I Want Jon Kitna

AUTHOR: merlin | IN: ChiefStock | COMMENTS: 36 Comments

Outlets like PFT are reporting that Jon Kitna is likely to be cut from the Lions soon. If he is, I want the Chiefs to sign him as a backup QB. Granted, this isn’t a sexy move, like trading for Cassel or Anderson would be, but I think it makes a lot of sense.

Assuming we don’t move on a young veteran QB, we are looking going into the season with Tyler Thigpen and Brodie Croyle or a rookie QB. With such a young group of QB’s it is important to have a seasoned vet to mentor and spot start if needed. Kitna is a seasoned vet who has had success in the NFL. I want that type of QB with our youngsters. At this stage in his career, Kitna should be accepting of a backup/mentor role.

Now, you may be saying: what about Quinn Gray? Sorry, he is almost 30 and has attempted less than 200 passes in his NFL career. Counting on him is not a wise move.

What about Jeff Garcia? Garcia fits the bill almost perfectly. The problem is that Garcia is a West Coast Offense QB. He would not work in KC, nor do I see him going to a team that does not run the West Coast Offense.

OK, Addicts have at it. Should we go after Kitna? Do you like another backup QB?

i understand the idea of a vet qb but kitna come on this wouldnt be my first pick but on the other hand im sure he wouldnt do any worse than culpecker would have whats wrong with garcia or leftwitch both established qbs maybe slightly past their prime but could still bring their experience to the table

  2. Merlin:

Man I appreciate the enthusiasm. What you just said makes sense, but why not just keep Damon Huard on instead of paying these guys to come here and rot?

Wouldn’t the better route be to play Thigpen, and draft and develop another QB.

    Thigpen Starter
    Quin Gray/Huard Back up
Draft Pick battling it out with Gray/Huard

    Cut or trade Croyle

    GO CHIEFS

  3. Adam Best says:

I just want to remind those of who overlooked the “Posted By: Merlin” in bold at the top of the post, that this was Merlin, not me. No way. I understand the thinking, but we have back-ups. What we need is a starter. By the way, just because a move is “sexy” doesn’t mean it isn’t the right one.

  4. Prediction: Ball State quarterback Nate Davis: He will be the one backing Tyler this year. Arrowspread looks like it is here to stay.

What we really need to focus on is who is going to replace LJ?

Not impressed with Kolby Smith, Jamaal Charles.

Also, unless we pick up Romeo Crennel (maybe) I am not impressed with our Defensive coaches whatsoever. Someothing is going on with Romeo, I can just feel it, why else not name the D cordinator. Romeo has to be contemplating the job.

    GO CHIEFS!!!

  5. 2009 NFL Draft Prospect Scouting Report:

    person
    Nate Davis, QB, Ball State
Davis (the son of Bellaire, Ohio) is probably the next best QB to come out of the small school ranks. He started seven of twelve games as a true freshman in 2006, while completing 150 out of 245 passes for 1,975 yards with 18 TD and 8 INT. In 2007, Davis posted 3,667 yards worth of passing on 270 out of 478 attempts with 30 TD and just 6 INT — he played his best against the best. Against the once powerful Nebraska Blackshirt defense, Davis took them for 422 yards and three TD. He was named the teams’ Most Valuable Player after the season.
Davis has it all. A big frame, powerful arm, and accuracy to go along with them. He is athletic enough to buy time with his leg, and he goes through his progressions with relative ease. Check his second and third options rather regularly. He is a leader who takes command of the huddle. However, he lacks experience, his throwing motion needs refinement and his footwork needs more development.

Davis, a junior, is a rare physical specimen. He is a true NFL product. If he declares, and all indications points towards that, he would be highly sought after by many teams. He is a second round talent who, with a great last two months of the season, could sneak into the later stages of the first round. Davis will be a starter in the NFL by 2010.

