I’m in shock still. I think I’m gonna throw up!

So happy, I can finally throw my FIRE HERM toilet seat in the trash where it belongs. Its been hanging from my truck hitch for weeks.

  5. 5. Eric Crane Says:

I wonder if we have Parcells up our sleeve?
It looks like Hayley is the guy, but I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Shanny either.

  6. 6. danielpapi Says:

Great move, stupid timing this should of been done the first day pioli got the job not wait until every good coach is gone

  7. 7. mguilicutty Says:

There are plenty of good coaches around. I assume given the timing it’s going to be Hayley. Please no donkey face. Goodbye Herm, thanks for taking the bullet for us. Best of luck elsewhere.

  8. 8. Double D Says:

Though I thougt Edwards did about as good a job as anyone could have under the circumstances, ultimately I feel he was in a no-win situation once Peterson was gone. So I must say I’m glad this chapter has at least come to a close and that he and the rest of us can now move on. Based on how the Chiefs are handling Gailey, I will say I think he has to at least considered as in the mix for the HC job.

REPORT: CHIEFS NEAR DEAL WITH SHANAHAN
Posted by Mike Florio on January 23, 2009, 5:19 p.m.
On the same day that a former Broncos coach made a big stir by unexpectedly arising as a candidate for offensive coordinator in San Fran, another former Broncos coach is also potentially resurfacing in an unexpected place.

On Thursday, we pointed out that there were increasing rumors and reports of the Chiefs possibly hiring former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan.

The rumors and reports were knocked down in various circles.

Now, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that the Chiefs are close to a deal with Shanahan.

    Wow.

    More to come.

  10. 10. Gump Says:

    D

I agree, Gun is gone, Herm is gone but no news of any kind about Gailey?? No other teams want to talk to him? No speculation that he will be let go??? Could be the new HC.

But if so why wouldn’t that have been part of this announcement?

  11. 11. Gump Says:

I could live with Shanny, or at least I could get used to it.

  12. 12. Double D Says:

Something tells me it’s not going to be Haley. I have to think the only conceivable reason why Pioli would have strung Edwards along all this time is because he had not yet lined up his replacement. This move tells me he has who he wants and that it’s not Haley. Why do I say that? Because Haley is not on the market until after the Superbowl so how could Pioli have gotten a commitment from him without violating league rules?
It’s somebody else I’m telling you and my best guess is that it’s Chan Gailey.

  13. 13. Double D Says:

As far as Shanny goes, as I said yesterday, I’ll believe it when I see it. Very hard for me to see how Shanny fits this team/city as it’s next head coach. That’s about 2 steps backwards in terms of where we are in the rebuilding – among other things, it would make the 2008 draft an almost complete waste of time and money. It’s even harder for me to see how Pioli’s organizational philosophy matches up with Shanahan’s. Sorry, I see Dallas as the ideal fit for Shanahan.

  14. 14. Whir Says:

I think Shanahan would be a good hire, and Gailey would be good as OC still. Shanahan likes Gailey too …

  15. 15. Jeremy_Riverside_CA Says:

I agree dd, I can’t see Shanny and Pioli together. Stranger things have happened.

As for Haley, all it takes is a phone call and a wink of an eye.

    Maybe it is Gailey too?

WHO KNOWS!!!!!!!!! THIS IS FREAKING AWESOME! lol

  16. 16. Eric Crane Says:

How does Shanahan make the 08 draft a complete waste?

  17. 17. the hammer formerly known as g.l. Says:

HALLELUJAH!!!!!!!!!AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!Adios, muchaco, don’t let the door hit you in the ass and best of luck to you!!!!!!!!!

    Brian Billick anyone? hmmm…

MORT AND SCHEFTER DUEL OVER REPORTS OF SHANAHAN TO CHIEFS
Posted by Mike Florio on January 23, 2009, 5:48 p.m.
    This is getting pretty good.

Two of the top NFL information men in the business are engaged in a duel regarding the question of whether the Kansas City Chiefs are talking to former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan regarding the possibility of replacing former Chiefs coach Herm Edwards.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that the Chiefs and Shanahan are closing in on a deal.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reported on Thursday, and has reiterated today, that the Chiefs have made no contact with Shanahan.

“[U]nless people I have known for years are blatantly lying to me, Shanahan is not going to be the next head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs,” Schefter writes. “It is not happening. People can keep talking as if it is. But it is not. He will not be the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2009.”

    Pistols or swords, gentlemen?

