There were some surprise performers at the recent 2009 NFL combine, and then there were performers who did exactly what they were supposed to do. I know Scott “the Scout” Pioli was at the combine critiquing every player to the fullest and taking notes. Now there has been a great deal of speculation as to what the Chiefs will do or should do with the third overall pick in the draft, especially post-Matt Cassel trade, and the truth is that nobody knows what will happen. This is why I believe we as Chiefs fans should feel pretty comfortable going into this upcoming draft with Scott Pioli heading the red and gold, because no matter who we get there’s a good chance he’ll work out. Pioli is known for being an excellent scout and he has been a major part of the Patriots’ recent draft successes (look how they turn out year after year).
Well, all that aside, let’s look back at the numbers from the combine and see if we can’t find out which way S.P. is leaning towards…

After a week of reflection, these are just a few players that stood out at the combine. Aaron Curry looked amazing as expected, and Brian Orakpo might have helped his draft stock with a good combine. Brian Cushing looked great as well. Look for some of these other guys you might not have heard of to go in later rounds even though they had good combines. Things are starting to heat up with these future rookies and it’s getting me excited for the draft. At least we still have some free agency moves and possibly a new defensive coordinator (Romeo Crennel) to hold us over until then. There might even be some more trades?
Looking back, who stood out to you at the combine?
