Chiefs Sign Mike Goff

by Breaking News

goffThe Kansas City Star is reporting that we have signed ex-Chargers C/G Mike Goff. Goff should be a day-one starter for the Chiefs, presumably taking over at either center for Rudy Niswanger or at the vacated right guard spot. Goff has started every game over the past half-decade for the Chargers, and brings the same type of veteran leadership to the locker room as recent additions Bobby Engram and Mike Vrabel.

Maybe the most overlooked aspect of this signing is how well Goff knows the Bolts offense. That could come in handy considering we have a new defensive coaching staff that needs to get caught up to speed on our divisional foes. Additionally, I think the Chargers would have liked to have kept Goff. I think franchising Darren Sproles along with the LaDainian Tomlinson contract situation made Goff a luxury they could no longer afford. Sucks for them, but their loss is our gain.

This is a big signing for the Chiefs that takes some of the draft-weekend focus away from the offensive line. That could allow us to  both address more glaring holes (pass rush) or go best player available (Aaron Curry, Michael Crabtree). This also reveals that Scott Pioli indeed thought we went too young too fast the past few years. Let’s welcome the big man to Kansas City! Somebody get the man a slab of Jack Stack ribs on the double.

Addicts, sound off on the addition of Mike Goff!

He was horrible last year and appears to be on his last legs. At least we didn't shell out ridiculous money like we did for a similar done vet in McIntosh. Hopefully a younger player will be given the opportunity to battle him for the job and will win it. I can't believe so many fans are in favor of bringing in old vets like this after our recent experiences with Ty Law, Donnie, McIntosh, etc.

Making the O-Line solid thru free agency...Wow! What a novel Idea!

Niswanger is very, very smart. He can study to be a medical doctor when he is done playing. I would love to see him make himself into a good player. He has the brains for it.

I heard Niswanger is really smart, not good, but smart. Anyone know for sure?

With these guys that we have added through free agency/trades i really hope they are the type that is willing to teach/mentor a young man

Id imagine Vrabel can help our 'backers, I still think Johnson has tons of potential.
Engram will hopefully get Bowe to that next level.
And lets hope Goff is willing to do the same for our lineman.

We also need a Ray Lewis type guy on our defense(Vrabel??) that will hold everybody accountable for their jobs and get in their faces. Something i think we've missed for sometime.

FINALLY something exciting. Matty C.? Meh. Good season on a great team. Time will tell if he was a one hit wonder. Vrabel? Meh. If this were 5 years ago, I'd be hella excited, I love Vrabel as a player. But he IS long in the tooth. Engram.. Copper.. Meh. Goff.. Now that is exciting. He's getting up there in age as well, but the shelf-life on linemen tends to be better than skill positions. In addition I think Niswanger would be better at RG than at Center, allowing Goff (who's more intelligent, anyway,) to fill the Center gap.

Also, on the Herb Taylor subject; Herb Taylor has filled in, the past two seasons, very admirably at LT. On the right side of the line, not so much. Can we say false-freakin-starts? I dunno what it is about the right side of the line, but Herb Taylor just can't hack it. But as a backup LT, I'm confident that that's his bread and butter. Either way, even if we have to go Barry Richardson style at RT, it's an upgrade over Damien Mc-please-come-sack-my-QB-Intosh. And even Niswanger would be better than Jones.
To think that Adrian Jones and Damien McIntosh won't be giving up play after play.. is EXCITING. Finally.

Read an article that had goff possibly playing center??? Has he played center before. But if i remember right i read it on ESPN so take it for what its worth.

I think that Rudy is much more fit to play guard but I honestly believe that since he is not very expensive that one reason they kept him is for depth, if he doesn't start. Think about it....
Having Herb Taylor and/or D-Mac as backup tackles would actually be great depth, and having Rudy to back up Goff at RG or C would also be great depth,
To me the line is solid on the left side but still has big holes

LT-Albert
LG-Waters
C- ?
RG Goff
RT-?

I think that the needs for the draft are

Pass rusher and or Linebacker
Center
RT
WR

in no real particular order, meaning that If the best player available is a WR than we take him, but i honestly believe that Lineback will be in the first round

"I would bring in Pace on a one year deal, unless we draft an OT. Pace would give leadership and teach Albert and Taylor."

Agreed- so what if he gets hurt halfway in, his experience will do nothing but help our young guys should he be that type of player...lets just hope guys like Vrabel and maybe Pace don't mail it in this year.

As far as Rudy, he is a backup guy period. As bad as he sucks, he now has experience, which a lot of backups don't have. The center position is very important on an offense, he is the captain of the line. This draft is rich in centers, so I would almost bet the farm that we take a center somewhere.
I would prefer getting some extra picks and taking Mack or Unger.

I would bring in Pace on a one year deal, unless we draft an OT. Pace would give leadership and teach Albert and Taylor. I like Taylor, and think that one day he may take Waters/Goff spot at G.

Well according to this, Goff would ideally be a backup. He is 33. Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure we got half or more of our sacks against the Chargers last year.

I thought Taylor should have taken over D-Mac's position last year when Albert came back. I think I cussed at D-Mac more than any other Chief last year.

On the "Bolts from the Blue" blog there is a detailed post about the Charger O line play in 08 written by one of their editors obviousman. He evaluated tapes from the last 4 games of the season and determined, in his opinion, that Goff was awful in those games and didn't seem to have the legs for it anymore.

I hope he's wrong cuz we don't need anymore rain on our parade.

I'm buying into Taylor more than I am Niswanger. Rudy Niswanger is turrible, as Charles Barkley would say.

IS Herb Taylor still on the roster? He filled in for Albert while he was injured and played pretty well. I think he could be a good RT. Any thoughts?

Zman,

I agree with you, can't believe no one wanted this guy. I believe I read earlier he hasn't missed a start since 2002, so I don't think he has any injuries. Best FA we've got this year, by far.

102,

I'd be surprised if we drafted a center. Whey retain Rudy just to turn around and draft a guy to take his position? I don't think I want anything to do with Pace. The guy can't stay healthy. I'm assuming that most teams must be worried about that as well considering he still hasn't signed.

Bring on the Pace!

We might actually have a "serviceable" line for a bit!

I honestly cant believe he was around this long. Does he have any medical concerns that im not aware of??? He always seemed like a good player its hard for me to believe no other teams looked at him? Either way he has to be an improvement

I love the recent focus on veterans!

Great signing!!! I think we should still be in the market for a RT. Draft a center.

LT Alberts
LG Waters
C Draftee
RG Goff
RT FA- Pace

This is an excellent pickup. If they feel Niswager is an adequate holdover from the Harm era at C, he can instantly fill the Will Shields size hole at RG that was left when he retired. Not that he will be as good, but he certainly will be better than Adrian Jones. If they feel Niswager is expendable, then he's our new center. Either way, its always good to get a good player from a division rival.

I happen to agree with Adam about drafting tackles this high. Tackles drafted later usually fare pretty well in comparison and cost much less.

Now all thats left to do is draft Crabtree and get another offensive tackle and this offense is looking pretty good.

After reading a little bit about him, people say he is a solid player who works his butt off.

Could we ask for anymore? This helps the line out a lot.

I like how he was in about a week or so ago, and we took our time in signing him. Since I do not beleive he visited other teams, we must have gotten him pretty cheap.

Go Chiefs!

Now we need a good RT and we are set to protect MC all year long. Take Aaron Curry #3 and get a good RT with our 3rd rounder.

Cool. This could be a great signing for us in the very near future.
