Chiefs Bring In Mike Vrabel

It’s official! The Chiefs have traded the Patriots for outside linebacker/mean mofo Mike Vrabel. From NFL.com:
New England’s Pro Bowl linebacker Mike Vrabel is in Kansas City undergoing a physical so that he can then be traded to the Chiefs. General Manager Scott Pioli is reaching out to bring in a player familiar with his system, and New England is a willing trade partner.
Look, Vrabel may be 33, but NFL linebackers have a long shelf life. Plus, he made the Pro Bowl and had 12.5 sacks in 2007. He’s far from washed up, and who would know that better than Scott Pioli? I’m sure the Patriots are trying to get younger, so this deal makes sense for them, too.
We’ll have to wait and see what we give up, but for now I like it. This gives us a defensive leader and Pro Bowl-caliber player, albeit an aging one, who knows Pioli and his system. Vrabel is also one of those mean bastards you hate when they are on somebody else’s team, but love when they are on yours. This instantly starts to chip away at the losing culture in our locker room.
He’s also a pretty damn good goalline tight end. The way things are going with our vets — GULP! — we might need one of those.
This also looks like a definite sign that we are moving to the 3-4. Not only that, but a sign that we want to be competitive, and competitive soon. This also shows that the Pats are willing to deal with us, which could mean that a Matt Cassel trade is also on the horizon.
Kansas City, I think you are going to love this guy!
Addicts, sound off on Mike Vrabel coming to K.C.? Are you buying yourself a jersey, cursing the front office or somewhere in between?

Fast and Furious. I still like some other options better but I guess we’ll see what happens
February 27th, 2009 at 1:49 pmI think Bart Scott just went to the Jets in the hopes that Ray Lewis would be there with him. What do you guys think?
February 27th, 2009 at 2:03 pmI like this. He brings a winner attitude. I was one who always hated to see him on the opposition.
February 27th, 2009 at 2:03 pmProbably not Pioli’s #1 choice, but he’s got to field a team this year. If KC moves to the 3-4 they need 2 new starting LBs at a minimum and 3 would be nice.
Can Dorsey play NT?
February 27th, 2009 at 2:06 pm[...] ARTICLEThe New England Patriots have traded outside linebacker Mike Vrabel to the Kansas City Chiefs for a draft pick. Details are sparse, and the whole deal is still pending [...]
February 27th, 2009 at 2:07 pmHOLY SHITAKE MUSHROOMS!!! THE BRONCOS ARE TRYING TO SIGN BRIAN DAWKINS! That is the last thing we need, the donkeys getting good on defense!
February 27th, 2009 at 2:07 pmVrabel had more sacks last year than our whole team… not saying it’s going to translate, but at least he’s aware that one is allowed to tackle the QB (if gently). Does he make Curry’s speed a more attractive option, as the rumor mill tips towards 3-4?
February 27th, 2009 at 2:25 pmIlike the Vrabel signing, but like most hated him as a Patriot.
I think this is saying if we still have the # 3 pick, not trade down, that we take Curry. Vrabel will be able to teach a young stud athlete the right way to do it.
February 27th, 2009 at 2:46 pmIf King Carl and not Pioli would have made this deal what would your reaction be? My guess it would be something like, “I’m tired of all of these guys that are past their prime that we bring in.” There better be a lot more moves coming that make this pale in comparison.
February 27th, 2009 at 2:55 pmI fall somewhere in the middle on this i guess. I like the veteran spice to the youth recipe but it depends on what we had to give up. Any word on the “undisclosed draft pick”? If anything he is an upgrade over what we currently have. Of course, a chick that shops a Lane Bryant is an upgrade if your prom date is your Mom.
February 27th, 2009 at 2:58 pmMike Vrabel traded to KC!
UUMMMM WHAT????????????
I don’t know about this one. It better be a 6th or 7th round pick.
What does he have left? 1-2 years tops!
3-4 here we come.
February 27th, 2009 at 3:05 pmPatriots beat writer Mike Reiss wonders if Mike Vrabel’s trade could be part of a larger deal including Matt Cassel.
Now that would be a doozy. Reiss is one of the most well-respected beat writers in the country, and is usually very cautious to publish anything resembling speculation. He rightly points out that we have no idea what the compensation in the Vrabel trade is.
February 27th, 2009 at 3:08 pmSource: Boston Globe
Vrabel turns 34 in August.
If you wanted an old guy, why not go and get Ray Lewis?
He is old, but can still run, and will get everyone in line on D.
I am just saying.
February 27th, 2009 at 3:20 pmPioli is trying to make this a team that can win right now, and that is what Vrabel is. He is a player meant to bring in to a team that is ready to win in one or two years, will we be ready? I have no clue, but I like the attitude that Mike Vrabel will bring, and I think this guarantees we will be picking Curry
February 27th, 2009 at 3:24 pmAnyone who thinks it’s a good thing we can get Cassel will ultimately be disappointed – I think the guy will be a bust outside of NE…He took over an offense that was a record breaker…I don’t think he can get a struggling team anywhere. I hope he stays put.
