Lions beat writer Dave Birkett is reporting that the Lions will pick quarterback Matt Stafford with the No. 1 overall pick. From Birk’s Eye View:
The Lions are close to agreeing on a deal with Georgia quarterback Matt Stafford to be the No. 1 overall pick.
Lions president Tom Lewand met with owner William Clay Ford for final approval earlier today, and the two sides could finalize a contract as soon as today. One source said a “catastrophe” would have to happen for the Lions not to draft Stafford at this point.
Can’t say this thrills me, but it does make the No. 3 pick a more valuable trade commodity. Hopefully, someone will trade up with us to leapfrog the Seahawks and draft Mark Sanchez. Otherwise, I think we could pick Aaron Curry. But here’s another name I’ll throw out there — Tyson Jackson.
Everyone loves to yap about how Scott Pioli selected a Curryesque linebacker 10th overall just a year ago. But what about when he picked 3-4 defensive end Richard Seymour sixth overall? Some people thought that was a reach, well, at least before all the Pro Bowl trips they did. Maybe Jackson — the best 3-4 DE in this draft, probably hands down — is not a reach at No. 3. Especially if he is willing to give us a discount in order to become the third pick.
Addicts, what does Stafford to the Lions mean for the Chiefs?

Time to trade down folks. I know, I know, it’s going to be difficult to pull off. Crazier things have happened.
no player is a reach unless, you want a different player.
we have to see if piolli wants to grab linebacker, o-line, or D-end.
which player fits what he is trying to do best.
I dont think the signing helps us all that much as before the signing(anticpated signing), we didnt see much of it either.
it does however show us that even the BIG QUOTE UNQUOTE PREDICTORS OF THE DRAFTS, DONT KNOW AS JUST YESTERDAY WE HEARD ALL ABOUT HOW THE LIONS WHERE GOING TO DRAFT CURRY…LOL
What I do know is that so far I see the chiefs as 200 percent better at footbal than they had been…
I see we draft o-line, with our new o-line coach, it turns us around quickly
and people dont worry about watters, he will do what he always does, show up and play
Um maybe b/c Curry is 10x better as a prospect then what Mayo was…and Mayo made Defensive Rookie of the year..thats why adam…you need to jump off that WR bandwagon….b/c its filled with garbage…lmao Crabtree saying he can run under a 4.40…now that his boot is off?? common the dude is a joke….he wasent even fast in college and always got ran down and tackled from the back. and he says he can run a 4.3?? lol
Mayo: 131 tackles
100 were solo
0 sacks
And this is why we dont need Crabtree
The Texas Tech receiver brought a diva attitude on his visit to the club facility last week and did not impress coach Eric Mangini and others, the source said. In fact, Crabtree was described by some in the building as “not nice.” After Crabtree left, Mangini secured last-minute workouts with borderline first-round receivers Hakeem Nicks of North Carolina, Kenny Britt of Rutgers and Mohamed Massaquoi of Georgia.
Stafford to Lions means Chiefs Trade #3 with either Jets, Redskins, Broncos(not likely), Vikings so they can take Sanchez.
One can hope!
Lions deny report that Ford has OK’d deal for Matthew Stafford
John Niyo / The Detroit News
Allen Park — The Lions denied reports Wednesday of an imminent deal with Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford as the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft.
NFLDraftBible.com, without citing any source, reported Wednesday afternoon that owner William Clay Ford Sr. has signed off on a deal for Stafford that could be worth $40 million in guaranteed money. The Oakland Press also reported the two sides were close to finalizing a contract Wednesday.
But Lions spokesman Bill Keenist called those reports “absolutely untrue.” Team president Tom Lewand and Stafford’s agent, Tom Condon, didn’t respond to phone messages left for them Wednesday.
On Tuesday, though, Lions general manager Martin Mayhew sounded confident that a deal for the No. 1 pick would get done soon, saying there was a “very good” chance it would be finalized prior to the start of the draft on Saturday.
10 times better than Mayo? Are you Curry’s agent? This is getting ridiculous.
With tyson jackson and seymour comaparison similar stats in thier senior years except tackles Seymour had 78 tackles and jackson had 38. But both had 10.5 tackles for loss and under 5 sacks
the lions have it appears signed a conditional contract with Curry…If stafford doesnt sign a contract with them for the same or less, the Detoit lions will sign Curry as the 1st pick this year
“Especially if he is willing to give us a discount in order to become the third pick.”
Interesting idea. Makes Jackson more appealing. But I don’t think Jackson can do as much in space as Seymour. My instinct on this kid is only if Chiefs get a good trade-down from a green-eyed competitor.
Still feel best about the OT pick, if one of the top 2 guys is still there. Stafford talk is still all speculation, although it it is sounding like if not Stafford, then Curry.
And this is probably crazy, but with Monroe on-board, and Albert being around, if another player developed and somebody else’s LOT goes down during the season, I have visions of Herschel Walker draft pick compensation…
Hey adam you want to ask Crabtree out on a date??
And the reason why I said Curry is 10x better then Mayo is b/c Draft Guru’s and NFL experts have said this…..so get that right
If Curry ends up being gone at #3, I would be seriously disappointed if the management does not make a trade, or go with Monroe. It would be ridiculous to take Crabtree in our situation with the holes we have on defence and on the O-line.
