackson develops like Sims or Siavii, then we can riot. But let’s reserve judgment for the time being.
April 25th, 2009 at 2:49 pmChill out…it is a smart pick…
April 25th, 2009 at 2:49 pmHe makes us better. In Pioli I trust. Talk about some serious LSU love in the 1st round for the Chiefs eh?
April 25th, 2009 at 2:52 pmPioli said no sizzle…guess he wasn’t kidding.
April 25th, 2009 at 2:54 pmDarrius Heyward-bey Ok I feel a little better about this jackson reach
April 25th, 2009 at 2:58 pmFor the sake of argument…what has Pioli done to earn the trust of Chiefs fans.
1. He traded effectivly a 1st round pick for a QB that may or my not be as good as Thigpen. (I agreed with this move)
2. He signed a couple of aging free agents that will be lucky to stay healthy through training camp.
3. He gave up a HOF TE for effectivly a 3rd round pick next year.
4. He just drafted a guy 10-15 spots too early…when the Jets would have traded up (they did it 2 picks later)
There are two picks no draft guys like one by the Chiefs and the other by the Raiders…that should tell us something.
April 25th, 2009 at 3:00 pmWhy is it a smart pick, other than the fact that Pioli mad it?
April 25th, 2009 at 3:02 pmYeah curry was a coverage LB that just happened jto have more sacks than an SEC DE…i think Jackson is a good pick just not TOP 5 material….He better be easy to sign and sign for #15 money
April 25th, 2009 at 3:03 pmI am not saying Jackson will make us better. With the money you pay the third pick, you need a pro-bowler. How can a guy who wasn’t even top 4 in the SEC his senior year a pro bowler. This guy will get a $72 million dollar contract and $34.75 million in guaranteed money (three deal from last year).
April 25th, 2009 at 3:06 pmThe pick reflects the change in scheme on defense, also the guy seems like the kind of player Pioli normally wants on his team. Maybe this is why some people were projecting him to go to the chiefs with this pick. Makes sense to me that we would take the player most likely to come in and complement what we have as opposed to taking some all star who doesn’t fit our model.
April 25th, 2009 at 3:06 pmzman: That might be part of it. If signing quickly and for less is part of the deal, the Chiefs add the guy they want for less than #3 money. We basically won’t be worrying about anything bad happening on his side of the line.
I’m not looking for spectacular stats from individuals. This is the kind of unglamorous pick that doesn’t show up until you look at team D against the run or sack totals by other players. And if the D is sound, our blue-collar front will pick up its share of tackles for loss and sacks.
April 25th, 2009 at 3:16 pmAgain I like Jackson just not at #3 Im assuming there was no trade partner that wanted 3 bad enough and still allow us to get jackson 8-11 range. At least we kept another player from going to Denver and Oakland reached even further than we did
April 25th, 2009 at 3:19 pmThis signals to me that the Chiefs aren’t looking for sacks from the DL, so much as SOLID play. Assuming the Chiefs have accurately assessed their situation in the middle of the D, this is exactly the kind of pick I like. Apparently NT is taken care of.
Jackson’s a good fit for our hybrid D. He’ll hold his own on the inside at DT in a 4-3 look.
Still hoping to see something happen at corner. I’m confident that the LB corps can be stocked, if the DL is taken care of.
April 25th, 2009 at 3:22 pmPositives: Versatile defender who operated as an end in LSU’s base 4-3 alignment, but could also be moved inside as a 4-3 under (3-technique) tackle or as an end in the 3-4 alignment. Good team defender. Understands his containment responsibilities. Excellent size and strength to stack at the point of attack. Flashes the ability to shed blocks and make the play. Good initial quickness off the snap. Can pressure the tackle’s outside shoulder and has the strength to push the blocker into the pocket toward the quarterback or use his hands to rip off the block. Gets his hands up in the passing lane. Good lateral quickness and hand technique to disengage from blocks and make the play as opportunities present themselves. Hustles to chase ballcarriers downfield.
Negatives: Bit of a ‘tweener for 4-3 teams. Lacks a great burst upfield, closing speed or repertoire of pass rush moves to ever be a dynamic outside pass rusher. Marginal speed to close. Does not change direction quickly in the backfield to prevent quarterbacks stepping up or getting yards with their feet.
Compares To: MARCUS SPEARS, Dallas — Jackson shows flashes of brilliance but you can see an overall lack of consistency in his game. He is probably a better fit as a defensive tackle, where his adequate burst and change-of-direction agility will not be exposed as they would on the edge. That versatility will likely make him more inviting to a team that will utilize a 3-4 alignment.
April 25th, 2009 at 3:32 pmThis was not a bad pick, Jackson is one of the top DE / OLB prospects. Remember, building a team, even Michael Jordan couldn’t do it himself with only 5 guys on the court. Until they built a team they went no where.
Oakland and Denver reached way farther. SD on the other hand, that’s a little scary.
James and Rey in the second round? WTF ??