February 27th, 2009 at 3:28 pmNews out of New England, is Vrabel could be ONLY part of the deal with KC. Leaks have it being mentioned QB Matt Cassel might be in this package. More to come when it comes available. Sources have it there’s a “Major Announcement” coming close to 6 pm tonight concerning this trade. Stay tuned!

February 27th, 2009 at 3:30 pmI like it as well, depending on what we gave up of course. We have a lot of youth on the team and almost no veterans on defense that can stay healthy enough to be on the field most of the time. This guy can be that. Pioli is addressing something that CP gutted through his terrible drafting over the past 7 years….field generals. Last year, all we had were really young guys, and really old veterans who were injured all the time. Vrabel is up there, but like Adam said, LBs have a long shelf life. I do worry about a 3-4….Dorsey doesn’t have the size for NT.
February 27th, 2009 at 3:39 pmHELL YEAH i really don’t care what all you guys who are talking down to this think this guy is a BEAST. This makes me happy!!!!!!!
February 27th, 2009 at 3:48 pmThe question is, for those who like the trade….what would you give up for Vrabel? I would be willing to go as high as a 5th rounder, I wouldn’t feel nearly as good about a 4th rounder.
February 27th, 2009 at 3:50 pmA fifth sounds about right, unless Pioli gave NE a bonus and made it a fourth. Or there might be more to this than meets the eye at this time. We’ll know soon enough with this announcement coming at about 6 pm EST tonight.
February 27th, 2009 at 4:00 pmYou got a link for that announcement, uh, announcement? I looked over at Reiss’ Pieces.
February 27th, 2009 at 4:01 pmIf you have not already gleemed it from my postings, I am not too excited about this trade as it stands now. Is he part of something we will see.
I think more than 6th s too much for one year out of this guy. Please prove me wrong Vrabel.
February 27th, 2009 at 4:10 pmNo link yet, but I’m working on trying to get more. Heard it from WEEI in Boston about the “supposed announcement coming”. Will update further when and if I’m able to get more info, SORRY!
February 27th, 2009 at 4:12 pmBREAKING NEWS!!!!
JONATHAN VILMA SIGNS 34M DEAL WITH SAINTS!
February 27th, 2009 at 4:13 pmWhy the hell did the Lions sign Maurice Morris? Derrick Ward and Fred Taylor are still out there, right?
February 27th, 2009 at 4:15 pmBecause Kevin SMith RB is their guy.
February 27th, 2009 at 4:18 pmI think this is a good deal for the Chiefs. Vrabel is a great character guy and hard worker. He still has the talent and he will provide GREAT leadership, especially with 3 rings. I expect we gave up a sixth but I would be shocked if it were more than a 5th.
Now if this has something to do with Cassel, well, then that would just be icing on the cake for me. It would have to be a blockbuster, though, for us to get TWO players from NE. God only knows what we would be giving up. Players, Picks, both… Oh, it is just too exciting in KC right now!!
February 27th, 2009 at 4:23 pmTaylor was picked up by NE already, and Ward prolly cost too much for them (or didn’t want to go there). Morris did start some last year and has had a few good performances.
February 27th, 2009 at 4:25 pmI’m pumped! This is the start of the master plan.
February 27th, 2009 at 4:26 pmThis is a joke!! we hade Vilma, Lewis, Brooks and we choose Vrabel. This is not a good sign at all. Vrabel is going to be 34 and isn’t all that productive averages 55 tackles a years and 5 sacks come on. If we gave anything more then a 6 rounder I will be pissed. We could have done better without that pick. Cassel will not be picked up now thats for sure. No teams going to give three of there picks to the same team.
February 27th, 2009 at 4:39 pmHere is the sadest part about this hole thing the LBs that we have average more tackles then Vrabel. So why did we just waste money and picks for some average LB. SADDDDDDDDDDDDD
February 27th, 2009 at 4:42 pmThe only reason we picked this man is for his experience and leadership for the LB named Curry we will be selecting in the draft.
February 27th, 2009 at 4:44 pmI like the trade, just as long as we didnt give up more than a 6th rounder. Vrabel is exactly what Pioli said he wanted in our football team, Big, Strong, Fast, Smart, Tough, Disciplined football players. That is exactly what Vrabel is.

Dawkins is supposedly going to sign with the Donkeys…why are the Eagles letting him get away?
February 27th, 2009 at 4:56 pmBREAKING NEWS : Tampa Bay TV Station FOX 13 is reporting BUCS are finalizing contract extention talks with MATT CASSEL . BUCS and PATS have agreed on DEAL pending CASSEL CONTRACT SIGNING ( 4 years -29.5 million ). Buc ’s official confirms deal is for Buc’s 2009 1st round selection and 2010 conditional 2nd rounder.
February 27th, 2009 at 5:21 pmlink?
February 27th, 2009 at 5:32 pmI haven’t been able to find anything and have been looking for a while. Plus, the compensation (draft picks) seems a little high, especially non-conditional, and the salary seems low. I guess we will have to wait and see.
February 27th, 2009 at 5:36 pmthat’s what I was thinking that salary is BS.
