AA Reader Mock: Lions Pick Stafford, Rams Up

by Chiefs

The Detroit Lions select…

QB Matt Stafford, Georgia

Stafford received more votes than both offensive tackles combined for those of you who were worried about fairness.

Next up is the hated Rams. Comment on who you think the Rams should select with the second pick and why. Be convincing — you could sway some votes.

Who should the Rams pick with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft?

2383 to Saint: Yes that's what I was referring to, people like Mayock, he is more solid than the other two...

To 2383:

Over the last month referred to the period of time people have been intensely covering the draft...it did not imply rising stock solely because of workouts...

Bottomline I think these guys are pretty darned alike...Smith is faster and more athletic so I would love to have him...

Eugene Monroe seems like the better pick to me. He will hold down the left side of the Rams line for the next 10-12 years. He comes from a system that has proven that it developes offensive linemen for the NFL. Smith is much riskier and Monroe moved Albert over, proving there is a temendous amount of talent there. He is can't miss for me.

Are you sure about that? Last time I checked, the votes went 15-14 in favor of Monroe. In particular, note that posts 6 & 16 must be counted as votes in the Monroe column even though those two posters stated they thought that the Rams would ultimately take Smith. I make this distinction because the question asked was not who "will" the Rams take but rather who "should" the Rams take.

So far I have counted 16-14 for Jason Smith. Up to this post.

Woody- you said over the past month. This implies that combine aside, monroe is the better player. Mock drafters go nuts about combine results and so do some tv analysists, but the guys who know better and end up making the end calls always go back to the game tapes. Our guy Pioli has stated this repeatedly.

"With the uhhhh second pick of the 2009 NFL Draft....The St. Louis Rams select.....

....Jason Smith, Offensive Line, Baylor"

Monroe?! Is there ANYONE out there that has had Monroe rated higher for the past month that's opinion is worth a damn?! (The answer is no.)

Smith has everything it takes to be a stud on the line for over a decade...He should be #2.

@Woody
How is your opinion worth more than anyone else's here?

Oh darn, it's not! Just because you decided to be a sheeple and follow doesn't mean Monroe is any worse for wear than Smith. Smith had a good combine and now he's ... oh what's that phrase? ... "Shooting up the draft boards."

Whoop-dee-effing-do. How many prospects have had good combines and shot up draft boards only to fail miserably? They're called work-out warriors.

Reasons already stated above, the Rams pick Monroe.

Rams take the second coming of Orlando Pace......Eugene Monroe.

Jason Smith. I could see them doing anything though really. They always manage to screw us in the draft somehow so hopefully they will take Smith.

No doubt they take an OL as everyone is pointing out so I'll vote for Jason Smith simply because the guy looks like he could eat Dwight Freeney whole.

it sure is a tight race between Smith and Monroe

Jason Smith. Then Pioli is on the clock!!

I'm new to this site, but I've enjoyed reading the columns and comments posted on here for months. You guys never disappoint...except for the left field "Chiefs no more" bit!

I agree with Z and Slack J. Monroe is their guy if his knees check out. He's the complete package and as much as I would love to see him paired back with Albert again, I think he'll be off the board.

With the 2nd Pick in the Draft the St. Louis Rams Select Jason Smith OT Baylor. With Pace gone the Rams will need help on the Offensive Line and a good blocker for Stephen Jackson.

39- For the record, I don't think woody was saying that he thought HIS opinion was better than anyone elses. I think he was refering to guys like kiper and mcshay and other draft followers who have a resume to back up their opinions.

As long as they feel that Monroes supposed knee issues are a none issue they select him....else if their afraid its a real issue i could see them going for either of the Smiths, yes even Andre if does well on his pro day. Doesnt he just remind you of Orlando.

In the end id put my money on Monroe....Chiefs are on the Clock

I`m thinking it will be Monroe. The guy is darn near can`t miss....

It's between Eugene Monroe and Jason Smith. With the rumors of Monroe's knees being bad, the pick is...

Jason Smith OT Baylor.

I had something like 16-9 for Stafford, so he definitely was the pick.

Eugene Monroe

Rams need a franchise tackle to replace Orlando Pace. Monroe beat out Brandon Albert in Virginia for the LT position and Albert is an exceptionally talented NFL tackle. That only proves how good Eugene is.

With Detroit taking a QB, the Rams get the best O lineman in Baylors Jason Smith. They need him to replace Pace.

Rams take Smith

2383-

Just read today that that the scouts were so unhappy with his Pro Day workout that he is dropping. I don't see him dropping past San Diego where he would be a RT in a running attack. Time will tell.

BTW, I swear I counted more Jason Smith votes than Stafford, but whatever. I don't think they take him honestly.

Yeah, after the release of Pace this is a no-brainer IMO. With the second pick in the 2009 NFL draft the St. Louis Rams select-Eugene Monroe, LT, Virginia.

BTW, should we be looking at Pace as our RT, L/R G or Center? Would he be worth the cost?

