Gailey, Gibbs, Pendergast Open Thread

I just got home not too long ago after a day of travel hell. From tired of being delayed to…dead tired. That being said, I knew as soon as I did a post about the Chiefs being slow and methodical , they’d instantly respond with some big news. They didn’t disappoint…

Chan Gailey is staying. I’m almost 100% certain that he’s going to retain his offensive coordinator job.

Clancy Pendergast and Gary Gibbs have been hired and one of the two, probably Gibbs, will be our defensive coordinator. Gibbs and Pendergast. Sound like a couple of NASCAR drivers.

I have a whole lot of thoughts on these moves and also want to further delve into the Boldin and Cassel situations, but since I’m completely dead I am going to leave this up as an open thread until I get around to it.

Addicts, sound off on the Chiefs’ coaching hires…

Nice one buckthefroncos!

Part of me wonders if Gailey, who has coaching experience on both sides of the ball, could end up as Asst HC with perhaps overall QC?

The other coaches just hired or already on the payroll are (with possible responsibilities following):

Joel Collier - RB/WR, Secondary
Steve Hoffman - ST, QC
Bill Muir - OC, OL
Pat Perles - OC, OL, Defense?
Dedric Wood - WR, OQC
Tim Krumie - DL
Bob Bicknell - OL
Joe Allessandris - Asst OL

I'd say the only 2 things we can be somewhat certain of at this point are:
Steve Hoffman will be in charge of Special Teams.
Tim Krumrie will continue as DL coach.

That, and we're loaded up on OL coaches.

Residual question - will there be a QB coach?

Curry is versatile enough to project as Mike in the 3-4 or Sam in 4-3. Going to the 3-4 becomes more of an argument for whether we should take Raji with our first pick because he can at least play NT. Tank Tyler is about the only guy I can think of currently on the roster with any potential to play NT.

Maybe neither Gibbs or Pendergast is the DC. Why else not list the titles.

Can you say Romeo Crennel is recuperating from hip surgery?

Interesting stuff... also with the announcement that the Chiefs are switching to the 3-4, it all pretty much locks up Curry at 3.

It's going to be a completely clean slate on the D.

OK, I'm trying very hard to be optimistic here, and I really don't want to judge the new leadership before their first...well...anything, but feel free to fire away at what I say:

First, Pendergrast's defense was horrible all year in the desert, but they did turn it on when it counted most.

Second, both former DC's defensive stats would be expected to be low due to their high-octane offenses. When you score quickly, your defense is going to face many more plays, which means it will naturally give up more yards, points, etc.

Filling the positions until we can get who we really want next season???? I don't know. Doesn't sound that good to me.

DD,

You may be right on with the Gailey info. As for the DC candidates, your stats have me worried even more. I saw a post somewhere about Crennel talking to Pioli about a defensive role, but not the DC job. It sounded like he didn't want it.

Well our defense is already a disaster so i don't think they can do much worse. And would you tell everyone what your hand is in poker i don't think so, so why would you tell people what you are gambling with in the million dollar players?

Well according to Wiki Gibbs is the new DC.

LMAO.

I would prefer Pender-the-defender(now who's got jokes V-rod) to revamp our pitiful D but fresh insight from both can't be a bad thing for our team. Plus Gibbs has proven he can coach linebackers. Truth be told I like these moves. It's my feeling that their success in AZ will bring something we haven't seen here in a long time. A winning mentality. That can only help this group of young players. I'm more pissed about both Dansby and Suggs getting the Franchise Tag. I guess that leaves Scott and Crowder, but both were definitely my second tier choices. Either way though thats a hell of an upgrade.

Having either as DC is pretty scary to contemplate.

