Chiefs No More

AUTHOR: this old chief | IN: Chiefs | COMMENTS: 42 Comments |

Now that we are past the first 50 days of his Presidency, Mr. Obama and Mrs. Pelosi can reflect on their accomplishments and focus on future targets for change. Among these are the BCS system and the inappropriate use of mascots.

Mascots? Yes, mascots!

Since Mr. Obama is our first minority President, he should be appalled by the use of certain mascot names. But in reality this fight began long ago. In the 1960’s, the National Congress of American Indians focused on the negative images of Native Americans in cartoons, costumes and mascots. Their efforts did not come to fruition until this century when the NCAA banned the use of Indian names in any NCAA-sponsored tournaments or championships. As a result, Marquette University changed mascots from Warriors to Golden Eagles; St. John’s University dropped the Redmen and became the Red Storm. Likewise, SEMO and Arkansas State dropped their Indian names. The University of Illinois retired Chief Illiniwek, and many other teams revised their mascots names for political correctness.

But what about the Chiefs? The Red-skins? Can you imagine people mocking African-Americans in black face paint at a game? Yet we go to Chiefs games and you will see fans with warpaint, chicken feather headdresses and tomahawks doing the chop. Isn’t this all making a mockery of our Native American heritage?

Please, President Obama, please, forget about the economy, the War in Iraq, the failures of our school system and stem cell research, and get onto the important Issues — like political correctness of our professional sporting teams!!!! That’s change we can believe in. I’ll even get that change started; I’m no longer The Old Chief — I’m now The Old Human Being!

What should the Chiefs new name be? Red Wave? Wolfpack? Fountains? Sirloins? Chefs? Let me know.

Oddly enough the Chiefs were not named after Native Americans. My understanding is they were named after “Chief” Barttle, who I think was the Police Chief.

Disclaimer: The views expressed by this former A.A. writer do not represent the views of the rest of the Arrowhead Addict staff, FanSided LLC and especially the Best Bros. That is why This Old Chief is now hanging out with Emmitt Smiff in the unemployed sports personality line. How’s that for change?

  3. woody says:

Yes…I echo what 102 said…that since we are in fact not named originally after Native Americans I think we would be able to keep it….But if they were forced to switch I have no idea what name I would prefer…I am very much not creative in that way lol…

  4. Rihavens says:

Did I miss something here? What is all this about?

  5. brandon181062 says:

Why don’t you go root for another team and get the hell off this site. Change the Chiefs name fuck off

  6. woody says:

I believe “brandon181062″ gets the “Not Able To Recognize Satire Award”

    ….at least half-satire…

  7. Rihavens says:

Then again, if “Chiefs” is too offensive, I say we go for something more offensive so we can keep out name, like “The Rapists,” “Nazis,” Or “The Broncos”

  8. WtexKC says:

Ok, i haven’t been visiting this site for long and so far i’ve enjoyed the reading and good comments. But, this post is ridiculous, please tell me this jack ass is done posting this political bullshit when our “CHIEFS” are in the middle of free agency and trying to rebuild our team, give me a break

  9. doc says:

Hey you guys need to settle down no need for language like that around here. geez. It’s funny… you know FU-NNY, funny. If you can’t handle it go back where you came from we don’t need comments like those around here.

In recognition of everything our Congress has accomplished so far though, maybe we could change our name to the BBQ pork-barrelers!

    Go Chiefs!

  10. KCFan_SanDiego says:

As long as before the name goes “Winners of the AFC West”, I don’t really care what name they go by, they’ll still be Chiefs in my heart. Red and Gold for life!

  11. CHIEFS FAN IN CT says:

This post is unnecessary bullshit propaganda. I’m disappointed it was allowed to be posted. If I want to read crap like that I’ll go read some liberal rag somewhere.

  12. Double D says:

    And proceeded to lie

  13. Merlin says:

Another fine example of Poe’s law.

  14. baldy says:

I can kindof see how redskins could be offensive but Chiefs? I dont get it.

  15. sthall20 says:

What is the deal with the indians being all upset about sports teams using some form or their heritage as a mascot. I live in North Dakota and the two sports teams I follow are both named after indians. The UND Sioux hockey team has pretty much put ND on the map in any college sport and now this, be satire or not, is just assinine. The indians in my opinion should worry more about the image they put out on themselves and not so much whether an athletic team is using them as a mascot.

  16. the hammer formerly known as g.l. says:

Well, if everybody could just relax, take a blood pressure pill, and settle those blood vessels down in the side of your head……….

I get it. But, you know, if push came to shove and the Chiefs ever did change their name because of political correctness, the answer is simple. The name could be changed to the Kansas City Arrows. Arrows is a non racial, non stereotypical term. Many cultures have utilized the arrow from the ancient Egyptians, Mesopotamians, Celts, Vikings, Franks, Goths, and Chinese, to native Americans. The name of the stadium, logo, helmets, everything could be retained. Problem solved. Next Question.

  17. Boooooooooo this article!!!!!!!!

CHIEFS Forever. There is nothing racially insensitive about the term/name Chiefs.

In reference to the native american culture it would be akin to our american terms for General, Colonel, Commander, etc.

There is noting un-PC about the Chiefs!!!

  18. the hammer formerly known as g.l. says:

Hey, Jeremy, just think about all the people with Chiefs tattoos if that happened.

  19. Vrod74-MikeSD says:

WOW! Some of you need to SERIOUSLY look up the word SARCASM in a dictionary. As for the change of name. Won’t happen. The Chiefs are named for former Kansas City Mayor Harold Roe Bennett Sturdevant Bartle, who got the nickname “The Chief” from his work with Native Americans in Wyoming. They gave Mayor Bartle the nickname, he lured the Houston Texans to KC and Lamar like the man and his nickname so much he renamed the Texans to the Chiefs. SO ENDETH THE LESSON!!!!