  22. 22. Vrod74-MikeSD Says:

Well at least the Herm haters are happy. Everyone prepare to say goodbye to the best TE in NFL history. Can’t blame him though. He wants a ring and won’t come anywhere near it next year now that the team is starting over, AGAIN! I hope everyone is ready for ANOTHER 2-4 win season. With a new schemes all over the place the rebuilding begins. You should all be careful what you wish for, you might get it. Hope this works out for the team.

  23. 23. Jeremy_Riverside_CA Says:

    Rooney Rule?

  24. 24. BucktheFroncos Says:

Of course if Shanny has less to do with Personel and can focus on coaching it may be a sweet mix. I’m so torn and confused. And if they take Sanchez at 3? WTF????

  25. 25. Double D Says:

    Crane,

Okay – I might be exaggerating a bit because it’s hard to predict any given player’s ability to adapt to a new system.

My first assumption (perhaps a bad one) is that Shanny would want to implement a ZBS – we have the wrong guys on the OL for that – the other side of that is that it would be best argument yet for keeping LJ.

Secondly, I’ve got to wonder what Shanny would do about/with our DL. The days of the Orange Crush are long gone. Seems to me Shanahan emphasizes lighter, quicker guys – something we’re not really stacked in.

In general, I feel Shanny prefers speed and agility over size and physicality. In other words, the complete opposite of how we drafted last season.

  26. 26. Jeremy_Riverside_CA Says:

HALEY HALEY HALEY HALEY HALEY HALEY!!!!!

    GAILEY GAILEY GAILEY GAILEY!!!!!!

OK, OFFICIALLY I cannot work anymore for the rest of the day!!! lol.

  27. 27. Double D Says:

Didn’t Schefter recently colloborate with Shanahan on a book or something? If so, I would imagine that Schefters might have the better pipeline on this one.

  28. 28. Chiefs447 Says:

Herm was kept this whole time so Pioli could use him for information about the team, their game plans, and the players. He wanted to know what was asked of the players and why they were not successful under his watch. Once Pioli knew everything there was to know from Edwards and other assistants, he cut ‘em loose. D, I wouldn’t worry about Shanahan ruining our draft because I doubt Pioli is gonna let anyone have a hand in his work. Pioli’s not gonna hire someone who isn’t on the same page as his.

  29. 29. Chiefs447 Says:

Roony Rule can go suck a pickel. What a joke.

  30. 30. Scott Says:

Hell yeah! Finally! This is as good or better than when the King got canned. I can finally see light at the end of the tunnel! No more ridiculous decisions that give up games. No more moronic press conferences about players not executing.

This is awesome. For those of you that think we’re starting over…who cares? We have the talent to have won several more games this year, Harm just couldn’t get it done. Do you honestly believe that he could have won more than 4 next year? Please. We’ll have more wins next season than Herm’s last two combined. It doesn’t matter who replaces him, it’s an instant upgrade!

And now the new era begins…

    GO CHIEFS!!!

  31. 31. Scott Says:

Wow! Gonzo JUST did a live interview on ESPN. He said he would have no problem with Shanahan coming in and he thinks that Pioli can really turn the organization around quickly. He said as of right now he’s a Chief and isn’t going anywhere. He said if they pick up some key free agents and the young guys work hard to improve that he’s definitely on board and would love to end his career as a Chief. Nice!

  32. 32. Jeremy_Riverside_CA Says:

    GONZO!!!!!!!

  33. 33. Jeremy_Riverside_CA Says:

Kansas City and Oakland are the only two teams still looking for a head coach.

  34. 34. woody Says:

It is too bad Shanahan isnt coming here….

ESPN is losing alot of respect on this deal….

Schefter reports it as fact…and he would know….

Todd Haley = the next Sean Payton to me…which is good

  35. 35. kingpin Says:

I can breathe. The man impersonating a coach is gone. I wish him well. No Shanahan. His team collaped this year and I believe that was the case 3 years ago. Do we want that chop blocking guy here. I would have a hard time rooting for him. Listen people he the stinking bronco’s former coach. How could go from dislike to like with all we went trough with this guy. The new coaching pick will be interesting. Man and son at Chief’s game. Son says to dad. We lost with Vermeil, but at least we weren’t boring. True story boy was 7 years old. That sums up Herm.

  36. 36. doc Says:

Always fire someone on a Friday.

  37. 37. woody Says:

You know what that makes me think of….

“Damn it feels good to be a gangsta….”

    haha…

“PC Load Letter?!….WHAT THE F*CK DOES THAT MEAN!?!?”