April 25th, 2009 at 5:36 pmI find it interesting that under Herm Edwards and The King last year, everyone was doing jumping jacks. Now, this year we get the REAL King, and after one pick, Chiefs Nation is all pissy. This is great … I’m loving the reaction. Jesus Christ. Pioli isn’t an idiot, but I guess the fans know best …
April 25th, 2009 at 5:53 pmyeah rey rey in the second round wow!!! i guess the question marks about him were real. I hope our O-Line is ready for san diegos D. That Defense looks scary good. And thank you Denver for not heloing your d
April 25th, 2009 at 6:00 pmI am still “in Pioli we trust” and in light of Whir’s statements Pioli might still be a “Genius”. But, when you make a choice that goes this much against the grain……you better be right. If TJ is the next Seymore we will hail Pioli as a “Genius”. If TJ is the next ryan simms…..we will hang him with it…mark my words. Im still on the “Genius” bandwagon…for now.
–I am the voice of the wilderness and I bring you a warning–
April 25th, 2009 at 6:09 pmLooks to me like SD’s thinking is pretty conventional. Those pass-rushers get lots of ink, but I’m more about the d-line, and it could be argued that KC got the best 3-4 lineman in the draft.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:17 pmI don’t think there’s any danger of Jackson being another Ryan Sims. With Sims, the Chiefs did what lots of people do: they confused the system and supporting cast with the player who benefited.
If anything, the scales were tilted against Jackson. After his early big splash, I think he received a lot of attention, and we’re not so much wanting him to get sacks as to disrupt the blocking schemes and create opportunities for his teammates.
April 25th, 2009 at 7:20 pmI think is a matter of Pioli wanting to instantly improve the worst position on the field for us. While some of you might argue that somewhere on the right side of the OL is that spot, I saw a stat the other day that said we gave up 8.5 yards per carry on stretch runs to the right.
So just to clarify, not only does Turk McBride sack no one, he also cant keep a running back, fullback, mobile quarterback or even a fat kid on a scooter from getting around the edge on him. Jackson will immediately be a step up from that and while I think he very limited upside, unlike Crabtree, Monroe or even Orakpo, I think we can be fairly sure that Jackson will be a consistent starter as long as we need him to be.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:04 pmI think TJ is a heck of a player, although its likely KC couldve slid back to at least 17, while picking up a 2nd and 3rd. For that, I hate the pick. Not the player, but the pick. At 3, Crabtree, Curry, or trade would definetly have been getting the most out of our misfortunes.
HOWEVER…
Glenn Dorsey’s huge 2007 college season?? Playing next to Tyson Jackson. Jackson had his best years as a soph-junior, next to Dorsey. They both seemed to work well together, and helped team up to win a national title. Its definetly a wait-and-see, but LSU West’s future looks bright.
April 25th, 2009 at 8:05 pmNow that the 1st day is in the books, who do we go with with the much anticipated top of the 3rd round pick?
April 25th, 2009 at 8:31 pmDunno, Dr. Paine, but I like Mizzou’s point. Dorsey and Jackson were dominant in college, each better for playing next to the other.
Just the opposite of the melodrama I feared might take place with Monroe pushing Albert aside, just as he did in college. The reunion we have is clearly a happy one.
So when I first heard of 4-3 under, I saw Jackson as the guy on the strong side. First thing out of Pioli’s mouth was Jackson outside the tackle on the weak side. The reunion theory then puts Dorsey next to him playing the B gap outside the left guard.
April 25th, 2009 at 9:33 pmBut where Pioli said he wanted Jackson is NOT where the scouting report I pasted put him.
April 25th, 2009 at 9:38 pmAnyone notice what our fellow AFC West teams did today. Oakland….WOW! They took a projected FA in the first half of the second round. Denver….WOW! Moreno to go with Buckhalter,Jordan,Arringon,Pittman,Torain, etc. San Diego…..WOW! Larry English to go with Merriman and Shaun Phillips.
If we had a bad pick, atleast it was better than these idiots! Did Al pick a relative or something in the second.
April 25th, 2009 at 9:48 pmi agree that this pick may potentially strengthen both jackson and dorsey at the same time.
look when pioli came to town we were all singing his praises. i really question the tony trading, and while my first instinct was to trade down, i like this pick. all ive heard is how hes a great fit for our defense and thats what definitely needed the most improvement.
pioli has proven to work miracles, lets all let this one play out and then judge
April 25th, 2009 at 10:00 pmin pioli we trust
Dr. P
I think O-line or wide receiver. maybe another LSU tiger- Herman Johnson or the kid from Alabama Antonie Caldwell. If its a wide receiver maybe Thomas from Arizona.
April 25th, 2009 at 11:42 pmIf we wanted a 3-4 end we got the best one in the draft. Just not an exciting pick which I think we are used to in the first round. The place went wild when we picked Dorsey and Phat Albert last year and now “yawn” so yes I’m with you Woody its a smart pick.
April 25th, 2009 at 11:43 pm$6.5 million in cap money to Tony G if we kept him. That’s a lot of money for a 2-14 team.
Spin in these parts about the Denver RB pick was the importance of the RB to that system of offense, and maybe the current crop in Denver doesn’t fit the mold. But yeah, I’d have to have a pretty good team already built before I threw a 2nd-rounder at RB.
