Talking Haley Over On FOX

by Rumors

In my latest over on FOX Sports, I rave about Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley. Since he has been linked to the Chiefs job, I figured this was relevant. That is, unless there is any truth to this Mike Shanahan rumor. From FOX Sports:

Another Cards up-and-comer, offensive coordinator Todd Haley, has been equally impressive.

Haley’s transformed the 32nd-ranked rushing attack into a potent weapon. He’s resuscitated Edgerrin James, who just months ago seemed destined for the running back retirement home. He’s helped Kurt Warner protect the football, a miraculous feat considering Warner’s history. Most of all, he’s been the mastermind behind Fitzgerald’s record-breaking run. Even with Anquan Boldin hobbled and defenses keying on Fitz, Haley has found ways to get No. 11 the ball.

What impressed me most about Haley’s performance this past Sunday was the seven-minute, game-winning drive he devised. There was his gutsy fourth-and-1 call to keep it on the ground, even though Tim Hightower had just been stopped short on third-and-1. Hightower converted easily. There was Haley finding ways to get Fitzgerald the ball again after he had been shut out for the half. Then there was that genius third-and-8 call — an unexpected halfback screen to Hightower — that scored the go-ahead touchdown. The most impressive aspect of Haley’s drive, however, was his ability to deliver it with Boldin going all T.O. on him.

This, along with Haley and Co. completely obliterating the Panthers defense on the road, is why I am so high on Haley. It also doesn’t hurt that both Bill Parcells and Scott Pioli sign off on the guy. Plus, dude kinda resembles Bruce Willis. Maybe he could make our AFC West rivals finally Die Hard?

Adam, I've got one more point to make on this. One thing I've been hearing about the situation in Arizona is that Warner has Haley's ear. In other words, Warner has just a little bit to do with Haley looking really smart all of a sudden.

Adam @ 11 - if Fitz, Boldin and Haley were the reason then Leinart would be the one taking the steps next Sunday.

Okay, maybe more than one thing to add . . .

Rumors continue to swirl in Kansas City
Posted: January 22nd, 2009 | Adam Schefter | Tags: Chan Gailey, Kansas City Chiefs, Scott Pioli

With Kansas City on information lockdown in regards to what it is doing at head coach, there are only educated guesses as to what the Chiefs might do.

Here is another.

Kansas City could wind up interviewing its offensive coordinator, Chan Gailey, for its head coaching job.

How’s this? For starters, Chiefs owner Clark Hunt is an unabashed Gailey admirer. Hunt knows the type of outstanding job Gailey did this past season with Tyler Thigpen and the rest of the Chiefs offense. Hunt would have no problem with Gailey coaching his team, though Hunt also has been a proponent of Herman Edwards staying.

Ultimately, the decision belongs to new Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli — and he has been dead-rock silent on the subject, so no one knows what he is thinking.

But consider this: the Chiefs denied the Buccaneers the chance to interview Gailey for Tampa Bay’s vacant offensive coordinator job, according to a Kansas City source. If the Chiefs didn’t want Gailey to go, clearly there were some within the organization who wanted him to stay.

Also, at least one team involved in a head-coaching search said it had Gailey on its list of candidates, and other teams with head coaching openings might have as well.

Hiring Gailey would be to go against the grain in an offseason when teams have coveted coaching youth. But it would make sense. Pioli would like a veteran presence to run his team, and Gailey has the respect of many.

It doesn’t mean that Gailey will wind up being the Chiefs next head coach. But it does mean that when speculation about the Chiefs’ next move continues to run rampant, Gailey should be included in the conversation.

I am out here in Los Angeles and am starving for info. Did I miss Herm getting fired or is he still the HC? Who from the Chiefs attended the North/South Game and who is scouting the Senior Bowl?

As long as Herm is still in the mix, I think likely he'll be there next year. I am still hopeful Pioli will put his stamp on this franchise by letting "Harm" go but before we jump on his replacement, I think we need to give Pioli another week.

Agree on all accounts that Haley seems to do a great job of mixing it up and he has balls of steel going for that Hightower sweep on 4th down. Great game.

The more I look at this the more I like Haley. Although we need to fix the D, that doesn't mean we have to get a defensive minded HC. It just means that we need a Defensive Coordinator that can fix what ails our D. (Which is LineBackers and one good passs rushing DE).

I'm liking the Haley idea more and more.

And he gives us the potential to have a coach-GM-owner team that could make beautiful music together for a long time. Maybe even a decade or longer, if things work out. Great points, kcdan58.

How do we know if it was Shanny or Elway, Holmgren or Farve, Dungy or Manning. How many playoff games has Bellicek won without Brady and visa versa. (or even been in) My point is that we don't know. But I think Haley matches the culture of the team he would coach here. Young and up-and-coming. I'd rather have a coach on the way up than on the way down.

Double D,

Who's to say it's not Boldin, Fitzgerald and Haley who are completely responsible for Warner's resurgence? He was a benchwarming mentor in NYC before they got a hold of him.

And I'm sick of a coach who coddles these guys. We need a boss -- not a buddy.

I've seen screens work for the Jags and Patriots on third down all the time. It's just that Herm is so effing predictable.

Fellas, the difference is that Haley uses these plays when they are unexpected, when the defense is totally keying on Fitz. Typically, he would go another way, which is why they worked. Herm does that sh** every single time, which is why it doesn't work. Thanks for playing, though :)

(You thought I was going to take that lying down? Still got love for you guys, though!)

Just because you tout the Bible doesn't mean you can't be a dick or at least a prima donna. Warner is neither, but sometimes the guy does get emotional on the sidelines.

genius third-and-8 call? screen? my god adam, that play works 1/10 times. you have been all over herm about his screens on 3 and long. haley got lucky on that call. thank god warner never audibles or that play would have never happened. he took a chance and got lucky. not knocking haley, just saying it was a questionable call that worked out. keep doing what you do

Kurt and him get along great. They do get animated, but it isn't out of dislike. If it anything it may be because they are so close. Kurt made a joke the other day that his wife accuses him of having an affair with Haley because they spend so much time together.

I've heard players do not get along with him very well and it's not just T.O. (from when he was in Dallas) or Boldin. Kurt Warner has been seen getting into a yelling match with this guy. Now I'm not saying he wouldn't be a good HC, but when Bible beatin Kurt Warner gets in your face it makes me wonder. Any thoughts?

His gutsy 4th and 1 call to keep it on the ground? Adam, you have got to be kidding me! Herm makes that call, we don't make it and you are all over him for being too conservative. Haley makes that call and he is 'gutsy'. I think you are being a bit hypocritical here.

Yea D you might be right . But could you see him jumping in LJ's face and ripping him up . Hell he might start to run again.
I belive young coach is what we need for a long haul

One question - if Matt Leinart was the only choice the Cards had at QB, would we even be talking about this guy? Call me skeptical but I have to believe that the Cards late season success has at least as much to do who's taking snaps as it does with who's holding the playbook over on the sideline.
