Chiefs Granted Permission To Meet With Todd Haley

Well, Chan Gailey supporters, I’m sure it’s been a fun ride for you. Unfortunately, like with every other daydream, you eventually have to wake up and come back to the real world. Scott Pioli and the Chiefs have received permission from the Cardinals to speak with Todd Haley, their offensive coordinator . From Red Zone:

The Chiefs have received permission from the Arizona Cardinals to interview Todd Haley for their head coaching vacancy, sources said.

It was unclear when or where the meeting between Haley and Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli will take place…

Music to my ears. All we need is a Rooney Rule candidate. I wish we could interview Leslie Frazier and make him associate head coach along with defensive coordinator, but I’m not sure that has any chance of happening. Kind of a lateral move for him when he’s close to being a head coach. Same with Ron Rivera. With Winston Moss not yet a coordinator, maybe we could pull off that trick with him? It’s a thought.

Stay tuned for more news on the seemingly imminent Haley hiring. Big thanks to long-time reader Jeremy for posting this in the comments so quickly.

Some good discussion has been going on. Been a while since I weighed in so here goes:

Right or wrong and in my opinion, I do expect Haley to be hired as HC and his role will be to execute Pioli's vision for re-establishing the identity of the Chiefs. Regardless of what the vision is, it will be a collaboration between the HC and Pioli. To bring about that change will require cleaning house of the current coaching staff including Gailey. I don't know about the scouting department yet. Pioli and Haley will want to make sure there is no carry-over from the Herm Edwards era. This is not a dig at Gailey but more of the approach they will take to get all players on the same page

Grimm followed Haley from Pittsburg to Arizona and may follow him again.

This is just my gut feeling. I have no supporting evidence other than patterns from Pioli's mentor and father-in-law

Haley HC
Gailey OC
Romeo Crennel DC

Not exactly sure what Haley brings to the equation but having Gailey and Crennel as coords could be kick-ass. At this point, I'm beginning to lean a little more towards either Frazier or Grimm for HC.

Why is everyone jumping to the conclusion that Boldin is the prima donna but not Haley? When Haley had his run in with T.O., the Cowboys were on the verge of disciplining Haley for that blow-up, not T.O. In so many words, T.O. made it sound as though Haley was somebody not to be trusted. Perhaps there is another dimension to Haley, a pattern of confrontational behavior perhaps, back-stabbing, whatever, that we're not fully appreciating?

Sorry for the name change, after Saturday's whoopin' I figure it's better to hide under a different alias.

DD-My comment wasn't meant to come across as a man-crush on Haley, my main point was that I'm down for fresh, new blood, regardless of who the guy would be. We've seen first hand what former HC's do, I'm just ready to roll the dice with a rookie HC.

4 - watch our running game go from 16th back down to 32nd.

But hey, what I do know? I'm just the local idiot apparently.

Vrod, thanks for having my back.

Good Point BJ Penn.

How is Hawaii? lol

Profootballtalk has some good threads on the Chiefs today

Haley Interviewing

Hunt said Rooney Rule already satisfied.

BJ - what I mean by glorified receivers coach is that that is the only side of offensive coaching he has ever shown. Nobody had diddly to say about the guy for 2 nearly years, all of a sudden he has this one month mercurial run primarily on the backs of Warner, Fitzgerald, and Boldin and all of Chiefs Nation starts having wet dreams about the guy? Have you checked out how the Cards running game has faired since he took over?

If, as most people apparently believe, Haley is to be our next HC, shouldn't we be at least a little bit concerned about what will happen to our running game? Everybody riding this Haley craze seems to believe he will restore some kind of Vermeilesque offense-first approach to the Chiefs. Seems to me though that Vermeil found his greatest success not through the air, but on the ground. It sure looks to me that Haley is all air and I'm not so sure that will fly (excuse the pun) in the AFC West. Somebody tell me where I'm wrong on this?

WarPaint Illustrated says:

Haley HC
Gailey OC
Romeo Crennel DC

To Double D's credit, (even though I want Haley), Haley was not even considered for any other coaching job (Jets, Raiders, Rams, Bucs, Detroit, Browns). His name was not even mentioned until he was in an argument with Boldin and they won the NFC Championship.

However, I do not beleive a re-tread is the way to go. I want an successful coordinator, who can control some of the primadonnas on our team. Sounds like Haley to me.

We will find out by the end of this week (Friday).

Snead,

Woody is right. Calling DD an idiot is like putting an elevator in an out-house, it doesn't belong. What happened to the friendly banter?

I've got to say that I'm down for this. I'm getting sick and tired of teams bringing out the same old dog and pony show. Teams consistantly bring back retread coaches, almost like "Well, it didn't work the first time, but I've got a feeling we can make it work HERE." Teams are scared to take gambles on coaches that don't necessarily have that "name" quality going for them, chicken sh!t stuff. Every head coach at some point was a "glorified" something.

John Harbaugh-Freaking Special Teams Coach
Tony Sparano-Offensive Line Coach
Andy Reid-Offensive Line/QB Coach
Tom Coughlin-Wide Receivers Coach (Before BC HC)

Looking at recent trends, it seems to me that you can do better with a FIRST time head coach, than just bringing back some other teams scraps.

1-hire haley
2-keep thiggy as the starter
3-draft crabtree with the 3rd overall pick

We promoted Solari, what is exactly what we would be doing with Chan.

People didn't we try keeping the current OC with a new coach? and how well did that work?

Don't call me a Chan hater, I never asked Chan out for drinks, but I do agree that he was not impressive as a head coach either in college or the pro game.

Adam:

So, Solari didn't work, so Chan can't work? Is that your point?