  20. Vrod74-MikeSD says:

Anyone wanting to know more about the man the Chiefs were named for should check out this wikipedia link:

  21. KCFaninATL says:

I dont even like to joke about the government being involved in football. In any way. That shit is not funny.

Anything the government touches becomes a useless joke, I would prefer that not to happen to this sport.

I know it wasnt serious, hopefully, but still not even a good thing to ponder.

  22. the hammer formerly known as g.l. says:

How about the Kansas City Bureaucrats? We could have a stapler on our helmets.

  23. the hammer formerly known as g.l. says:

Now before anyone jumps on me, I am just kidding. Joking around if you will. I already knew the story of how the Chiefs got their name and I am not a PC guy anyway. I am a CHIEFS fan first, last, and always. It has been the Chiefs since the move from Dallas and so it shall remain.

  24. SoutheastChief says:

I guess we need to change the team colors also because of the negative association with our name.

On a different but related note -

Adam I guess it’s time to check the old man’s meds.

  25. 303chiefs says:

The Chiefs name should be the Chiefs. If you don’t like it, move to a country where you feel more at ease.

And as for the red face paint, anyone who’s a big enough knob to paint their face is completely irrelevant in the whole scheme of things anyway – so who cares?

  26. Adam Best says:

The funniest thing about this whole satire is that my dad actually got called a liberal. As a liberal, I love that. He’s probably in his office washing himself off right now. He calls himself an Independent, but really he is an embarrassed Republican. Apparently, he’s also now a shock jock.

  27. SoutheastChief says:

At least folks had an opportunity to vent about something besides the latest FA signing/non signing or whether TT,Brodie or Quinn should or should not be traded / released.

I understand the FCC and FBI internet police are reviewing his OpEd for the possible theft of a first 100 days agenda item.

  28. CHIEFS FAN IN CT says:

Adam, maybe “liberal” was a bit harsh lol. After all it was 3:30 in the morning, woke up for no apparent reason, had no coffee yet, and the first thing I half way skim through is an article about my teams name being changed because I guess we’re too sensitive of a society anymore??? I actually did get the sarcasm, but then, the thought of it actually being a reality, that it can and probably does have a good chance of happening…. well, just got under my skin I guess. Course, that’s what I get for being a 20 year military vet and being a republican. Anyways, the thought of it all just makes my skin crawl. Sorry pops, I won’t use the L word on you again!

  29. Double D says:

You think this is bad? Just wait until PETA starts in about the sports world’s abuse of animals (hides used for balls?) and generally condescending attitude (e.g., team names, mascots) towards our fellow planetary inhabitants. Michael Vick was just the beginning . . .

  30. the hammer formerly known as g.l. says:

What about the abuse of that wolf thing at Arrowhead? Huh? What are you gonna do about that? And that so-called dolphin on the side of Miami’s helmet is just absolutely demeaning. It is obviously gay………….oh, wait, I just offended someone else…………….

  31. Double D says:

Lions, Tigers, and Bears, oh my!

  32. dbk301 says:

It is beyond me why the Redskins still have that name. I don’t get why a racial slur is allowed to be a team name.

  33. wrestler189s says:

This has to be the stupidest post i have ever read. I completely agree with 303chiefs…IF YOU DONT LIKE THE WAY WE USE OUR MASCOTS GO CRY TO SOMEONE ELSE IN ANOTHER COUNTRY AND GET OUT OF OURS.
WE’RE KEEPING CHIEFS, END OF STORY!

  34. Kcmontana01 says:

Hey “this old chief”, why don’t we change the chiefs name to the “ABERIGENIES” and call it good? Here’s a thought… how bout you stop your politically correct bullshit and concentrate on something that actually fucking matters. Like the chiefs offseason moves and draft speculation. How bout them apples?

  35. Adam Best says:

Anybody ever heard of satire? Tongue in cheek? Sheesh.

  36. dbk301 says:

    KCMontana,

So what actually matters in life is the Chiefs offseason moves and the draft? Maybe you should go buy yourself some perspective. That way you can put those things where they belong.

  37. km230015 says:

Being Native American I dont think the chiefs are offensive because it is reflecting on the positive side of a people, but Redmen and Redskins seem to be derogatory terms like calling a team the Honkeys, Crackers, Rednecks, Chincs, Darkies, etc. No they use Patriots, Minutemen, etc. The Florida State Seminoles actually have a long standing relationship with the actual Seminole people so they allowed them to keep the mascot. The Chiefs just have an Arrowhead and a Wolf not like we have someone’s face on the side of the helmet. The colleges that chenged should have changed and the ones who didnt were right to keep the names. Last I really dont want the government worrying about sports while they were looking for steroids in baseball to make themselves look good and spending the most money in government ever, maybe they should have been looking at the budget a little more. Let sports fix or kill itself.

  38. kruger26 says:

with a tip ‘o’ the hat to Gregg Easterbrook, how about the Kansas City Kaw River Basin Indigenous Peoples?

  39. kruger26 says:

And while we’re at it, not only are the insensitive racial stereotypes offensive, what about the shocking gratuitous violence that seems to be prevalent in football? And where are the women players? How come there are no handicapped or openly gaylesbiantransgendered players? Where’s Henry Waxman? John Conyers? Someone please investigate!

  40. FairWeatherFan says:

Back during the 80’s they were known as the Chefs and given the way they played last year I would suggest that we use that.

  41. Moufwash says:

dang people this was all tounge in cheek…

that said, Redskins actually is a really bad name along these lines, no way around it