  6. Ball State QB Nate Davis Scouting Report
    Height: 6-2, Weight: 217

Strengths: Tremendous arm strength…throws an excellent hard ball…athletically gifted and can move very well in the pocket…has some scrambling ability…has the skills to extend the play…throws from a variety of angles…as his career at Ball State progressed, as did his leadership abilities…just now scratching the surface of his professional potential…has an accurate deep ball and may stretch a defense more than any other QB prospect in this draft class…tons of upside here to like…

Weaknesses: Needs to continue to develop his accuracy, and throw the ball into tighter windows or he will not find success at the next level…playing at Ball State, the level of competition was not very good, so his production should be criticized somewhat…needs to develop more touch on his longer passes, can not gun the football on every toss…also needs to develop a better feel for the game and to get rid of the football on time on precision routes…do not expect a starting NFL QB in 2009…

Overall: The more film you watch on some prospects, the more scouts tend to sour on a prospect, Nate Davis is one of the unique prospects that are an exception to the rule. Nate Davis is going to take time to develop, but a development escalation the likes of 2008 rookie QB Joe Flacco is not out of the realm of possibility. Nate Davis is a strong armed, mentally tough prospect, who brings excellent intangibles to the table, yet a prospect who must develop an NFL level accuracy and is going to take time for refinement. Scouts opinions vary on Davis as much as any other prospect in the 2009 draft class, his name could be called anywhere from the latter portion of the 2nd round until the latter portion of the 3rd round.

Why don’t you guys let Jeremy do segments on here? The guy loves to take up space with wasted Copy and Paste. O wait, thats why he doesn’t do segments!!!!

I like the idea of Kitna being signed.

I say we drop Brokie like the Hokie Pokie dance and show him the way out.

I like Gray being on our Squad..I think were going to be suprised about how much he’s is going to be mentioned when OTA’s come around. They guy is big and strong and can sling it..I think with the propper QB coach this guy will either be a starter for us depending if Thiggy gets hurt. Or someone will want to trade for him. Just my opinion.

  8. Mr. TeamPriest31:

I am so sorry I waste your time and space.

Might I suggest when you see my name you just skip my post.

Your personal attacks are not necessary.

I beleive my posts add plenty to this site, and have for a couple of years now.

  9. Dr. Paine says:

Yea personal attacks are fo’pa here at AA. If you want to do that, you can go to KC star’s website.

Jon Kitna, maybe. He can still play, his leadership and knowledge would prove to be invaluable in a young locker room. It depends on who else is signed and what they cost.

I agree about Nate Davis. He could eventually be this year’s Joe Flacco, a “boom-bust” prospect who I thought was a huge reach in the first round last year when he was drafted, but that’s why Ozzie Newsome is one of the best at talent eval and I am a mere fan. Flacco is more of a nerd than your typical NFL QB. He studies film constantly and is a workaholic, both accelerated his development. He played at Delaware, but had that ideal NFL QB body and arm, like Davis. If Nate Davis can demonstrate similar intangibles in interviews and meetings with coaches and scouts, I would love taking a swing at him with our 2nd.

  10. eyepod says:

Nate Davis is too short. I want a 6′4″-6′5″ guy back there. Those are the types of QB’s that make plays like Ben and Eli did in the SB.

  11. Dr. Paine says:

Drew Brees is too short. Oh wait, no he isn’t! I know it’s the exception to the rule, but 6′2 is serviceable at the very least.

  12. Good point Paine. Pioli drafted Brady and Cassel and both are 6′4″.

  13. Dr. Paine says:

Brett Favre is 6′2. He’s a first ballot HOF (despite him throwing one million interceptions in the last several games of his career LOL)

  14. Merlin says:

I probably should have covered Huard in my original posting. From Huard’s expression on the sidelines last year, he did not want to go into the game. His ‘injury’ was a bit unusual. I really wonder if he quit on the team. I am not sure that bringing him back would set the right tone. Leftwich is possible and makes some sense. I prefer Kitna, but you can make the case for Leftwich. Anderson is a long ball thrower with no touch. No thanks, I pass on that type of QB. I am not a fan of Cassel. He played well wtih a good team. He would come with a high price in terms of picks a salary. Let New England eat Cassel and his huge contract. Let Detroit give the #20 pick in the draft and relive the Scott Mitchell years. I would prefer to ride Thiggy for a year and see Pioli take a QB in rounds 4-5. Right now, I see Cassel at peak value. Smart money doesn’t buy at peak. Smart money doesn’t chase the flavor of the month. Sign a solid vet QB, draft another QB in the mid-late rounds and build the O-line and D7.

