AA Reader Mock Draft: Rams Nab Smith, Chiefs Up!

Draft Results:
1. Detroit Lions – QB Matthew Stafford, Georgia
2. St. Louis Rams – OT Jason Smith, Baylor
Your Kansas City Chiefs are now on the clock! Comment on who you think the Chiefs should select with the third pick and why. Be convincing — you could sway some votes.
Who should our Chiefs pick with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft?

With the 3rd pick in 2009 NFL draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select……EUGENE MONROE, offensive tackle, University of Virginia.
I’m glad he fell into our laps, now he’s teamed backup with Albert who can then be moved over to RT. No Curry, No Crabtree. Football is won & lost in the trenches!
March 13th, 2009 at 2:42 pmChiefs draft LB Aaron Curry.
I know this might not be the most popular pick based on the fact that we picked up Vrabel and lots of people want another OL, but I think combining someone with Curry’s skill and work ethic with a phenomenal teacher and motivator like Vrabel will turn this kid into a future superstar. Hey who knows, drafting Curry might help push DJ to reach his potential as well. I think Jason Smith is a significantly better pick than Monroe, if he was available it would be tougher, but I’d still select Curry.
March 13th, 2009 at 2:44 pmBest defender on the board, Aaron Curry, LB. We need an impact player on D badly.
March 13th, 2009 at 2:47 pmI agree with Curry. He has all the skills. I believe we have some existing talent that hasn’t even been discovered on both offense and defense.
March 13th, 2009 at 2:48 pmI’d be happy with Curry or Crabtree but i’d lean towards Crabtree.
-Though Curry seems to be the consensus safe smart pick, an Elite WR > an Elite LB, and while they both might end up being above average at best both players have the potential to be great. Crabtree seems to lack speed but he absolutely shows up in games and is a game changer. Though our defense needs help i think Crabtree makes our offense extremely dangerous.
Having said that
Chiefs select Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest:
March 13th, 2009 at 3:02 pm-Just seems to add up too well, seems to be a rare talent and he upgrades the LB unit which really is in need of some help. Curry looks to have a good work ethic and — like crabtree — also appears to be a game changer in games.
With the 3rd Pick in the NFL Draft the Kansas City Chiefs select Michael Crabtree WR Texas Tech.
March 13th, 2009 at 3:16 pmI realize most mock drafts have Curry going at this spot but the Chiefs just got Vrabel and are set at LB. The other logical choice would be a defensive end but there really isn’t one worth taking at the 3rd spot and can be addressed in the 3rd round. Haley and Pioli both know you need a solid one and two receiver to run this offense (Boldin & Fitzgerald) (Moss & Welker) and Crabtree would make a great number 2 receiver that would help spread the field, prevent double teams on bowe and give Cassel another option.
At the last minute, KC trades out the #3 pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars !!!!!! The Jags jump ahed of Seattle and the Faiders to select Michael Crabtree.. KC changes places with Jacksonville in the first round and picks up their 2nd and 4th Rd picks.
But if not KC select LB Aaron Curry, A true game changer on Defense. The best defensive player in the draft to shore up one of leagues worst defenses and last place pass rush. Curry will make an immediate impact on the field and will be elevated to the truly elite under the tutelage of DJ and Vrabel.
March 13th, 2009 at 3:21 pmNo trades, remember
March 13th, 2009 at 3:26 pmAdam:
Did you record a Curry vote for Gump?
March 13th, 2009 at 3:30 pmTwo things: 1. Torry Holt was released
March 13th, 2009 at 3:31 pm2. Clancy Pendergast was named DC
Ah, and we signed LB Corey Mays
March 13th, 2009 at 3:33 pmI remember Pioli saying that his job is to get players for Haley so the Crabtree pick wouldnt surprise me but i think that was just for show. Pioli is the man and he is taking Curry.
#3 overall pick is Arron Curry. LB’s are set!!!
March 13th, 2009 at 3:38 pmFilling our biggest need and also taking the best player available and #1 on most boards, the Chiefs gotta go with Aaron Curry. DJ, Vrable, and Curry all bring something completly different to the table. I think they will complement each other well and make each other better players. One of our biggest weaknesses could soon become a strength.
March 13th, 2009 at 3:59 pmThis is tough for me. I like Curry just like everyone else, but I don’t think he’ll provide the pass rush we need. However, I think Brian Orakpo could. He can play DE or LB, and (in my opinion) would be a MUCH better pass rusher. Don’t get me wrong, I would be estatic if we select Curry, but I’d pass on him.
