More Ramblings From The Old Chief

by Draft

In the aftermath of an entertaining finish to a mundane Super Bowl, I recall the Old Chief prediction: that either Casey Hampton or Santonio Holmes would be Super Bowl MVP. How did I know? First of all, I felt the Cards had given everything they had just to get to the Bowl. I thought they were out of gas. Secondly, I thought it would be difficult to pick either Hines Ward or Troy Polamalu with their injuries. Lastly, I did not think Big Ben would be consistent throughout the game, and that Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald would be on the losing side. Sometimes you are right — sometimes just lucky.

Congrats to our new coach, Todd Haley.  This is the key hiring in Scott Pioli’s tenure, just like the key to Haley’s tenure will be his choice of coordinators. Lets hope there is no one named Clancy as our defensive coordinator. Unfortunately, due to his late hiring, many excellent choices are already gone (Mike Nolan). Hopefully, the Three Musketeers — Clark Hunt, Haley and Pioli — will have the opportunity to draft a franchise player like Carl Peterson did with Derrick Thomas in his first draft.

Stop the nonsense about Michael Crabtree. Yes, he is a great college player, but didn’t we learn anything from Matt Millen and the Lions? Receivers are available every year, but without a line or a quarterback to throw to them they are not worth the investment of a No. 3 pick. Regardless of the position, the Chiefs must find a player that will be Pro Bowl-caliber player at that position for 8-10 years. Often that is an outstanding offensive lineman — see Joe Thomas, Brown, 2007, or Jake Long, Dolphins, 2008.

Lastly, is an appeal to the Chiefs fans for PATIENCE. The Three Musketeers have taken over a mess. Arrowhead is being rebuilt and the Chiefs have the youngest team in the league.  In addition, they have several problem areas which must be rectified — like Larry Johnson. We are likely to get nothing in return for him as a result of his tirades and trade demands. Also, Brian Waters and Tony Gonzalez have mentioned that they might possibly like a change of scenery. It will take several months to assemble a staff, analyze our current roster and size up free agency and the draft. Good Luck!!

447 - It doesn't stop with Miami. Given our division and the fact that, despite our record, we were nevertheless in enough games last season to win the division, the fact we are lacking no more than 5-6 key players, the fact that we now have a GM (and a coach) with strong talent credentials and a coach who presumably can take us to the next level all point to the expectation that there should be no excuses whatsoever for the Chiefs not winning a division title next season.

I always read CD man - just didn't recollect your quote. Even if there was some sort of subliminal thing going on, my enhancements and editorials all stand as novel art. No copyright infringements here. :)

I will also take that DD as an admission you're not reading Crane Damage or such a transgression wouldn't have occurred.

D, don't get your hopes up about a quick turn around. It doesn't happen very often and if you look at who the Dolphins played this year, (AFC West, NFC West) it might offer a better explanation to the quick turn around.

Lest we look at the suspicious "tuck rule" founded in the 2002 playoffs that just so happened to lead to the Patriots winning the first Super Bowl played after 9/11 as the country wrapped itself in an obedient, jingoistic ferver.

Lest we look at the offensive (pun intended) pass interference call against Seattle in the first quarter of SB XL, or the third and goal TD that never was but was called that way after review eventhough the entire Stealers sideline was agreeing that it would be overturned and 4th and goal would follow (Poloumalu even volunteered to carry it on 4th down). I guess that had nothing to do with selling the Jerome Bettis love-story/Detroit homecoming or giving the Chin his undeserved ring.

Lest we look at the phantom roughing the passer call in the third quarter of the most recent SB, or the running into the holder personal foul (a call I have never seen before and I challenge anyone to find a clip of such a call).

I'm afraid there is a considerable amount of suspicious calls out there in the superbowl, and SB XL was soo poorly officiated (the most singularly poorly officiated game I have ever viewed) that I have been recently led to beleive there might be something more than mere carelessness to it.

Don't mean to fuel the conspiracy fire, but the officials were calling in the Steelers favor. How else do you get 2 calls over turned. Officials are normally better then that.

The Draft is all rigged anyway.