The Rams need a LT badly. It's Jason Smith or Monroe, whoever they like better. I'll come down again for Jason Smith.

15- Andre Smith is falling, true. Nothing but a RT, wrong. Because the guy has made some questionable choices does not mean he is better suited for a lesser position. Infact, personallity issues aside, he is arguably the best LT in this draft. I believe he will still be off the board in the top 10 and teams don't pick RT's in the top ten.

Whoever mentioned that our Linebacking core was strong needs to give their head a shake.

Monroe is better, but the hype machine that is the combine may say otherwise. I'd go Monroe, but the rams go Jason Smith.

Rams take Monroe...

They are in need of a LT and Monroe will give them much more in run blocking then J Smith. You don't think Jackson is in someones ear. I think they gamble on the knee and go with the best LT if not the most athletic.

A Smith is falling down draft boards and is nothing more than a RT at best, and maybe even a 2nd roundre.

I keep seeing Monroe beat out Albert for LT at Va. Is that true or were they really close and Brandon was a better guard? Gotta work the whole line fellas. I'd give up just a smidge at LT in college to move my LT to a stud guard and solidify my entire line.

#2 St Louis - Jason Smith LT (Baylor), they released Orlando Pace earlier this week and know what a good LT means. Monroe is also a possibility but Smith just keeps moving up everybody's board.

Im going to say Monroe for the reason that they desperately need a starting quality left tackle, heck they need both sides so this is a no brainer. For why Monroe over the Smiths, please see #9. Great job DD. Also Andre Smith had a terrible pro day, so I see him falling a bit.

St.Louis Rams select: Jason Smith, OT, Baylor
Smith tested out better than Monroe at the combine, and on paper looks to be the best OT in the draft. I think he'll get the nod here to become the new Orlando Pace.

Top 4 reasons why Monroe is a better LT prospect than Jason Smith:

1. He beat out Branden Albert for the LT job at Virginia.
2. He is more experienced.
3. He has proven himself to be a consistently high performer every year as a starter.
4. Reasons 1-3 point to him having an almost negligible bust quotient.

Eugene. More experience. Beat out Albert and look how he did last year.

Lets think about the chiefs for a minute. We have Derrick Johnson Averages 90tckls, 3sacks, 1int. per year. Demarrio Williams Averages 100 Tackles, 2sacks, 1int. per year, Mike Vrabel averages 76tackles, 6sacks, 1int. per year. That is a strong LB core. PERIOD. Our FS and SS is Off the charts and possible Pro Bowlers. Our Rookie CB are doing really good. So we have a first rounder in Tamba Hali, Another first rounder in Glenn Dorsey and unproven Tank Tyler. We need more then anything someone to get to the QB we could get this by DE or LB They say Aaron Curry is the safest pick I would have to agree as far as defense; however we do have Brian Orakpo who is the Sack king in College and is 265lbs of pure muscle and he is fast. So I would say we need Brian Orakpo #3 to the KC Chiefs now I know everyone is going to disagree but if we stay 4-3 we don't need anymore LB.

I'd say position is obvious here, especially with the release of Mr. Pace. They took him with the second overall pick and they'll take another LT with the second overall pick once again. The question is who?

Personally I like Eugene Monroe (especially for the Chiefs because of his experience of playing with Albert), but I think the Rams will take Jason Smith from Baylor.

With the 2nd pick in the 2009 NFL draft the St.Louis Rams pick..... Jason Smith OT Baylor.

Smith has great feet and out standing movement. A great replacement for Orlando Pace, and a great way to establish an Offensive frontline.

I think this years top five are pretty simple. #1 is Jason Smith or Andre Smtih. With orlando Pace gone they need someone to replace him so I'm going with Andre Smith. Smith is a lineman that has the ability to dominate on every snap. He is a good natural athlete, and is light on his feet for a lineman that could tip the scales at 350lbs after dinner. Smith sets up well in pass protection and does a good job shuffling his feet laterally to keep the defender at bay. He is very powerful at the point of attack and can simply man handle college lineman, opening up a lot of running room on his side of the field. Smith has the natural athleticism and strength to play any spot on the offensive line, outside of the center position.won the Outland Trophy, earned All SEC honors, and was a unanimous All American. These guys will fight over First if one doesn't go first then he will go second.

Eugene Monroe -
He beat out Albert to play LT at Virginia, we know how well Branden has done for us, so how good can this guy be? The Rams will find out.

The Rams wanted Jake Long last year. Now with Orlando Pace officially released, it could not be more clear what they intend to do with the #2 pick. They will most definitely take the best Left Tackle least likely to bust. For my money, that has to be Eugene Monroe.

Looks like I get to kick this one off...

With the 2nd pick in the NFL draft the St. Louis Rams select...

Jason Smith. They have a real need for an athletic LT to replace Pace. He could hold that side down for years to come.

To bad for the Chiefs because I think he would be a nice addition to our line as well. Thankfully Curry is still on the board.