One thing I do know, Michael Crabtree would be an absolute wasted pick. I can’t even fathom us taking a WR at #3 with the holes we have. Makes my stomach turn.
So, with the third overall pick in the 2009 NFL draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select… Brian Orakpo, DE/LB, Texas.
March 13th, 2009 at 4:03 pmWell since I am of the understanding that this is a matter of who we think would be best and not who we think will be picked I will make my selection thusly…
“With the uhhhh 3rd pick of the 2009 NFL Draft….The Kansas City Chiefs select….
…Eugene Monroe, Offensive Lineman, Virginia”
I have seen too many times when a team invests huge amounts at QB and then let him get eaten alive…Do not let the Arrowspread fool you, our O-Line sucks, badly…With this pick the tackle position is solidified for years, revitalize LJ, protect Cassel.
This is not the glamorous pick but I think it holds more value than Curry for two reasons. One, as Adam points out often, the offense is closer than the defense but not quite there yet. I do think it is important to solidify at LEAST one side of the ball before this season; if we take Curry both sides remain average, if we take Monroe our offense could be top 10. The second reason is impact linebackers are much much easier to come across in other ways. Tackle is not…
With that said, I would not be pissed at all if we DO take curry…Here is a great quote from Don Banks today:
“The Chiefs can’t possibly miss in this slot. If the Lions go quarterback at the top, K.C. will have their pick between Curry, the draft’s cleanest prospect, and one of the top two offensive tackles. If Detroit goes for Curry, the Chiefs still get the tackle they need in either Smith or Monroe. And if the Lions and Rams both go offensive tackle, Kansas City winds up with the defensive play-maker it lacks in Curry.”
March 13th, 2009 at 4:25 pmIf Curry is still there I think thats who ya take ,However Monroe would be just about as good of a pick
March 13th, 2009 at 4:28 pm447,
You aren’t the only one that will have a post nobody might be inclined to agree with. I like Orakpo, but I still think if we go that route, we should take……….With the #3 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs pick Everett Brown, DE, Florida State.
According to the reports I read two months ago he is slated to be another Jared Allen. I have not heard anything negative since.
March 13th, 2009 at 4:33 pmTo be honest I would love any of these four:
Orakpo, Crabtree, Monroe, Curry
but…
With the third pick in the 2009 NFL draft the Chiefs pick, Michael Crabtree.
I just can’t justify picking Monroe when we just took Albert and are paying him LT money. Orakpo is good, but not this high. Curry I am just not sold on and I think some of these other low-end LB signings we have made will be sufice.
March 13th, 2009 at 4:40 pmArron Curry!
March 13th, 2009 at 4:44 pmThe D needs to much work even with Mays signing
“With the third pick in the 2009 nfl draft the Kansas City Chiefs select WR Michael Crabtree”.
Pioli loves offense. The New England Patriots had some good defenses, but they had better offenses. That being said: Dwayne Bowe, Tony G, and Crabtree give the comfort food Haley needs to suceed. Cassel needs to suceed too. I almost went with Monroe (OT)on this one for the same reasons, but you simply CANNOT ignore Crabtree’s production. Our defense will be built in the later rounds and in later years.
GO CHIEFS!
March 13th, 2009 at 4:47 pmIm going with Curry. We need a playmaker on the D and i think he can be that man. He was the most impressive player at the combine and i just don’t think we can pass on him.
March 13th, 2009 at 4:51 pmJason Taylor FA at DE. (just a thought)
March 13th, 2009 at 4:54 pm1. Kahlif Barnes 2. Jason Taylor 3. Aaron Curry
March 13th, 2009 at 4:59 pmRemember Vernon Gholston’s performance at last years combine, numbers don’t mean everything.
March 13th, 2009 at 4:59 pmIf we are going to run a 3-4 defense we have to get a real ” nose tackle ” and that 6-2 337 lbs. beast is B.J. Raji from Boston College.
March 13th, 2009 at 5:16 pmI do not think we will take crabtree…he lacks in speed already and now with the foot surgery, hes even slower. We need a speed man opposite to Bowe and taking crabtree will be a wasted pick. I do not want us to throw the high pick away like we have in previous years.
With that said i think we will draft Brian Orakpo, he could play LB or DE..he could even maybe switch up between both in rotations. Dont get me wrong i would love to draft Curry, but i have a gut feeling in Orakpo. Either way…Curry or Orakpo will help our defense 100%.
March 13th, 2009 at 5:24 pmCurry.