Too many unpredictable factors to say exactly what the Chiefs will do next season but sure is entertaining to try.

Parallel thoughts acknowledged. Damn you're good.

Crabtree is too risky, not just because he's a wide receiver, but because he's a wide receiver coming from the Big 12. Sorry, but the Big 12 is the weakest conference when it comes to DBs and therefore its QBs and receivers are overrated. Here is a great proof of that point. And aside from that, we have pressing defensive needs and a uniquely qualified LB sitting there at as a safe good value pick.

As far as O-Line is concerned, I'm not interested in paying top 3 money for a RT or a G. It just doesn't make sense. Albert is working out great at LT and Pioli has a track record of being able to find the rest of the OL positions later in the draft (I wouldn't be opposed to trading back up into the later first round in order to snag a RT or C/G though).

C'mon DD you love you some Crane Damage...either that or those mind control glasses I got from Stewie are working :roll:

Me: "If the Dolphins can come back from a one-win season and make the playoffs with Ricky “Michael Phelps” Williams and Chad “Freakin” Pennington at QB then there is no reason the Chiefs — in a weak AFC West — can’t make the playoffs next year..."

You: If Miami can go 1-15 one season, then hire a new GM, new coach, gut the OL, let go of their best defensive player along with about half the rest of the team, bring in a bunch of new talent through FA and the draft, and then go 11-5 and make the playoffs then I see no good reason why we can’t at least do something comparable.

With the third pick:

WR= Risk

LB= Safe

OL= Safest

Pioli will go OL or LB. Can't afford to make a mistake. Can't wait to find out.

Crane, I quoted you from yesterday? If so, that was purely coincidental but hey whatever I can do to lift your karma bro . . . 8)

I agree with old Chief. Pass on Crab. What's with the mock drafts talking about Aaron Curry, OLB, Wake Forest as the third pick? I think I like it. After Derrick Thomas is the reason I became a Cheifs fan in the first place!

I love it when you quote me from the day before DD. Makes me feel good.

Yeah, what's up with Waters?

Alright Adam, guess "I'm yo huckleberra" yet again. Even though I like Crabtree a ton I tend to agree that his value would be limited without a good OL. There simply are more pressing needs. Unless FA can solve our multitude of holes, we will need to address either the front 7 or the OL with our first pick and then consider a deep threat WR (Heyward-Bey?) in the second or later rounds.

Old Chief,
Regarding patience, I guess mine now runs pretty thin. If Miami can go 1-15 one season, then hire a new GM, new coach, gut the OL, let go of their best defensive player along with about half the rest of the team, bring in a bunch of new talent through FA and the draft, and then go 11-5 and make the playoffs then I see no good reason why we can't at least do something comparable.

The Chiefs, talent-wise, are in much better shape coming off the 2008 season than Miami was coming off their 2007 season. I see no need or reason to kick off the Pioli/Haley era with excuses. I'm looking for results.

Oh and great post Old Chief. Don't worry, Wyatt is harmless unless you shoot his brothers.

Hadnt heard this about Waters either, we need more info.

Actually the line in the movie Adam is "You tell'em I'm comin and hell's comin with me. You hear, HELL'S COMIN WITH ME!"

Old chief has hit the nail on the head. No Crabtree
wide receivers do not win championships. We need beef up front then we can worry about the diva types. I would like to say also than while I am new here. I find that I agree with Adam more times than not. Keep up the good work.

I agree on the no crabtree thing, OT is the safest pick and OT's tend not to have the swollen ego-itis once they have a 200 yard 3 TD day.

No Crabtree....hopfully that makes me a cool cowboy and not some lame-o Ike Clanton nonsense...

I'm sure the old man heard it on the radio -- he's surgically attached to that thing. I think he might have even done the operation himself.

Old Chief, you're a marked man. Everyone knows the risk of coming at Michael Crabtree on the Addict. I'm Wyatt Earp and you have a red sash around your neck.

I'm coming...and hell's coming with me. HELL'S COMING WITH ME!"

Let's see, marking this one down...Old Chief - No Crabtree.

Old Chief,

I have not heard a thing about Waters, can we get some details?
