AADQ: Back To The Draft

AUTHOR: Adam Best | IN: AADQ | COMMENTS: 25 Comments

Now that free agency has slowed down to a crawl — if it ever really got going in the first place — let’s get back to talking about the draft.

Someone I’m looking at is Conner Barwin out of Cincinnati. A tight end until his senior year, when he played defensive end and compiled 10 sacks. Oddly enough, he will likely play neither position in the pros, even though Mike Mayock likes him as a Chris Cooley-type tight end. I see him as a Mike Vrabel-style 3-4 backer. I could also see him putting his hand down some and even playing tight end in goalline packages. He’s got 4.6 speed, and obviously has a knack for getting to the quarterback. The problem is that he will likely go in the second round. Maybe through some wheeling and dealing we can still bring him in?

Who’s someone you are looking at who isn’t currently projected to be a first-rounder?

Barwin is an intriguing athlete.Right now, he is valued in the low 40’s. Given the premuim on getting to the QB, he may sneak into the end of the first round.

A guy I have my eye on for the Chiefs in round three is Jonathan Luigs, Center from Arkansas. He is very mobile, plays with good technique and has good leadership skills.

  2. BucktheFroncos says:

Sintim out of VA looks great to me. But i don’t see him sliding to the 3rd round. Same thing with Larry English. If we happen to miss out on Curry with #3 though we may find a nice player in Zach Follett.

  3. jesse says:

they have got to figure out a way to get back into the second round and/or more picks. Curry would be great but they need alot of linebackers and o-linemen. I really havnt heard for sure that they are going to a 3/4 yet either(just speculation)

  4. Double D says:

I actually think the Pats will end up taking Barwin with the #34 pick. Ironic, huh?

Merlin, I like Luigs in the 3rd round too. In fact, I think there might be several decent interior lineman available at the #67 pick. Here’s hoping we get the right one!

  5. Helmets says:

I agree with a lineman. Robindon has went down on some boards, and how about Caldwell. More realistic would probably be Luigs,Levitre, or maybe Beatty or Loadholt if we go OT.

  6. 102win says:

Took a beating for suggesting this last week, but I will try again. Trade D. Bowe to Dallas for DE Jason Hatcher, RB Tashard Choice and their #69. Trade LJ and Hali to Detroit for their #33. Send a Conditional next year to Cleveland for DT Rodgers. Send Tony G. and our #162 to NYG for their #45. We Draft:

R1 #3 WR Michael Crabtree -Texas Tech
R2 #33 DE Michael Johnson -Georgia Tech
R2 #45 OG Duke Robinson -Oklahoma
    R3 #67 C Jonathan Luigs -Arkansas
R3 #69 WR Louis Murphy -Florida
R4 #98 LB Dannell Ellerbe -Georgia
    R5 #131 QB/WR Pat White-West Virginia
R7 #193 LB Worrell Williams -Cal

if we get #172 for Wiegman take OT Alex Boone-OSU

Yes,I know we loss Bowe,LJ,and Tony. But look what we gain. We would fill many holes on d line,o line and our receivers would be Crabtree,White and Murphy. Cottham gets a chance. D line would be Tank/Dorsey LDE,Rodgers NT and Hatcher RDE. LB’s: DJ @ LOLB,Ellerbe and Vrbel MLB,ROLB M.Johnson

  7. Extrametal says:

So… you’re suggesting we start not one, not two, but three rookie wide receivers for our relatively (cough) inexperienced QB to throw to? No thanks.

  8. dbk301 says:

Trading Dwayne Bowe would be about as bad of a move as you could make. First round wr’s don’t have a great track record. With that in mind you want to get rid of one that actually has proved himself for an unknown? You don’t get better by trading your best young players away.

As for trade scenarios. I don’t get too excited about all of these trade possibilities. Unless it is Pioli and another GM throwing this stuff out there………….it doesn’t matter.

  9. cassel4prez says:

    102 win

I agree with this post the only one i wouldnt do would be bowe for there DE and choice i think we could take curry in first round istread of crabtree and pick up a runningback later in the draft its not worth trading Bowe for Hatcher and choice when runningback are a dime a dozen but i like the idea and i think pioli has something up his sleeve theres no way hes not gonna upgrade the d line and o line with the output we got from them last year

  10. cassel4prez says:

    not gonna upgrade

  11. Chiefs447 says:

    102

I’m respectfully going to tell you that your nuts.