March 13th, 2009 at 5:42 pmCurry
March 13th, 2009 at 6:08 pmTo shines: Fewer people are regarding Raji’s best use as being a NT scouts are saying he is built to be more than a clogger…
Also to meide: Albert is being paid as the 15th overall pick last year, it is in no way unreasonable money for a RT.
March 13th, 2009 at 6:18 pmI would love to have Curry. But honestly I would rather trade down and get Rey Rey out of USC.
BUT since we can’t trade.
Eugene Monroe OT
Bookend tackles for years to come.
March 13th, 2009 at 6:57 pmFirst Pick has to be Curry. He is too good an athlete and way to good a tackler. Our biggest problem on D last year was missed tackles.
For all the people who want munroe, which is fine by me. What we would do is draft him as our new LT and move albert back to his original position of LG. They played like that in V-Tech. Move Waters to RG or trade him, whatever works. Munroe, Albert, Wade, Waters, Taylor sounds like a good line.
March 13th, 2009 at 6:59 pmMeide,
Dont forget that Gholston was a project pick that had “motor” concerns coming out.
Curry is the TOTAL package. His sacks may not be high but his tackles for loss are. Curry has speed to keep up with the likes of Gates, Scheffler and he does have the burst and strength to get to the QB and most importantly he is a sure tackler.
March 13th, 2009 at 7:24 pmIts good either way…but in all honestly the chiefs have to get Curry. For those that say we have Vrabel and gang so why do we need another linebacker this is why
1. Pioli is going for depth and hearty competition.
March 13th, 2009 at 7:47 pm2. Pioli has stated that his mindset is not on being a one year wonder but maintaining a level of excellence for years to come. Vrabel as good as he is only has so much left now is the time to transisiton in an anchor for the d for years to come.
3. Curry is “that deal”
Everet Brown. Offense was not that bad. Defense needs to get QB. Brown is the answer.
March 13th, 2009 at 8:00 pmIf I had the choice, and since Jason Smith is off the board in Suck-Town-Luis, Eugene Monroe would be the guy. I am not opposed to Curry, or Crabtree. Either would make significant impacts right away. But since this is our chance to speak out and say what we would do, I would take Monroe. Our O-line would be terrific with two former, very well experienced players back together on the line. We would reap the benefits for years to come.
Eugene Monroe, 3 overall pick
March 13th, 2009 at 8:34 pmCurry is the best defensive player in the draft and since the Chiefs had a hard time stopping sneeze last year that’s where I think they’ll go. Although, Monroe is a very interesting pick, I think the defense needs more immediate help.
Personally, I hope they trade this pick and aquire more draft picks…we need all the help we can get.
#3 pick is Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest
March 13th, 2009 at 8:49 pmAs pretty much everyone knows by now, I advocated Aaron Curry long before it was cool. Obviously my choice is …
the chiefs are moving to 3-4 and every great 3-4 features a dominating nose tackle thus I must go with . . .
BJ Raji
You read it here first.
March 13th, 2009 at 8:49 pmI would like to see the chiefs pickup with the #3 pick Brian Orakpo or BJ Raji. Orakpo is very strong and fast. Watch him on “ESPNS Profile of Orakpo” on UTUBE. He is crazy and a freak. I like it. Raji and Dorsey I like that idea also. Orakpo has a great work ethic on and off the field.
March 13th, 2009 at 9:15 pmWhen the blogs are counted tomarrow Curry will be our pick. I used to have him going here after talking it over with merlin a few times; however it doesn’t make any sense now. We have Derrick Johnson who averages 90tackls, 3sacks, 1int. per year. Demarrio Williams averages 100 Tackles, 2sacks, 1int. per year, Mike Vrabel averages 76tackles, 6sacks, 1int. per year. That is a strong LB core. PERIOD. With (D1-5) Glenn Dorsey, (D1-20) Tamba Hali and your new Kansas City Chief at (D1-3) Brian Orakpo We will have solidfied our defense. I believe and yes you heard it here the chiefs will have a sack total of 33 if we go with this pick at the end of the 2009 season.
March 13th, 2009 at 10:36 pmDE/LB Orakpo. We need the smart, tough players, remember? Put him in there with Vrabel for some OJT. We set the record for the least sacks. Thats no pressure on opposing QBs. Curry didn’t get that pressure going in college good tackling or not.
Orakpo was all about pressure in the backfield. Playing in a big-time division (Big 12) for a big-time team (Texas) and putting Hiesman trophy candidates on their butts (Bradford and Harrell).