  38. 38. sgt_ducttape Says:

I can’t believe it! I watched as bits and pieces of our coaching staff were pulled away to other teams and Herm remained. Each day that herm didn’t get canned was like slow death thinking Pioli might actually keep him. BUT NOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! HAHAHA!

I’m also siding against the fonkeyducker. We don’t need no stinking Shantyman! Let the cries begin! HALEY! HALEY! HALEY!

  39. 39. sgt_ducttape Says:

Na na na na hey hey GOODBYE!

  40. 40. woody Says:

Get over the anti Shanny stuff….

Its silliness to me if you cant get over him being the FORMER coach of a certain team then…silliness

  41. 41. tim Says:

    NO HALEY AND NO SHANAHAN!!!!

WE NEED A DEFINSIVE MINDED COACH. OUR OFFENSE IS FINE. IM SICK OF THE VERMEIL ERA STILL LINGERING!!!!!

We need to stop with this offence minded football. For a good 7 years we have been losing because of our defense, not our offense. If we want to win a championship we need a fantastic defense and an offense that gets the job done. Example, Giants, Ravens, Steelers, Eagles. ect.ect.

If we draft an offensive guy, im going to be pissed off. I would rather of kept herm than bring in an offensive “genuis”.

  42. 42. sgt_ducttape Says:

    Tim,
You called it, so who do you want with that defensive mind for the new coach? I’m just curious, of who’s available, who would be your pick and why.

It’s fun to watch them score at will and all over the place, but if you can’t stop the other guys, then one hiccup and you lose the horse race. So I would also like to see our defense improve (can’t get much worse) and who you think can do it.

  43. 43. Chiefs447 Says:

    Ron Rivera

  44. 44. woody Says:

Romeo Crennel is available for HC or DC…

I know I will get crap for that…but Cleveland is not entirely his fault…Not even mostly…

If we get Haley I still want Crennel as DC…He knows Pioli and the Patriots Way…

  46. 46. snead101 Says:

Wow, I was so excited when I heard the news that i sent a text message to my brother. My blackberry has the “smart texting” or whatever it’s called and I typed in “Herm Edwards was fired” , when I looked down at my phone, my phone which is obviously very smart had typed in “Germ Edwards was fired”. Wow, even my phone hated Herm.

  47. 47. tim Says:

    sgt_ducttape,
i dont really know the rules or precedure for taking other teams Co-ordinators so im just going to throw out some names that i would like.

Jim Johnson – Eagles – Knows how to blitz well, use safeties effectively and would really take advantage of our speedy linebackers. Would instantly turn around the defense as we would be getting sacks under his coaching.

Leslie Frazier – Vikings – Knows how to stop the run very effectively. Sure he has 2 very good tackles in the Williams’ but he should be able to take his expertise to use Tyler and Dorsey to their full potentials. He can take advantage of our DLINE and craft a really good front seven. Again another immediate impact to the defence.

Bill Belichick – Pats – I have a man crush for big bill. :P

Jeff Fisher – Titans – He looks and sounds exactly like detective Goran from Law and order. He can always solve a problem. Ei. Who murdered our defense?

But honestly, as long as we get a great Def Co-ordinator i will be happy.

  48. 48. sgt_ducttape Says:

Wow Tim, no holding you back! 2 very winning, long term contracted head coaches on your list. But if ya gotta wish, wish big!?!

While we couldn’t do much worse than we have been doing, the laundry list of who we wouldn’t want is immense. My concern is the “whos available” list. I want a home run (more wishing?). We have Pioli, and who might find working here as being attractive is interesting. On the downside, so much time has passed that some great choices are gone already.

If we were able to get Haley, that doesn’t mean we care less about defense. With Pioli and Haley and C. Hunt I think we could be even more attractive to a great DC. There is a huge upside to coming here for a HC and DC. We have an fairly new, eager owner and GM. Our roster is not loaded with aged veterans. We have cap room and great draft spots coming up. Not to mention the stadium, fans, and “The Chiefs Experience” to become a part of.

I can’t help but wonder if there is an up and coming D Asst. out there looking to make a name for himself that would jump at the chance to come here. Pioli is stepping up to full GM. Haley would be stepping up. Who else would relish that opportunity?

  49. 49. sgt_ducttape Says:

I do agree that I don’t want Shanahan. I remember when he traded for nearly the whole defensive line of the Browns. Shanny can go to Dallas as far as I’m concerned. Maybe Al Davis will pay him the $250 he owes him and bring him back to Oakland. HAHAHA!
