Lions to Draft Jason Smith With No. 1 Pick?

by Draft

Update 11:45 PM: PFT doesn’t think this is a done deal at all.

Our good friends over at Arrowhead Pride are reporting, via KFFL, that the Lions will select Jason Smith first overall in next month’s NFL Draft. From KFFL:

Lions | To take J. Smith with first pick?
Sun, 22 Mar 2009 18:38:30 -0700

KFFL has learned the Detroit Lions will take Baylor OT Jason Smith with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.

If this is true, my guess is that the Lions are going the cheap route. After all, the Ford family can’t exactly throw around the cash it used to. Meanwhile, Smith probably settled on a much smaller deal than either Aaron Curry or Matt Stafford would have in order to be the No. 1 overall pick. And why not? After all, houses in Detroit are going for a used waffle maker and a bagful of Camel points.

What does this mean for the Chiefs? Curry? Maybe. It could also increase the likelihood of a trade down, as teams more than likely are going to be interested in trading up for Matt Stafford. Remember, the first quarterback went at No. 3 last year. It does look almost for certain that both Curry and Michael Crabtree will be on the board when our Chiefs pick, not to mention Brian Orakpo and Everette Brown as well. So, let the debate rage on…

If the first two picks are indeed Smith and Eugene Monroe, who should the Chiefs select third?

Espn is reporting a possible, yes "possible," 3 way trade between Denver, Cleveland, and Detroit. With presumably either Cutler going to Cleveland or Detroit, and Quinn going to either Denver or Detroit. But this changes into a new 3 teams every other hour so who really knows?

I thought it sounded absurd, but if say the rumor is true and Detroit is selecting Smith with their number one (which I don't know how that would work if they expect to land Cutler OR Quinn), is there some degree of validity to this presumed proposal?

As far as the Chiefs go, I know Adam posted an article about a possible trade with the Eagles who have two late 1st rounders. They have 12 picks over-all in this draft and McNabb paired with Crabtree and Westbrook would make for a fanasy team in a league of it's own.

If that happened maybe we could make a play for Laurinaitis, Cushing, or English, along with picking up either a DE or OL. Regardless, I don't believe the Chiefs will keep the #3 pick. Not as long as Pioli can get more out of it.

Rogers would be an insane pick up, if only if only...GO CHIEFS!

I've also read reports saying that the Lions will be drafting one of the two top quarterbacks. It is too early to tell anything.

Our LBs can tackle? What film are you watching? We didn't have a LB or safety that could tackle for beans on the field last year. See our run D stats, and watch the horrific replays. Priority order:

1. Stop the run
2. Give QB no time
3. Give QB no one to throw to
4. Score 20 Pts per game on D.
5. Dump gatorade on Haley

The problem is that we don't have great, let alone good tackles with our line backers, and that is critical. Stopping the run is one of the most important things you can do in football. All the great defences have great linebackers.

I think the only 2 safe picks are Orakpo and Crabtree. Both will solidify there side of the ball. Our offense would have LJ, Bowe, Tony, Bradley, Crabtree, Charles, Cassel. SICK. Defense would have Vrabel, DJ, Williams, Dorsey, Hali, Orakpo our front three are all first rounders. SICK.

If we where to add curry to out LB it would make no since at all. All he offers is great speed and tackles we have that already with our LBS and that will still leave us with no Sacks at the DE.

best case scenario
we trade our 3rd overall to browns for thier 5th and pick up shaun rogers.
then it goes
1.lions-jason smith
2.rams-monroe
3.browns(trade to a qb needy team)Stafford
4.Seahawks-raji or crabtree
5.chiefs-Curry
If curry isnt there at 5 then maybe orakpo or brown

Crabtree is the way to go. The Chiefs need another receiver to prevent the double teams on Bowe. Cassel will have plenty of options to throw to. The Defense can be addressed in later rounds, after all Jared Allen was a 4th round pick.

Go watch some highlight film of Everette Brown and you just might want him over Curry. I did and he is very "Impressive".
