AADQ: Edge-For-L.J. Trade?

by AADQ

Here’s a thought; the Chiefs and Cardinals exchange problems by trading Edgerrin James for Larry Johnson, or one problem for another. Both players obviously need a change of scenery, and both teams would be better off without the distractions.

The Chiefs get a versatile feature back who knows Todd Haley’s offense and is more reasonably priced. The addition of Edge would keep the Chiefs competitive while they search for their feature back of the future. Jamal Charles is best suited as a third-down back, so this allows him to play a more natural role. Edge also performed very well during the Cards’ Super Bowl run, and is a much better blocker than L.J. He not only can see incoming blitzers, he actually makes an effort to pick them up.

The Cardinals get a younger back who’s potential upside gives them a better shot at making another Super Bowl run. With J.J. Arrington out of AZ and the Cards waiting to cut Edge to keep him from landing in the wrong hands, it’s apparent they will need more than just Tim Hightower. Johnson could be that guy.

Considering that neither player has any trade value right now, this deal makes a lot of sense to me. Otherwise, both teams could just end up cutting their former star running backs. Plus, the Chiefs have already shown a willingness to deal with the new brain trust’s former teams. With all the problems these two franchises are dealing with, it would make a lot of sense for both teams to solve one by making this swap.

Am I taking crazy pills, or does this make sense to everybody else?

I agree with Adam that LJ's trade value is shot. On the other hand, I'm not sure that James' is much higher. I continue to maintain that Edge is one of the most overrated players in NFL history. Also, when did LJ "run mad" or where he showed he was a "competitor" last year. I only saw a few players where I didn't think to myself "Is he jogging?". I'm on a roll today. I think I might have upset someone in all four posts I made today. I love you?

I think we should trade him to the Browns for Shaun Rodgers and a draft pick if we could get one. The Brown need a back(Jamal Lewis is all but done) and we need a big space eating nose tackle to convert to the 3-4 D. This trade would make sense on a lot of levels.

Oh Adam....Edge did not look "great" in the post-season, he only looked decent....and he had just come off an 8-week long bye week...He had been resting for months and was running for a contract with a new team...

Now the Raiders would be a different story.

Todd Haley has a bad history with T.O. We will definitely have zero interest in him, and that is something I'm just fine with.

I just heard that too crazy! good for the cowboys.

HOLY SHIT!!! The cowboys just released T.O.! not saying we should go after this guy, just thought it was some pretty crazy/suprising news

SinMin,

Scott Pioli is only human. I'll believe that until he is able to trade LJ for Steven Jackson.

I was thinking the same thing with the Rams. LJ for Steven Jackson. Plus Tory Holt is probably going to be released, he would be a good addition for a decent price.

Thanks Adam for the story on Otis Taylor. Why he is not in the Hall of Fame, is a mystery. Forget the numbers he changed the wide receiver position. He was a great player. I am sorry that he is ill.

Mr. Adam, I seem to recall, that a certain Mr. James wanted out of AZ. I believe that this was due to the fact a certain coach did not give the ball enough. Why would he entertain the notion of rejoining that coach. I know LJ's name is Mudd here, but I like the guy. He can run. He has power and speed, beautiful. If I am Cassel I'm on the phone with him yesterday. Same with Tony G and Waters. Haley has edges. Cassel has to smooth out the rough spots. Number one pick has to be defense. Anyone who takes Crabtree is taking a very high risk. Go Chiefs

Ok, the hoping for a Bobby Engram signing was one thing, but LJ for Edge. WOW, that is to much to fathom. That would be a HORRIBLE trade. Edge is way over the hill and couldn't even start when Haley was the OC. Why would we want him. We could still get a 3rd or 4th for LJ. Or keep him. Either way is fine, just say no on edge.

Did you guys see this quote?

Bowe: "He called me (Tuesday) morning and said 'Hey, D. Bowe, wake up! I've been watching film on you for two days -- you better get your mind down here.' I'm going to fly to Cali and go see him (this week)."

We've got a great guy in Bowe. I hope this is the start of something special!

I didn't mean personality wise -- but on the field. He would be better than LJ...

He would be another Vrabel? Vrabel has three rings and his been the epitome of a team player. Edge hasn't won anything and has a terrible attitude. He is nothing like Vrabel.

I would take that trade -- if they supplemented with a late pick due to the fact that Edge is ancient. But what better mentor can a RB have? I mean this guy was set up to be one of the most prolific rushers of all time -- look at his years in Indy before he got hurt. He would be another Vrabel type who I think can still contribute.

Oh, and Happy Birthday to me!

I am not an LJ fan, but he is under contract. He wants to have the ball. He needs a hole to run through. With a lead blocker and/or some improved line help he could be a serious threat.

Most of LJ's problems are of his own making. With a new management crew in place LJ has a chance at becoming a solid player again. And lets not forget M. Vrabel, and his 3 (three) SB rings. Talk about instant respect in the locker room. Maybe, just maybe, some of the changes and additions can create a positive impact in the locker room. An impact that might serve to increase the personal responsibility aspect among the players and team mentality for righting the ship.

I believe LJ can still contribute. The changes in the organization could make him a better man and teammate.

