AADQ: NFL Combine

by Chiefs

I’ve been laying low and enjoying a little break out in Cali, but now that the NFL combine is upon us I can’t help but think about it. I’ll be back tomorrow with an onslaught of combine coverage, but for now…

Addicts, which players will you be watching during the combine?

There isnt any one player that im curious to see but there is always one or two players that really do a great job and pop out at ya. as i recall last year my 2 favorites from last years combine were dominique rodgers cromarie and dustin keller. It wouldnt surprise me if the Ohio St boys(Jenkins,Wells,Laurinitis) ran away with this combine but we'll see

I know it was a joke. I wouldnt take any of them I have all my eggs in Pigpens basket.

Baldy,

Rivers was like #4 or something like that. The Chargers actually picked Eli, but he and his family stated Eli WOULD NOT play for the Chargers. So they traded NY for Rivers after he was drafted.

Uh... Philipe Rivers... Duh

Several years ago there was this guy, stocking shelves at the Hi-Vee, played some arena ball, NFL Europe, none of the scouts liked him when he came out of the University of Northern Iowa. He didn't even get to start there until his senior year. Since then he has been NFL MVP twice, owns the 3 biggest single game passing yards totals record in Superbowl history, 4th all time career passer rating, second most accurate passer in NFL history, oh, and he played in 3 SBs winning 1 of them.

What round was Tom Brady picked in? What round was Tony Romo picked in? David Garrard played for East Carolina University and was picked up in the 4th round. He's had 2 pretty good seasons back to back.

My point is that the bias exhibitted by the "World Wide Leader In Sports" influenced newsheads has scewed the picking of prospects. Look at the other side of it. How has Vince Young done so far? Vick was a number 1. Remember Davic Carr? How about Ryan Leaf? I think the Texans have gotten much better mileage out of Mario Williams at #1 in 06 than Reggie or Vince. But all the newsheads moaned the Texans were out of their minds.

Ever heard of Omar Jacobs? He was a Chief for a short minute, then we sent him to NFL Europe. He now plays indoors (arena) and won the AIFA Championship. He threw for over 3,000 yards, threw 208-362 for 56 TDs and 12 INTs, in an arena. In 2004 he set the record for the best touchdown-to-interception ratio in NCAA Division I-A history at...wait for it...at Bowling Green.

I just want to point out that in the 2004 draft Eli (Ol' Miss-SEC) was #1 and Big Ben (Miami OH-MAC) was #11. Which one would you want?

Well I'll shout at the wind here one last time. Did anybody (scouts, coaches, football fans) see the Sugarbowl? Alabama was No. 1 for most of the season and Utah flat out whooped them up and down the field. The QB Brian Johnson picked apart the 'Bama D like they were high school b-teamers. They did this in what amounted to 'Bama's back yard.

Johnson threw 3 TDs in the 1st quarter. The final score was 31-17. This was with Utah totalling 13 yards on the ground (1 TD). They stuffed 'Bama, scored fast and never looked back.

Johson is 26-7 for 56 TDs and 26 ints. In 2 seasons he became the schools all-time leader. But some newsheads are saying he's undersized at 6' 200lbs. Thats the same size as Drew Breez. Several boards have him going undrafted after leading his team to an undefeated season and an argueable piece of the National Championship.

Maybe I'm slow or dense, but aren't we going after smart, tough players? Sanchez has a decent year with a team overloaded with talent and he's a No.1? Stafford could barely beat Michigan State with Knowshon Moreno by his side. At 10-3 Georgia had to sneak into the Capital One Bowl. But somehow Stafford is a top 10 pick? They lost to Alabama, Florida and Georgia Tech. In three years he 51 TDs and 33 INTs.

I don't get it. But I do know there is alot of "big conference" bias against those MWC schools. Just ask Boise St. I'm not saying Johnson is Montana re-incarnated, but why the dis? The big newsheads in the sky must just hate the MWC, after the SEC bought and paid for the BCS I mean.

Yea but the combine cancels out all variables. Pro days can be "set up" to benefit the players.

Stafford will be at the combine. He just won't be throwing at it. I'm sure he will throw at his pro day and when he makes team visits.

It's rare - doubt it will happen.

Trades seem are hard to predict but those teams would qualify. It just seems like if you're drafting in the top five, you must have plenty of holes to fill, so can't you find somebody worth it to help your team? Trading out of the top five just doesn't make sense to me.