February 27th, 2009 at 5:38 pmEpic…where are you getting this info? I couldn’t find it. As for Vrabel…not horrible, I would have preferred Brooks.
February 27th, 2009 at 5:38 pmNot that it matters but have any of you seen what the Broncos have done today? Buckhalter, JJ Arrington, Jabar Gaffney, Renaldo Hill, David Anderson and are reportedly looking to sign Brian Dawkins and are talking about bringing in Ray Lewis. The last two are the only two I think are even worth talking about. It is nice to see that no other AFC West teams are doing anything to help themselves either.
February 27th, 2009 at 5:40 pmEpic Is Just Getting Shit Stirred Up To Try & Create Controversy
February 27th, 2009 at 5:41 pm‘Anything less than the 35th or whatever it is (the Chief’s 2nd rounder) would be a travesty.’
This from Patsy fans on the Boston Globe message board. LOL
February 27th, 2009 at 5:44 pmVrabel is a good pick up. He will not be a superstar but he’s got rings and can bring some defensive veteran leadership to a very young defense that does not have any.
February 27th, 2009 at 5:45 pmLooks like that 6 PM news conference was to introduce Fred Taylor.
February 27th, 2009 at 5:49 pmI’m not sure I’m working on trying to get some “info” from people in New England. Will let you know what and if I’m able to come up later on.
February 27th, 2009 at 5:56 pmAt this point my wish list looks like this: Canty and Igor wearing red and gold dammit. Cato June and Andra Davis maybe. 1 OT and Guard please and the HOUSH!!!
February 27th, 2009 at 6:02 pmLB Mike peterson still has alot in the tank and I think he would be a huge addition.
February 27th, 2009 at 6:03 pmNow I’m hearing talk of a possible 3 way deal involving the Chiefs, Pats and Bucs. This is crazy, my heads about to explode. LOL!
February 27th, 2009 at 6:07 pmYaaaaa….I’ll believe it when I see it. I mean who knows three team trades happen all the time. Wait…no they dont thats the NBA. I give this 2% chance of this happening.
February 27th, 2009 at 6:12 pmIf there is a three way trade, what would it ential?
LJ to Bucs
February 27th, 2009 at 6:48 pmTony G to Patriots?
??? and Vrabel to Chiefs?
Cassell to go ?????
Picks flying all over the place?
Adam is right about the compensation in $$$ being too low for that rumored deal to be true. Hell, I bhet Pioli found out about it during negotiations and started lowballing Cassel’s agent haha, jk. Although the compensation in picks might be within reason. Who knows what deal Pioli is working on with NE, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Cassel is a part. The only reason we know Vrabel is coming here is because he spilled his beans. They were probably waiting on a Cassel deal to be finalized before making an announcement about any multi-player moves.
February 27th, 2009 at 6:55 pmBTW, Adam, you need to drop some knowledge on the folks over at AHpride. Too many people were relieved when the “Cassel to Tampa” story “broke”
February 27th, 2009 at 6:56 pmSomething is up becuase the Chiefs have not mentioned a thing about the Vrabel trade yet.
Have a great weekend everyone!
February 27th, 2009 at 7:03 pmThat’s because the folks behind AP are Thiggy supporters.
February 27th, 2009 at 7:11 pmLOL, love that Adam. I’m still not buying this entire thing. Something has to be up or in the works. With NE and Pioli now in KC anything is possible.
February 27th, 2009 at 7:32 pmVrabel is a great pick up!! The chiefs had no leadership on D last year mostly because we were and still are so young. Vrabel brings leadership and has played in the big games. And i have an idea. What about the Chiefs getting Chris Canty the DE from the Cowboys? that would give us our DE in the 3-4 Glenn can play nose or Tank Tyler can swich on and off with him while Tamba Hali plays the other end. I also think that the chiefs should really look into Derrick Brooks. Think of the 4 LBs!!!!! DJ, Vrabel, Brooks, Curry!!!! talk about a turnround!!!!!
February 27th, 2009 at 10:42 pmReally wondering if we trade Dorsey. If he isn’t going to work in a 3-4 then unload him now to a team in a 4-3. Canty and A. Smith would be great. Don’t know if any lb’s are left, but I would rather have someone younger than Brooks. Maybe Andra Davis or Mike Petersen.
On the Dorsey trade idea, maybe he showed enough last year to get a late 1st rder this draft.
February 28th, 2009 at 2:34 amAfter watching some comments on NFL network i created a new idea. The chiefs cannot afford to let Dorsey go in a trade. They spent the 5th overall pick on him and twords the end of the year he really showed some flashes of being a great player. I say the chiefs go out and get Rocky B. the DT from the Seattle. This kid is huge and is a disruptive force at DT. This would allow Dorsey to slide outside in a 3-4. I think dorsey could really excel at that position as long as he gets a bit faster. I like the Mike Peterson idea exept that he has had some trouble with the law and pioli already has shown that he wont put up with that stuff
February 28th, 2009 at 7:47 amI know its a little to late because we have cassel now hahah but sorry guys i had that link from NFL.com