The kind of pass rusher that reminds me of Neil Smith maybe. Opponents would have to put more than a back on him.
The Chiefs #3 Pick is DE/LB Brian Orakpo from Texas.
March 13th, 2009 at 10:48 pmWow Double D not Curry I’m shocked.
You guys made some great arguments for a number of different guys. As I was thinking about who the Chiefs would pick at 3 given this scenario I couldn’t help but think what a great position the Chiefs are in this year. In all seriousness, I’m not sure it matters who we pick assuming that the above options aren’t going to flop of course and yes I realize that is a rather prodigious assumption. Whatever happens, whoever we take, I believe our Chiefs will be better than when they started the day on April 25th.
Lets say we take Curry. We get a stud linebacker and our defense is hypothetically significantly upgraded ober last year. We have another guy that can actually wrap up a tackle and make a good solid defensive play.
Ok we take Crabtree. Again, hypothetically, assuming Cassell isn’t a flash in the pan (I cringe even thinking about it) we suddenly have an elit offense that will be difficult to stop. Bowe, Crabtree, charles, LJ(?), TG and Cottam, maybe Franklin or Bradley as the third receiver and Pigpen running a little wildcat every now and then, that sounds pretty good doesn’t it?
And what if we take one of the best OTs available. That sounds pretty good too. Who said you can’t have two LTs anchoring your line. What if Albert were to get hurt (God forbid), wouldn’t it be nice to know that we have a number of highly competent guys playing on the line that allow us some flexibility?!?
And finally, what if we take Raji, Orakpo, or Everett. We had arguably (and some would say convincingly) the worst line of all time last year. Sure, McShay or Elvis might piss their pants because Pioli “reached” on a guy, how dare he! But the reality is still each of the guys as mentioned above will make our team better.
That my friends is what gets me excited about the draft and this coming football season.
So if you read all that and are just wondering who the heck my pick is, sorry I realize I just wasted a minute of your life you can never have back, so I will make my decision.
Although Pioli wants to go with Monroe because he knows the battle is won in the trenches, his hippocampus and declarative memory trump his gut. He remembers the success he had picking jared mayo last year.
Chiefs take Curry.
March 13th, 2009 at 10:59 pmDD….
You cannot say “You read it here first” when it is stated 12 posts earlier lol….that sir, is against the rules…
March 13th, 2009 at 11:09 pmIf we’re lucky enough to have Curry fall to 3 for us… CURRY ALL THE WAY!
March 14th, 2009 at 12:38 amhttp://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=cr-nextyearscards031109&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
March 14th, 2009 at 12:47 amTrading down is the way to go, however we need a partner. Oakland,Jacksonville,Indy,Dallas are all teams that would want Crabtree. Somehow I would love to get Michael Johnson in the early second
But, per the RULES I will say:
Aaron “in a hurry” Curry from The Wake.
March 14th, 2009 at 1:11 amCurry.
March 14th, 2009 at 3:40 amorakpo, he is a beast among men. everyone talks about the next jared allen, orakpo has allen’s drive to the ball plus he is a beast. anyone who has seen any profiles on this guy would change their minds. I think he could work out as a OLB in a 3-4. Plus did i mention this guys a beast.
March 14th, 2009 at 7:08 amEUGENE MONROE WOULD BE THE SAFEST PICK OR CURRY
March 14th, 2009 at 7:27 amThe obvious pick. CURRY.
March 14th, 2009 at 8:00 amCurry has to be the pick, Corey Mays signing means nothing. He is a roster-filler at best. He had 9 total tackles last year, this is not a guy who is going to be a difference maker for our defense.
March 14th, 2009 at 9:40 amsthall20: If Orakpo is such a “beast”……with such “drive”…..Why did he disappear in so many games…
Raks production consistency (or lack thereof) is best compared to Vernon Gholston…and we all know what that means…
March 14th, 2009 at 10:55 amWOODSTER
March 14th, 2009 at 11:02 amThis team needs a leader, and a guy who can play multiple spots at linebacker…Aaron Curry is the Ray Lewis type in terms of a natural born leader, even better, curry is great in the community, and a face of the defense type.
Curry can play inside or outside in our D, and has shown he can tackle as well as a patrick willis, he hasnt been asked to blitz much, but he has all the ability to do so, and does not have problems taking on blockers.