Or maybe the Jets or SF will trade up to get him?

I think it is a bummer that he won't be at the combine. I wanted to see how he would do. Its a bummer even more so now (since the Furrey article came out) because we may actually have a chance to draft him.

447 - why is that a bummer? You think we'll end up with Stafford or something?

"Sanchez, Curry, Brown"

Different ways to prepare rice?

Mark Sanchez fo sho. I wasn't aware that Stafford wouldn't be there which is a real bummer.

In an interview with Sirius NFL Radio, Mike Furrey said he heard recently through former teammates that the Lions plan to make Daunte Culpepper their starter. "Well, you know, I've spoken to a couple of my friends that are the backups there or who were there while I was there," Furrey said on Sirius' "Press Pass" show. "I've talked to them over the last week or so, and I know they are going to name Daunte Culpepper the starter. "So that with the first pick would probably mean they are going to go in a different direction, probably offensive tackle or whatever they are projected. From Danny (Orlovsky) and a couple of other guys I've talked to, obviously, they've been offered to come back at the backup position, so I figure they are going with Daunte." Culpepper, who faired poorly with four touchdowns and six interceptions in five starts last season, is due a $2.5-million roster bonus at the end of the month. Jon Kitna is due a $500,000 bonus, and Orlovsky is an unrestricted free agent. -- Detroit Free Press

Even more so a bummer now.

SGT, I know where your're coming from with the big school bias, but Alex Smith went to Utah and he certainly didn't get overlooked (prolly should have though) and Joe Flacco went to Delaware and became a 1st rounder. Even Big Ben went to Miami OH and didn't get overlooked. I'm not saying the scouts are always right but the theory or formulas they use are prolly pretty acurate. Sure some will slip by, but they must go by what works most consistently, I would guess.

Honestly I think Freeman is the most interesting prospect in this draft. Crabtree second considering how high everyone is on him. Freeman being a hometown boy with prototypical size. If he has a good not great but good combine he could be this years Flacco. And I think we all know how that turned out. Especially with how thin the QB crop is this year I think for Kansas Citians this is the most interesting story.

Not saying that we should draft him at three but if he has a good combine jump back into round 1 and grab him. Just a thought.

It will be interesting to see what OT's separate themselves from the others in the interviews and tests. Also the individual drills will determine what order they all go in...

These are the guys that I am curious to see:
1. Curry
2. Monroe/J Smith
3. Brown/Orakpo/Maybin
4. Freeman

Have always like Curry. I think Monroe or Jason Smith would be the perfect tackle for us and let Albert move in or to the right side. I like those 3 ends and would like to see if one stands out. Freeman would be of interest to me if he would drop to a 2nd or even 3rd round and let him watch from the side for a while.

I have no doubt that Pioli will get the right person the make the Chiefs better now and in the future.

I will pay close attention to

1. Aaron Curry
2. Everett Brown
3. OLs (mostly Jason Smith)
4. Rhett Bomar

I thnk these guys should be our top 4 draft choices or at least positions if value is available.

The Wonderlic is an excellent measurement if you know what your looking for. We use it to assess potential hires and our expectations are different depending on the position to fill. It has worked very well and has been a very valuable piece of information for many years.

Sorry about all the posts, hope you're all not annoyed; but I find it interesting:

Wonderlic score does not guarantee success, but Pioli wants tough smart guys.

Just keep it in mind.

Wonderlic* Practice Questions Set 1

1. A physical education class has three times as many girls as boys. During a class basketball game, the girls average 18 points each, and the class as a whole averages 17 points per person. How many points does each boy score on average?

2. Randolph has 8 ties, 6 pairs of pants, and 4 dress shirts. How many days could he possibly go without wearing the same combination of these three items?

3. John is a mechanic. He makes $8.50 an hour, plus $3 extra for every oil change he performs. Last week he worked 36 hours and performed 17 oil changes. How much money did he make?

4. A box of staples has a length of 6 cm, a width of 7 cm, and a volume of 378 cm cubed. What is the height of the box?

5. What is the average of all of the integers from 13 to 37?

6. A basketball player averaged 20 points a game over the course of six games. His scores in five of those games were 23, 18, 16, 24, and 27. How many points did he score in the sixth game?