  15. Adam Best says:

I don’t think he meant any harm, but it was below the belt. Keep it clean, boys. And Jeremy has always added a ton to this site as one of our oldest commenters. Part of running a good sports blog is giving others the access to the latest news — Jeremy helps us do that.

  16. Chiefs447 says:

Do I need to pull this car over?

  17. TeamPriest31 says:

I didn’t mean any Harm..I’ll just keep my Hard Hat on and keep on Working..

My bad Jeremy…I do see alot of people don’t have any insite to players out there..So posting scouting
reports on players is a cool thing.

  18. KCFan_SanDiego says:

If we’re going to sign some crappy veterans who never showed their worth… I’d rather go with David Carr as he enters FA. But then again, I think we shouldn’t sign any of them.

I really like Nate Davis despite his last bowl game. I think has potential with the proper grooming.

  19. dat fan of chiefs says:

well maybe this is out of line here and i know its a long stretch but im really liking chase daniel from mizzou dont know if he could hang and he really isnt very tall there is just something about this guy that i like and up until a few days ago i had no clue who nate davis was from what i have read about him i think he could be an awesome fit but for the present thigpen is the man and i totally feel he has earned his spot as #1 qb

  20. TeamPriest31 says:

David Carr has already re-signed with the Giants with a one year deal.

They also terminated the contracts of running back Reuben Droughns, cornerback Sam Madison and safety Sammy Knight.

  21. Chiefs447 says:

I would be more concerned about Chase Daniel playing in the exact same spread-offense from high school thru college, than I would be about his height or lack there of. His knowledge of the offense certainly helped him to be a better QB in college.

  22. Prospero15 says:

Screw that I want Chase Patton in the 7th round. Check this out. http://sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/story?section=magazine&id=3632340
The dude is a beast; looks like a “Matt Cassel” type pick.

  23. woody says:

OH my goodness…..this is not a good call…

  24. dat fan of chiefs says:

well you know chan gailey is one of the best OCs in the league if he is around for a few years he can make the offense daniel’s we got franklin a familiar target bowe who is awesome when he catches it and add crabtree to the mix and we could have best offense in the league again i just know that height seems to be a pretty big factor in qb i personally dont care if the guy is a midget if he can move the ball GO CHIEFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. Whir says:

Quinn Gray is fine in my opinion.

  26. 102win says:

Could we move Huard to Dallas, maybe for a fifth?

  27. Maine_Chief says:

I’d rather have Ryan Fitzpatrick than the names listed on here. He fits the offense, is young, and improved as he played last year with Cinci (on a truly bad team). He’s not starter material, but I think he’ll be a good backup for years.

    Roll with Thiggy in ‘09!

  28. baldy says:

“Roll with Thiggy in ‘09″ Amen. If you look at the numbers (outside of the Atlanta game which I think all of us can agree he wasnt ready for) he really wasnt that bad. Considering what he was working with. No running game, Sir Drops Alot aka D Bowe and an avg at best line…

I’d say give him and Haley/Gailey a shot. I’m not saying to not draft someone to groom (I still like Freeman if he has a good combine and he’s there in the second…he probably wont be) but Kitna is probably a good option as a #2.

    Roll with Thiggy in 09!

And I dont think theres anyway we get a 5th for old man river.

  29. baldy says:

Oh ya, and is this the year we groom a Tony G. replacement. I think we better look long and hard with how deep this class is. That Casey kid looks sharp. Tony’s gone in two years tops and I dont think Cottam is going to be the guy. He’s shown some talent but he’s no Keller or Witten.

  30. Chiefs447 says:

To all the Thiggy supporters, what type of offense are we going to run if he stays as the starter? Just curious.

Also I would have to disagree with you Baldy about Cottam. He may not be Tony, but Tony is the greatest TE in the history of the NFL, and plenty of teams have won Super Bowls with less at the position.