Some glaring stats/rankings for Gibbs since he took over as DC for the Saints:

2006 Avg YPG rank 11th
2007 Avg YPG rank 26th
2008 Avg YPG rank 23rd

2006 Avg Passing YPG 3rd
2007 Avg Passing YPG 30th
2008 Avg Passing YPG 23rd

2006 Avg Pts PG 13th
2007 Avg Pts PG 25th
2008 Avg Pts PG 26th

Some glaring stats/rankings for Pendergast since he took over for the Cards:

2004 Avg YPG 12th
2005 Avg YPG 8th
2006 Avg YPG 29th
2007 Avg YPG 17th
2008 Avg YPG 19th

2004 Avg Passing YPG 9th
2005 Avg Passing YPG 12th
2006 Avg Passing YPG 30th
2007 Avg Passing YPG 28th
2008 Avg Passing YPG 22nd

2004 Avg Pts PG 12th
2005 Avg Pts PG 26th
2006 Avg Pts PG 29th
2007 Avg Pts PG 27th
2008 Avg Pts PG 28th

Point being, both have ruined their respective defenses after arriving.

One can only hope that the reason neither have been officially given the title of DC yet is because we still have yet to hire one.

Regarding the retention of Chan Gailey, I take away a couple of things. As a first year HC, Haley probably has his hands too full to be adding play calling to his list of responsibilities - that may change in future. The other thing that I interpret from this is that Pioli and/or Haley see enough upside in Thigpen to stick with him as the starter under Gailey's guidance for at least another season.

I am on-board with the with the assessment of the new coaching staff. Not a who's who. Gibbs and Pendergast were both let go by previous teams. All this secrecy for what. It seems like the same old coaching merry go round to me. Hope and change. In the end I guess we just hope for change. Here is some change I think we can all live with. Lighten up on the secrecy. This is football not national security. Go Chiefs!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh and Tim. Until I see it in writing from the Chiefs or in a video from the team, I am thinking Clancy would be the DC. Why would he come here otherwise? To be demoted. I mean his D in Arizona was good enough to get them into the SB. If our D had been half as good as theirs needed to be then we might have had 6 wins instead of 2.

Wow. So is Gibbs that bad or did he just not have that much talent last year with his old team? We have some talent on our D and will likely get some better talent via FA and the draft.

Oh and Adam, I suppose you have your ammunition ready to start bashing Gailey since you were so unimpressed with him last year. Wonder why he is still part of the team? Maybe Haley/Pioli saw something you didn't and some of us did? And quote me stats about wins and losses, 98% of our losses came from a lack of Defense NOT offense. You might say our Defense was OFFENSIVE! Geez I crack myself up!!! Seriously, why did they keep Chan if Haley is going to be the OC/HC?

Relax Tim you don't need to stroke out. I have to agree neither were high on my list of candidates. I still have complete faith in Pioli, and that he knows what he is doing.

I hope this is not some type of "Good Old Boys Club", since I don't know if there were those ties back to the Tuna or whoever.

OMFG!!!!

If gibbs is our DC im going to shit bricks. That will be the worst F%CKING move we could of made. I was ok with the hiring on Haley, on the one condition we get a great DC. Gibbs is not a great DC, hes not even a good DC. We got shitters for coaches and our D is going to be exactly the same. This F*CKING mindset of offence only is F*CKING annoying. We are just going to repeat what we have done in the last 10 years. F*CKING Vermiel era all over again. This is going to be another wasted season because of our ennefecientcy in hiring a good F*CKING DC.

OMFG

From everything that is being reported it would seem that Gibbs is the DC over Pendergast. After anxiously waiting to see who was going to be hired the last couple of weeks. This rollout of coaches was a letdown. The thing that bothers me most is that Tim Krumrie kept his job. His defensive line was the worst statistically of all time. How does he keep his job after that? Hali and Dorsey first round, McBride second round, and Tyler third round. He couldn't coach them up to get double digit sacks?

i dont know much about gibbs but reguardless of who is dc i hope it all works out in the end

There's just no way that Gibbs is DC over Clancy. No way. Doesn't make sense.