7. Arnold is about to go on a 500-mile car trip. His mechanic recommends that he buy a special highway engine oil that will save him 50 cents in gas for every 25 miles of the trip. This new oil, however, will cost $20. Is it worthwhile for Arnold to buy the oil if he has a coupon for $4 dollars off the price?

Answer Key:

1. Answer: 14. Since the class has three times as many girls as boys, the class is composed of 75% girls and 25% boys. To find the number of points each boy scores on average, we solve the following equation: 0.75*18 + 0.25*X = 17, where X is the number of points each boy scores on average. Solving for X gives X = 14, so the boys average 14 points per game.

2. Answer: 192 days. There are 48 different combinations of ties and shirts (8 different ties for each of the 6 pairs of pants), and then four different shirts for each of these combinations. In numerical form: 8 x 6 x 4 = 192.

3. Answer: $357. John's base wage can be figured by multiplying his pay per hour by the number of hours he worked: $8.50 x 36 = 306. His bonus for oil changes is calculated by multiplying the payment per oil change by the number of oil changes performed: 17 x 3 = 51. These two products can then be added together.

4. Answer: 9 cm. Volume is calculated as the product of length, width, and height, so if height is set as Y: 6 x 7 x Y = 378. This can be rearranged to 378 / 42 = Y = 9.

5. Answer: 25. This kind of problem can be easily solved by simply finding the average of the two extremes in the range: (13 + 37) / 2 = 25.

6. Answer: 12 points.

7. Answer: No. Arnold will only save $10 by using the oil (.5 x (500 / 25)), and this is still $6 less than the cost of the oil.

Wonderlic Test

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wonderlic Personnel Test is a twelve-minute, fifty-question intelligence test used to assess the aptitude of prospective employees for learning and problem-solving in a wide range of occupations.[1] The score is calculated as the number of correct answers given in the allotted time. A score of 20 is intended to indicate average intelligence (corresponding to an intelligence quotient of 100; a rough conversion is accomplished via the following formula: IQ = 2WPT + 60). A new version was released in Jan, '07 called the Wonderlic Personnel Test - Revised. It contains questions deemed more appropriate to the 21st century.

Use in NFL

Though used in a wide variety of institutions, the Wonderlic test has become best known for its use in the NFL pre-draft assessments of prospective football players.

This assessment roughly corresponds to examples from Paul Zimmerman's The New Thinking Man's Guide to Pro Football. According to Zimmerman, examples of average scores for each position are:

Offensive tackle - 26
Center - 25
Quarterback - 24
Guard - 23
Tight end - 22
Safety - 19
Linebacker - 19
Cornerback - 18
Wide receiver - 17
Fullback - 17
Halfback - 16

Pat McInally, a graduate of Harvard University, is the only football player to record a confirmed perfect score of 50.[2] Ryan Fitzpatrick, also a Harvard graduate, had also been rumored to have scored a perfect 50 points in only nine minutes.[3] However, Fitzpatrick denied this, saying that he had left at least one of the 50 answer spaces blank.[4] The Wall Street Journal later reported that Fitzpatrick's actual score was 38 (still considered a 99th percentile or better score[5]), but that Fitzpatrick's claim of completing the Wonderlic in only nine minutes was accurate. Kevin Curtis is thought to have had the second highest Wonderlic score, at a 48.[1]

Vince Young's wonderlic score of 6 was leaked to the media and caused much controversy due to how low it was, sending his draft stock plummeting. There were many, oftentimes conflicting, rumors about how it had occurred, ranging from an "innaccurate" first testing, to his agent not informing Young about having to take the test. In the fallout, Young was allowed to retake the test, achieving a score of 16. The second test itself was questioned by some believing it was all just a coverup for the unprofessional leaking of the original and "true" score.

[Ryan Fitzpatrick didn't do too bad on a bad Bengals team this year, could it be that he is really smart and has good awareness?]

I think this stuff is important.

In my opinion the most important aspect of the upcoming combine stuff is without a doubt!!!!!!! 100%

The Interviews and the Wonderlick!

If they can't speak or can't think, they cannot comprehend the complex game of professional football. I don't care how fast they are, or how high they can jump. Who cares if they run a 4.3; if they are running in the wrong direction.

After that we must solely rely on their college performances, not the combine drills.
