Chiefs Start First Minicamp Under New Coach Haley

AUTHOR: jeremyhanson | IN: Chiefs | COMMENTS: 22 Comments

From the Associated Press:

They’ve watched film of the 2008 Kansas City Chiefs and spent several weeks with players in the weight room. But Todd Haley and his coaching staff finally got on the field with their team Friday.

Taking advantage of an NFL rule that lets first-year head coaches have an extra three-day practice session, Haley welcomed more than 60 players to the first day of a voluntary minicamp.

Haley said it was a learning session for both players and coaches as everyone strains to get to know everyone else. The Chiefs, who have won just six games the past two seasons, will have a mandatory minicamp the first weekend in June.

According to Todd Haley, who primarily watched the defense during practice,  the Chiefs Defense lined up in an “under front” (a version of the 4-3 defense?) for the enitre 36 minutes.

  1. This gives Haley and Pioli another chance to scout the team prior to the draft and assess draft needs.

    You got it J Train!

  3. eruleptanero says:

It looks like they’ve found the best way to utilize Dorsey and Tyler. The 4-3 under is probably the perfect system for both of them.

    Broncos looking at Sanchez!

  5. Randy5k says:

Do we trade em our first round pick?

  6. Chiefsfan7 says:

I don’t think the Chiefs should make a deal with a division rival. What if Sanchez turns out to be a pro bowl type QB? You’d be kicking yourself twice a year when you play them because you handed him over. I realize two first round picks would be ideal but you can’t take that risk of giving a division rival a franchise QB.

  7. Double D says:

I’d say it all depends on how high you rate Sanchez. Shying away from “what if” scenarios is just playing scared. Personally, I’m not all that keen on Sanchez and I would absolutely do the trade, division rival or not.

  8. Quazzimotto says:

I agree with Double D all the way. Sanchez is good and has some skills, for sure. Just don’t know how “good” he really is. I mean, he entered the draft early because he thinks/knows next year he wouldn’t be drafted as high. Good move on his part, but what does that say about him?

Who cares if its a division rival when they’re handing over 2 FIRST round picks? Picks that are going to make an immediate impact, possibly on both sides of the ball? That is very IDEAL, especially if we can’t get into the 2nd round. I’d make that trade any day. And if that offer comes up, I hope they do.

  9. dbk301 says:

You worry about what would make your team better and that is it. You don’t worry about what player the other team will get. In theory trades should make both teams better. The only thing Pioli would be concerened with is if having the 12th and 18th picks would make the Chiefs a better team than taking whatever player they would take at 3. Having said that, I don’t think it will happen. Trades into the top 5 just don’t happen anymore.

  10. 2383 says:

So kinda sucky news if you despise LJ: It looks as if he now wants to be a Chief and will be for at least the next year as Pioli seems very uninterested in trading him(acording to a recent press confrance). Isn’t this just special. All I have to say is gold paint can only stick to a turd for so long.

  11. Adam Best says:

Sanchez will make us pay for a decade if we allow the Broncos to snag him. Trust me on this one.

  12. Chiefsfan7 says:

Thank you Adam that’s what I’ve been trying to say.

  13. Adam Best says:

Just like Matt Ryan, the kid has “it.” He’s a natural leader and has all the tools. Seeing him in orange and blue would scare the bejesus out of me.

  14. redbeard says:

we are talking two first rounders…

making up for our lost second..

pull the trade of picks with denver and grab Boldin from Arizona
with our third and LJ instead of a first pick
    (just dreaming)

But I do like that Idea

  15. redbeard says:

BTW we all need to remember we have a football guy now who can see talent…

    unlike our last two GMs

  16. Quazzimotto says:

You’re absolutely right. I do worry about what makes our team better. And having 2 first round picks would definitely help because we NEED help, especially on D. I worry about our division rivals just like everyone else. Denver has 2 first round picks this year and next. To me that’s scary. San Diego could pick up Maualuga, and facing both him and Merriman? Also scary. Oakland? I’ll be afraid when Al Davis gives up coaching and they get someone that can. But you’re right again, very unlikely scenerio that a trade offer for the 3rd overall happens.

I don’t know about Sanchez. I like the guys abilities, he’s got charisma, he’ll be a good QB. No argument there. But we’ve had 2 Pro Bowl “caliber” QB’s in our division for the last couple of years in Jay Cutler and Phillip Rivers. And we’ve hung in almost all of those games. Won some, lost some, but we fought hard with lesser talent and still hung in.

Who’s to say Sanchez won’t be a star? But how many thought Ryan Leaf was going to be a star? Or that Brodie Croyle was our answer? I know I hoped Brodie would be our man but he wasn’t. Its nice to believe in your guy, and should he be that dominating force as you say, then hey, I give you credit. I was wrong, you were right. But for now (at the most important position in football), I’m not going to step out on a limb of faith for a one season college starter. Even if he does have a lot of class and the skills necessary to compete. College is one thing. The NFL? Its a whole new ball game. Just my opinion.

  17. Chiefsfan7 says:

Does anybody know if the Chiefs are one of the four teams Crabtree is visting with this week?

  18. redbeard says:

Quiz that goes for left tackle coming out as well…

  19. Randy5k says:

Id make the trade, someone will get Sanchez anyway. Who cares if he is in our division or not

  20. hmills110 says:

Shouldn’t matter that it’s with a division rival. He’s going to SOME team, so why shouldn’t KC garner a “draft pick profit” out of the deal? Giving up picks also would hurt Denver’s attempts to make other improvements to their team – improvements that they need more than a costly QB prospect. After making a statement with the Cutler trade, why make it appear a blunder by giving up a lot for a replacement, when the deal for Orton was very cheap?

Heck, Denver prob’ly needs 2nd-rounders more than 1st-rounders, anyway. Good year for stocking-up on 2nd- and 3rd-round prospects, if you have the picks. Anyway, I kinda doubt McDaniels would want such a trade. If he DOES, then it suggests that the Cutler trade was sheer mismgmt of his people. Yeah, Cutler’s kind of a young punk, but a good coach would snap him right outta that.

  21. SDChief says:

This is off subject, but its information missed on other sites

TONY G WENT TO UCLA, over at AP, they list a previous kc coach as a link, its frank gansz jr the ex special teams coach, family friend, and hes the one Tony is close to at UCLA, among others, just to point out frank is the ST coach there and has been under Neuheisel after being with Rick in Baltimore.

  22. dbk301 says:

    SDChief,

What are you talking about? Your post doesn’t make any sense. I don’t get what point you are trying to make with it. BTW, Tony G didn’t go to UCLA, he went to CAL.