With the trade of redding for peterson underway, it looks like Stafford/Smith then…In my opinion Curry…And if KC loads up and gets Haggins, maybe they feel they can hold off and take crabtree, I just dont believe it, but it would be better than moving a potential all pro OL to the right side when he dominated the left…
Curry-
March 14th, 2009 at 11:10 amI think it’s interesting that the three top teams are showing their hand. It’s clear that the Chiefs will not be taking a quarterback with the trade for Cassel, it’s clear that the Rams will have to take a tackle since they released Pace, and now it is clear that the Lions won’t be taking Curry after they just traded for Julian Peterson.
As for what the Chiefs should do, I’m going with Curry. We are in desperate need of a quality linebacker especially if we move to the 3-4. I know that we are in desperate need of a lot of things, but I think you take the best player available no matter what, and to me that’s Curry.
March 14th, 2009 at 12:35 pmThe best thing about all of this is that everyone’s pick will make our team better. A good case can be made for any and all of them. What it comes down to is what is our opinion of what is most important to the team.
Monroe.
March 14th, 2009 at 12:44 pmWoody has it on Orakpo. Be careful of the guys that can’t be physically dominant and must try to figure out how to do other things than just manhandle lesser competition. As for Crabtree, well, lets just go get Torry Holt and take Curry.
Curry:
March 14th, 2009 at 12:56 pmAdam you had better recognize that Randy has the Chiefs selecting ME with the 3rd pick of the draft…
Where the heck have you been, Randy? These old people and their careers…pfff
March 14th, 2009 at 12:58 pmI like post #54 by lobo
“The best thing about all of this is that everyone’s pick will make our team better. A good case can be made for any and all of them. What it comes down to is what is our opinion of what is most important to the team.”
I agree with this statement, just not his choice. 9 out of the last 10 games the Chiefs put up at least a decent amount of points. The problem was we couldn’t stop anybody. So the most important to the team is on the defensive side of the ball. To me the best player available on the D is Curry, so that is my choice.
Curry
March 14th, 2009 at 2:06 pmIm right in the middle of my off season Woody, wrangling for good seats, stub hubbing my extra seats already, counting the days until the draft party, working up who Ill take to the games next year!!!
March 14th, 2009 at 6:36 pmThe safe pick is O line, the ballsy pick is Crabtree, but our defense is atrocious.
The gambler in me wants to say Orakpo but I gotta pice up this Indian food with a lil CURRY!
March 14th, 2009 at 7:35 pmCURRY
March 14th, 2009 at 8:39 pmSorry, but we’ve got to ensure Cassel has a good year (and if we keep LJ, then him too, if he’s going to do anything at all this year). Having picked up Vrabel, I gotta go OT – Eugene Monroe is my vote.
March 14th, 2009 at 9:24 pmOrakpo is the pick at #3. The chiefs need someone to help out Dorsey and Hali. Boone and Tank cant do the job. Orakpo just sounds like a pro-bowlers name. Come on guys.
March 14th, 2009 at 9:29 pmcurry
doesn’t anybody else remember the last time we drafted a linebacker derrick thomas.
March 14th, 2009 at 10:17 pmmaybe we will get lucky again
sorry meant to say that high in the first round
March 14th, 2009 at 10:18 pmFrom Freep.com concerning Curry’s workout in Detroit:
Acquiring Peterson appears to end the Lions’ need for drafting an outside linebacker with the top pick. But Curry is considered versatile enough to play in the middle — Lions coach Jim Schwartz has called him “multidimensional” — and widely thought to be the draft’s safest pick.
March 15th, 2009 at 6:05 amIf you can get the best player with the third pick in the draft… why wouldnt you get aarron curry
March 15th, 2009 at 10:48 amIf they don’t trade down, it’s got to be Curry. He’s a game changer and great leader. However, I wouldn’t get upset with Monroe either. We could create a bookend situation that would anchor this line for the next 10 yrs. Curry and DJ could create a powerful mix, and I think Curry provides a huge piece of the puzzle long term.
Ideal: Trade down with CIN/JAC, who want Monroe/Crabtree, and we pick up a 2nd and 4th. We can then take Curry or A Smith. I still think there is a trade possibility with the 49ers too, who could be targeting a QB.
Ideal II: PHI trades for LJ for a 2nd and 5th rd pick, as they have plenty of picks to play with, providing an amazing compliment to Westbrook. With their 2nd rd pick, they trade up to get D Brown from CON.
March 15th, 2009 at 11:51 amCurry, DJ and vrabel leading. i think the chiefs could have on of the best LB cores in the nfl. Plus we set a record for least amount of sacks in a season, and curry would help that out.
CURRY
March 15th, 2009 at 2:32 pmdefense won last years superbowl.
March 15th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
