Stafford Inks With Lions, Chiefs Basically On The Clock

by Breaking News

Matt Stafford just signed a contract with the Lions that’s probably worth more than every home in the Detroit metropolitan area combined. Meanwhile, if you ask me, Smith is all but headed to the Rams. That means that, for all intents and purposes, the Chiefs are on the clock. Here is how I am handicapping the Chiefs’ No. 3 overall pick possibilities…

  • Aaron Curry 3-1
  • Eugene Monroe 3-1
  • Tyson Jackson 4-1
  • Trade 5-1
  • Brian Orakpo 6-1
  • Michael Crabtree 10-1
  • Everette Brown 20-1
  • Field 50-1

Those are just my thoughts based on what I have been reading and hearing. Personally, I don’t think the Chiefs will take Curry. I think the pick will be either Jackson or Monroe, or a trade out of that spot. I guess we’ll know pretty damn soon. I think our spot has now become the trade-up destination for Mark Sanchez enthusiasts (Jets, Redskins, etc…).

Addicts, how do you handicap the Chiefs’ draft possibilities?

Trade-down seems unlikely, but Pioli sure was talking like he wants/expects more picks in the 2nd and 3rd rounds this year. Will Waters/Hali/Dorsey still be with us tomorrow?

Washington wants Sanchez BAD, but what do they have to offer for our #3? Unless they can give up their first for next year (Pioli does like to stock pile picks), they don't have much to bargain with. If we had 11, 28, 42, Everett Brown, any of the linebackers (Curry aside), maybe Tyson Jackson, Britton, Mack, and Unger could/will be available. And Kruger, Nicks, and a host of others could still be around for pick 42. But that's a LOT to give up for an OT though when there are so many quality ones throughout the board.

Waters is our only hope for a trade down, and while Waters wants out, I just don't see anyone wanting to pay the price for the #3 slot. I've long held that Monroe is KC's pick at #3. However, with the departure of Tony G, I think it's really a tossup. Cassel needs protection AND targets....and LJ needs holes. While there are a few high-end OT standouts, there are many in this year's draft that would be an upgrade to the Chiefs current line. Hence, I think Crabtree is a real possibility...never thought I'd say that. Crabtree probably helps Cassel AND LJ more than Monroe.

Good call. Buffalo would need to give all that and maybe they get Waters back. However, why would buffalo give all that when they could give much less and move to #8 or hope Oher falls to them at #11? They are not going to know by #3 if the run on tackles will be on in the top 10. So, if they do it, they have to get Waters back. If we do it, we trade #3 and opened another hole for 3 picks. Unger would look good at #28, but are we giving up too much?

They will be quite fun, Merl. Additionally, we can all go back to being one big happy family at that point. Well, somewhat soon at least.

Imagine there's no Chubby Club...
No Curry Fever, too...
No need for offensive tackles...
And trading down's always a "can do"...
Imagine all the Chiefs fans...
Commenting in peace...

Adam:

I think you covered the larger set of players possible. Brown seems to have disappeared and Jackson came out of left field recently in the discussion. I still think trade down is Pioli's prefered move, but outside of Denver, I don't know who has enough to move up. It should be an interesting draft. Those ten minutes the Chiefs are on the clock should be quite fun.

Aaron Curry has my vote.

Buffalo has 11 28 and 42 and they want waters

Nice odds. I was thinking about this earlier.

What odds do you give Smith if the Rams should take Monroe?

Also...

If KC trades back, what do you think we can expect in return?