  12. 102win says:

Not as worried about rookie wr’s. I want these trades for certain reasons. Louis Murphy is a huge sleeper in this draft. Forget about the “Florida WR” curse for a minute. I believe he will be better than Bowe. I think Choice would be our best back. I think Hatcher would be about equal to Canty. Taking Crabtree or Curry would be fine with me, just think if we traded Bowe, then we would take Crabtree.

Crabtree,Murphy and White could be three 1,000 yd guys in 2010.

O line would be LT Alberts,LG Waters,C Luigs,RG Robinson, RT ? (Taylor,FA). Very solid in 2010 and beyond.

  13. cassel4prez says:

hopefully we are one of the mystery teams in khalif barnes, i dont know where we will spend are cap that we have to use other than him

  14. 102win says:

    447,

I know where you are coming from, but look at the team we would have and tell me it would not be better. We have fixed both lines, picked up a young stud RB,would have three…I say again three stud receivers.

Eddie Royal and DeSean Jackson had good years in 08.

This would also clear more space on the cap. Front load Crabtree’s deal and Cassel’s new deal. That way next year we enter FA in good shape

  15. happym5555 says:

I’m hoping our apparent lack of interest in FA means that the brain trust thinks it can get more production out of our so called busts or disappointments. I think a lot our guys weren’t being used correctly or given the “best chance to succeed” as they say. I think better coaching and different schemes will help a lot.

  16. cassel4prez says:

It will deffinatly help i wouldnt say alot, a players a player, schemes can have some sort of effect but its not gonna change their talent level

  17. woody says:

I don’t know much about the draft this year…I need to start watching Path to the Draft…

  18. dbk301 says:

    Happy,

I think you are right. The more time that goes by, the more I think that Haley and his staff have decided that the defense has players on it. There are some high draft choices on the defensive side of the ball. I’m guessing the staff thinks that they can get these guys to reach their potential. It would make sense that it was more of a problem with scheme and putting guys in the right spot and situation to succeed. It would be almost impossible to whiff on every defensive player other than our cornerbacks.

  19. Gump says:

Our D is missing LBs and a RDE unless we go 3-4. We have most of the pieces if our LB were serviceable. Vrabel will help, draft Curry and pick up another and that should solidify the LB corps. If we go 3-4 it really helps, but will need to make adjustment on the D-Line. There will be more FA signings, and trades to put us in better position for draft day.

For 3 straight years our D improved, then fell apart trying to implement our abortive version of the Tampa-2. It will be much better this year.

  20. 102win says:

Any thoughts on sending Tony to NYG. I think he would have a lesser role in our offense next year anyway. I would like to pick up a good o lineman for him? NYG has two 2nd round picks this year.

  21. alakan81 says:

All the bizarre trade scenarios are not something that I personally believe will play out.

With a few exceptions (i.e. Randy Moss), Pioli has been known for signing and drafting players that are scheme-specific, multi-tool players that are not necessarily gamebreakers or superstars, but are just very solid and very willing to play their assignment.

There are a few players on the team with experience in the 3-4 (Vrabel, Gilberry) who are known team guys and more are going to be added. We may very well see a hybrid 4-3/3-4 alignment with a player like Hali playing the role of a DE/OLB, although I don’t know that he has the athleticism to do it. Dorsey will probably fit at the tackle/end position that the 3-4 requires. You must remember he was recruited to LSU by Saban, who runs a version of the 3-4.

  22. Chiefs447 says:

    102,

Your starting 7 rookies. No Team improves by starting 7 rookies. I could go on but I don’t think I need too. This is so outrageous for my liking, that I can’t even really argue with you.

  23. zman says:

with all the trade scenarios flying around i thought that i would throw mine out there….

we switch first rounders with cleveland and allow mangenius to pick curry, than we still probably have our pick of crabtree or top o-linemen

and in exchange we get one of clevelands 2 second rd picks

this is of course based on the fact we dont take curry #3

  24. slodawg says:

I’m really going to be sick if it’s not an O-lineman to protect the center piece of our (most) teams. Cleveland doesn’t show an extra second this year per NFL Draft Site 2009. I’d like another second but if I look at the players we got for our two it does ease the pain.

  25. ND23 says:

Well, the obvious thing tosay here is Andre Smith in a much later round. I know he is somewhat of a headcase and definetely out of shape now, but his poor performance at the combine and his poor attitude could be just what the chiefs need to snatch him up in the fourth or fifth round, he could be an instant starter with his obvious natural skill and was projected to be a top 3 pick until he became an idiot.