  31. sgt_ducttape says:

    Speaking of Quarterbacks…
I’m confused, is Drew Brees too short or not? Wasn’t he a contender for MVP of the league there for a while? If a QB is 6′4″ he is a “Big Man” in the pocket, but if he’s 6′2″ he’s a midget? If he runs a 4.5 40 he’s greased lightning, but if he turns a 4.8 he’s a statue? It makes me wonder if “Big Ben” can even turn a sub-5 40. Some short time ago folks round these parts were contemplating McNabb. Talking about his pocket presence and natural ability. But after several knee surgeries I would doubt he could beat Thiggy in a 40.

So Brokie is glass rose, Clipboard Huard is gunshy, and Gray is getting grayer. I fail to see how getting a knowledgable veteran (pick one from the launfry list available) would not be an improvement from the three listed above. Simms, Losman, Grossman, Orton, Leftwich, Kitna, Anderson, Carr, Boller, etc. etc. would all beat out Brokie, Clipboard, and the Ghost for at least a backup position.

It seemed to me that Thiggy did pretty darned good at scoring points. Isn’t that what the offense is supposed to do? You loose by the other team having more than you do. So…since we couldn’t stop Richard Simmons from scoring last year maybe being 1-10 isn’t completely Thiggy’s fault. You don’t set a new league record for the least sacks in a season and not suck defensively.

When Trent Greene was setting the world on fire, and making St. Louis feel stupid for letting him go, we had the same problem. We scored many points but if we got stopped more than once during a game we lost because we couldn’t catch up (stop them). Yet nobody was up for getting rid of Trent.

I could say that Thiggy set all the schools records at Coastal Carolina, but what did the guy before him do? So we got a fired up young QB with almost a years experience under his belt with the absolute best TE ever to play the game saying he wants to play catch with him. That’s got to count for something. He’s played with every QB we’ve had for the last decade about.

Chiefs447, as well as he played with what he had I think we wouldn’t have to run the Arrow-spread alot if our Oline was improved, he had another quality target to throw to, and we could run the ball 80 yards a game. If opponents had to respect the run and 3 guys down field could catch, and Thiggy had 4 seconds to run his game, the formation becomes a null factor. Just run something.

  32. baldy says:

Sgt you are right on. Does that record fall on him or the D who gave up umpteen games in the last two minutes. Why wouldnt we run the same offense as last year or what we saw in Arizona. I think thats a no brainer. Do you really think were going back to a power running game. I think not.

One thing Duct tape I dont think Coastal even had a football team before Pigpen. I might be wrong but I thought I remembered something about that. Feel free to correct me.

Why not get another TE. Sure teams have won without them but with the class being so deep why not try and grab another one. Cottam will probably be OK and may be serviceable but is he big blocker or a pass catcher? My money’s on blocker. Just a thought.

I’m not comparing the two trust me. But Brady wasnt Manning coming into the league and when they gave him a shot. We all know how that worked out. Pigpen is not Brady but he did well with what he had. For now he’s cheap, we can groom another dude. So I think he just deserves a shot to prove us wrong.

  33. sgt_ducttape says:

Baldy, Tyler Thigpen was the first QB for the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. He went 30-8 with them and holds all records (there was no one before him).

If we are going to get another TE, and we will eventually, why not get one to be mentored by the master? A good blocker and passing threat down field would be money. Not just another offensive lineman.

Check Manning’s stats (either one really) his first year wasn’t awe inspiring. Eli’s roolie year the crowd loved him in the first half of the season. He got worse thru the season. But Tiki and Plaxico put Eli on the map. Truly, before the 2007 season, the G Men were 25-23 (01-06) and had lost the 2 playoff games they went to. Coughlin was against the wall contractually. But Strahan set the sack record and Tiki lead the league in rushing. Somehow Eli was SBMVP.
Eli 2005 75.9 passer rating (23rd in the league) his first full season. In 2006 he had a passer rating of 77.0 (18th in the league). In his SB season he had a 73.9 regular season passer rating. His career passer rating against active NFL QBs is 76.1 (26th). Below that of the likes of Damon Huard 80.6 (22nd).

  34. sgt_ducttape says:

In the 2007 SB David Tyree made the clutch catch and Eli chose the Escalade Hybrid.

  35. redbeard says:

lets just keep the QBs we have and not waste time, on something we could spend it on better
