Season With Extra Curry?

AUTHOR: Double D | IN: AFC West | COMMENTS: 28 Comments

Free agent pickin’s are indeed gettin’ slim and available WRs are no exception. There is at least one remaining name who merits consideration however. He’s a big, fast, red zone threat that’s known to make a circus catch now and then. He was also recently let go by one of the NFL’s more dysfunctional owner-pretending-to-be-a-GM/coach organizations.

Got to be talking about T.O., right?

Nope. I’m talking about ex-Raider UFA Ronald Curry. That other Curry.

Yes, Curry has had some injury issues along the way. Yes, his production has been a bit off lately. On this latter point though, I have to attribute much of that to the fact he was relegated to second fiddle behind Javon Walker and even more to the fact that the Raiders are rarely in the redzone — i.e., where Curry creates the most havoc. His speed would also allow us to stretch the field better than our current cadre of receivers do. The fact that he, much like Randy Moss did, has languished within the Raiders organization should not be viewed as any kind of knock on this talent either.

The price? Negligible. No draft picks need to be expended on him and dollar-wise, probably somewhere this side of 1.5 mill per year.

One of the things that hurt us last year was our inability to score once we were inside the 20. Wouldn’t it be nice to have another TD weapon to add to our arsenal? I think so. Those Tarheel basketball hops come in handy down there.

What do you think Addicts, — how good would Ron Curry look in Red and Gold?

  1. Crabtree_Michael says:

I’d rather have Bobby Engram. This is only slightly less ridiculous than LJ for Edge. I know we could use an extra receiver but c’mon, I’d rather have Bradley and Franklin than Curry.

  2. Adam Best says:

I like this idea quite a bit, actually. When healthy, Curry has been pretty dynamic despite not playing the position for long and poor quarterback play. Not only was he a hooper at UNC, he was a QB. Wildcat, anyone? Pioli has hit gold on an ex-Raiders receiver once before.

One thing I want to mention is that I think we are waiting to see who all gets released due to the economic state, especially by June 1.

    DD:

Not a bad thought at all. Now, would the name on the back of his jersey say ‘Curry’ or ‘R. Curry’?

  4. Adam Best says:

    Hopefully just “Curry”

  5. Double D says:

As Adam rightly notes, R. Curry’s hoops’ hops make him extra dangerous. Plus, the “down under” combo of Gonz and Curry setting picks and running interference for each other? Just plain sweet.

  6. Adam Best says:

Let’s not leave Dwayne Bowe out of the alley oop equation either.

  7. kcdan58 says:

Adam’s on board…Curry will sign with someone else within the hour.

  8. Double D says:

No doubt. I’m beginning to believe that maybe we should just clam up whenever a free agent prospect pops into our head. As soon as somebody gets mentioned here – poof, they’re off the table!

  9. Double D says:

    furreal

  10. kcdan58 says:

Perhaps Scotty could have already signed him, but won’t let him announce it to the media until Week 1 of the season.

  11. Double D says:

You know, you might actually be onto something there kcdan. I don’t know how much control he would have over something like this leaking out but I imagine Pioli would probably prefer not to tip his hand going into the draft considering there could be a Crabtree/Maclin sweepstakes afoot and how that might factor into Pioli trading out of the #3 pick. Good point!

  12. kcdan58 says:

Oh good…only 6 more weeks of silence. My red and gold blood pressure will be through the roof.

  13. woody says:

    No thank you

  14. Double D says:

Alright Woody I’ll bite. Why not?

  15. WtexKC says:

Sooo, one of the defensive free agents i really wanted the chiefs to go after was igor olshansky from SD…just read that the guy is going to dallas to meet with the team after they just lost canty to the giants. my guess is they will sign him. if they do i have to admit i will be pretty upset with our lack of interest in the guy and to be honest i dont know how much longer this cassel trade can hold me over until we finally decide to sign someone, anyone….

  16. 2383 says:

Like I said before, Curry probably has the most upside out of anyone left. I am not too excited about the wildcat idea however. I think even if miami goes back to that dried up well they will be in for a very long season.

  17. Double D says:

    Crabtree,

Over the life of his very long career, Engram has only managed to average around 5.5% on TDs/Catch. By contrast, Curry, working within a much less productive offense, averages 6.5% on TDs/Catch. In other words, Curry is more likely to score when he gets the ball. Curry also has a hell of a lot more tread left on his tires compared to Engram. Why any team still in the process of rebuilding would even consider Engram at this point in his career is utterly befuddling.

Many times the kind of numbers a player puts up has more to do with where he is than who he is. Don’t believe it? Go check out Randy Moss’ stats prior to, during, and after his stint with the Raiders. Mind boggling stuff.

  18. Chiefs447 says:

I’m on board with Curry. He would be cheap and is only 29. Hell of a lot better option than Bobby Engram.

  19. Coast515 says:

WR CJ JONES Who you ask? My thoughts too, but the Cheifs agreed to terms with him today. Any on have any idea on this one?

  20. Double D says:

    Destined for the practice squad.

  21. Chiefs447 says:

Did anybody else notice we brought in two new coaches this week? Hadn’t seen anything on here about it. Any thoughts? Wonder if we’re still waiting on Romeo.

  22. KCMizzou says:

I would fully support a move on Curry. I still wouldn’t mind Engram either, but I would take Curry over Engram. For the right price, of course. My buddy (who is a Raiders fan) has always been a supporter for Curry too, by the way. He’s always kind of been confused by how little the Raiders used him. And I will say it again, I will laugh at the team that drafts Maclin.

  23. BucktheFroncos says:

Curry has huge upside and if he can figure out a cure for his dropssies he would be a nice pickup. Plus his price is right. Do it i say

  24. 2383 says:

I think the cure for the droppsies is to feed the guy the ball more than three attempts in the fourth quarter. I imagine it is pretty easy to lose interest in a game being a raider. I really wouldn’t mind both engram and curry. Pretty well both bring a different kinda dance to the party.

this is in reference to the C.J. Johnson kid.

  26. happym5555 says:

I fully agree with the Curry move and especially agree with WtexKC on Olshansky! Appears we have close to the most money to spend along with a great number of holes to fill. No moves to be made? Would be nice to hear a whisper of something.