Edge's best days are behind him, maybe he doesn't see it, but most everybody else does. (Most everybody) His best gig is as an outlet reciever for the dump off pass after some half ass blocking. I saw the playoffs too. Trying to protect against Fitz running wild left Edge to appear in the open space, catch a dump pass and get 2 yards. But he didn't "inflict his will" on the other teams.

You run in the 1st quarter so you can run in the 4th. Controlling the game and doing what you want to do. No one was really all that worried about Edge. He got some touches, but the D wasn't kept that honest having to stop the run. They stopped it anyway. How was the Edge at getting TDs from 5 yards out?

WtexKC: in regards to the Edge you are correct sir!

He didn't look great in the playoffs. He was OK. I'm sure 99 scouts out of 100 would tell you that LJ is better than Edge right now.

Let me start by saying that the LJ/Edge trade would be a horrible move. Haley didnt use edge in arizona except for a few descent games in the playoffs, LJ is younger/faster and I think people will be suprised how fast attitudes can change with some winning, no one likes going 2-14. That being said, what does Pioli plan on doing with all this cap space we have? It seems to me that all of the elite FA talent is drying up. I think we still need to address WR, DE, OL in FA... Any ideas on what/who we're waiting on????

Adam i agree 100% with you that...he is not done-i mentioned this trade possibilibty january on another post and people shot me down-i dont believe its worth it at this point tho-other than the fact LJ wants out of KC

Folks, Edge looked great in the playoffs. I watched every minute of the postseason, and I can tell you that. He's not done.

Adam,

Edge has lost it. LJ still runs mad. Edge just runs sad.

Let's all stop overselling L.J.'s value -- it's shot. Bottom line: we either gamble and keep him around, move him in a package, move him for a sixth or seventh, or cut him. At this point I would definitely say Edge's trade value is better.

Big Red Cadalliac, Derrick Ward averaged 5.6 yards per carry last season.

Man, the broncos have become retarded. They have signed three new below average injury prone running backs, an over priced long snapper, and tried to trade away Cutler. Now, Tony Sheffler is on the block. lol.

LJ>Edge. That would be a terrible move.

oh, and adam...its easy for an old running back to look good in the playoffs after he hasnt hardly played in the regular season. the guy was running with fresh legs in the hopes he would get some interest from other teams after the season, i dont want to be that sucker team.

Accelerate LJ's cap hit and absorb Edge's salary and have $13 million committed to a frickin' RB? No thank you.

But keep the ideas coming on how to get LJ outta here.

Absolutely no way ,Edge is done . LJ still has some good years left I hope....

LJ may be a B@#ch, but he loves him some stats!!!!

Feed him the ball, and he will run. If anything he is a competitor and always wants to increase his YPC, even if he does not want to be here.

LJ is not going anywhere!

and to BucktheFroncos since there are no WR that are any good left in free agency why not Crabtree!!!! Think D Bowe with Crabtree and Tony G. that would create a near impossible to stop O. Haley has shown that he can make WR very good players. Put him with talent like that of Crabtree and a young D Bowe along with a veteran like Tony G.

Im with BigRedCadillac on this one because of the fact that even though LJ didnt have the year that everyone expected he still played competitive. Hell ya he was pissed if ur a Pro-Bowl player one year and the next the team is completly revamping. I do agree that the chiefs had to clean house and get young but i can also see why players like LJ got mad. His carrys went down from almost the highest in the league to sharing limmited carrys with Jamaal. I think you keep LJ and let him prove himself to Haley and the staff.

Thx but no thx. Whatever happens with LJ I don't want Edge in KC. I don't really want Engram either. But with Coles and Devery both gone, the pickings are getting slim.

I am for allowing LJ to play out his contract here. Any off field antics will cost him dearly this year resulting in his getting closer to double secret probation with the league. He still needs to do a better job blocking but he does have some speed left. It would be nice to see him run angry like he did in seasons past.

So you had a brain fart....so what.
Only A. Petersen with the Vikings had a higher yards per carry than LJ last year (4.8 vs 4.5). I know we ALL hate LJ's behavior and attitude problems but still most of us realize the GRASS is not greener under Edges feet!!
Also, this is a good time to recognize why management is so "secretive"!! Trade value of a teams players is not strictly based on performance. If we the fans ignorantly express lots of dis-satisfaction with a player and try to force management to get rid of him. Or a player and management carry on with disagreements in the public square then that reduces the players trade value just because potential trading partners see a "fire sale" opportunity.

Todd Haley didn't want to start Edge in AZ...so I dont think he would want to trade a younger back to bring him here...

No!!!!!!!

LJ is not going anywhere.

That is not exceptable. I dont want to live on the Edge in KC because he is slower than me and my 40 time is not good. LJ still has some juice left, he will be happy if he gets the ball and we win... wont we all be happy if that happens

LJ has more trade value than Edge. I bet we could get a 3rd or a 4th out of LJ.

I no I am pretty well alone on this one but LJ still has alot of yards left in him. We should keep him until he is done or has some trade value. We need a full back that can lead block and pass block. Look at the downhill slide that happend when we lost Richardson.

If nothing else, that would be totally ironic. The Chiefs were very high on Edgerin James when he came out of college. Lets see when was that, around 1860? I don't think Edgerin has enough gas left.

The Cards run more of a spread attack. LJ doesn't really fit that style.

An intriguing switch if nothing else. Not necessary though - apparently I'm one of the few who believes we are deep in backfield talent in terms of both variety and upside.