Snead and Merlin,

Good points. I actually would love it if Chan was the OC with Haley or whomever is the HC. Like I said before, not against Haley, but I am not sure he has done "enough" at this point. Maybe he needs another couple of years as an OC/AHC before taking on the responsibility. I cannot say, I cannot read his mind. Would love to see what he would do with the Cards if he doesn't take the HC job of our Chiefs. You have to think of this too. His Cards just got beat in the SB. Did you ever stop to think he might actually want to return next year and go for winning it all, if they can get that far again?

And comparing Gailey to Solari is like comparing Pioli to Matt Millen.....HORRIBLE!!!

Zach,

Two years as HC and appeared in the playoffs and did not win, but you aren't impressed? How many times did Shanahan, Cowher, Tomlin, Coughlin, even our great Hank Stram, go to the playoffs and NOT win it all. It took Cowher, what, 13 years to win the SB. Chan took a 6-10 team to the playoffs two years in a row. Having said that, I do want a coach that can go ALL THE WAY! I am done with the Marty years of going and losing the first game almost every time. Except the 1 year we went to the AFC Championship and got our peckers wacked by those Loser Bills on their run of three or four SB losses.

Oh yeah and quit accusing me of wanting Chan as the HC. Never said that. All I said was if Pioli picked him, I would not be as sore as him picking up Shanahan or, gulp, Millen...HA, sorry had to laugh at that one.

Exactly, Woody.

And we're just passionate about our Chiefs and don't want to see them continue to blow. The case I've laid out tells me Haley will be the better choice. My gut tells me that Gailey would be a disaster. The players probably wouldn't rally behind him, the city definitely wouldn't, and he's just never been what I would label a winner. The people vouching for him are acting like he's Bill Cowher or Bill Walsh reincarnated something. Gailey is just another retread.

He's Plain Jane, Mr. Mediocre, 10-6 at best if youre' lucky. We know what he is. Why don't why go after the next Tomlin type and try to be great?

I have nothing against Chan as a person, it just infuriates me that a quarter of Chiefs Nation thinks he's the answer. There's no way in hell he is the answer.

And Herm deserved everything he got here at A.A. He destroyed our once proud franchise.

I dont hate Gailey at all...I want him to stay on and be OC...

But I dont like people embellishing what he has done to argue FOR him...

Weren't the Cowboys 6-10 the season before Gailey took over? Wow. I thought Herm was hated by the main guys on this site, but this is bad. Did Chan turn you guys down for drinks or something? Sheesh! I have not heard one football analyst say anything bad about Chan. When he was hired last year by Herm all I ever heard were good stats and such. Must have been dreaming again.

Gailey did not "significantly improve" the Cowboys in his two years...he took the leftovers of a dynasty and did less than was expected of him....

There is no appeasement in Pioli's style whatsoever....It is the real deal....

I will say, however that we dont yet know who all he has talked to already....

I love that idea of Winston Moss as DC....good call Best

He had Troy Aikman at quarterback and Jerry Jones' bankrolling the team. The Cowboys were just a dynasty a few years before. He couldn't turn it around enough, apparently. Regardless of what Jerry says, he fired him. If it was a Mike Shanahan fire -- on where the rest of the league thought it was stupid -- he would have got another head coaching job in th epast 10 years.

Double D, maybe you should be this guy's agent. He's most likely going to be looking for a new job soon, so...?

I love how about 7-8 out of every 10 Chiefs fans prefer Haley to Gailey, and you are telling the masses to get a sanity check. Then there's the media. Nobody out there is calling for Gailey. Well, maybe Whitlock as his fourth option I think, after Cowher, Parcells and Haley. The Gailey backers are the ones who sound delusional, not vice versa.

We're wasting far too much time on a guy who won't be our head coach and probably won't ever be an NFL head coach again.

All Haley has proven is that he is a glorified receivers coach.

In the mere 2 years that Gailey was an NFL HC, he significantly improved his team on both sides of the ball and got them into the playoffs both times. In what frikkin' universe can that ever be considered "less than impressive results!?"

Sanity check please!!!

By the way, I love how Haley calls one of the best game-winning drives in NFC CC history and then one of the best offensive quarters in the fourth in the Super Bowl, and DD calls him a glorified receivers coach. That's my parting shot for now...

I can't wait till Haley is our coach and Gailey remains offensive coordinator, he did wonders to our terrible offense. Pioli is a genius. Double D you're an idiot.

they already fullfilled the rooney rule.they made calls to several they were turned down by them,so by rule, the rule is satisfied since they reached out

Yeah either that or Pioli already knows Haley really well and what he is capable of. Would you seriously rather have Gailey? He has been a HC before with less than impressive results. He did a good job making chicken salad out of chicken shit, but we all know that some guys are meant to be coordinators. We don't know if Haley could be an upgrade, but life is all about making the best of golden opportunities. I'm thinking Clark and Pioli are willing to see if Haley can get the job done. I'm thinking he can, but it doesn't matter what I or any of us think....

And I like the Winston Moss thought, too. Actually just came up with that today. Beam him down (from Green Bay), Scotty.

And, no, I don't believe we have satisfied the Rooney Rule.

Personal attack....not cool...

Last I checked, Gailey was still on the payroll and was still not being allowed to interview elsewhere. This Toddler interview is probably just window dressing to appease all those afflicted with Mass Haleysteria. Pioli probably figures he has to come up with some way of keeping all you crazies in the fold.

Hell, considering how much worse their running game has gotten with Haley at the helm, the Cards are probably jumping for joy at the prospect of being able to offload Haley. Hopefully Pioli sends him back with the word "psych" taped to the back of his shirt.
