BREAKING: Holy Pioli! Scott Pioli Accepts Chiefs GM Job!
Just got this scoop from Michael Lombardi’s National Football Post e-mailed to me. Halle-effin’-lujah!
Sources close to the National Football Post have just informed us that former New England Patriots Vice President of Player Personnel Scott Pioli has agreed to become the next General Manager of the Kansas City Chiefs. Pioli won the George Young NFL Executive of the Year award in 2004 and 2005. He will be replacing Carl Peterson.
ESPN is now reporting this, too (hat tip: Arrowhead Pride).

“I can see clearly now the rain is gone…”
January 13th, 2009 at 3:47 pmYou know it’s been a bad season when the most exciting thing to happen between training camp and the Super Bowl is the hiring of a new GM. With that said…
YYYYEEEESSSSS!!!!
January 13th, 2009 at 3:52 pmLet the house cleaning begin…
January 13th, 2009 at 3:57 pmWOW almost the best day in the last couple of years(carl gone is #1) Herm dont let that door knock you out
January 13th, 2009 at 3:58 pmOK, now what….. All the Herm haters are now dancing in the streets, the Cassell, “Spags” as Coach rumors begin to fly…..be careful what you wish for – you might just get it. I believe Herm should come back. If it doesnt work, go get “The Chin”. But please, stay the hell away from Marty, Fassel,”The Ferret” ( Shanahan ) and Jerrys kid, Jason Garrett.
January 13th, 2009 at 4:01 pmTo me, this is better than Carl being gone. We got a once-in-a-decade GM candidate and now Herm is likely toast. To me, Herm is far worse than the King without a crown.
January 13th, 2009 at 4:01 pmoh happy day OH HAPPPPY DAAAAAY
January 13th, 2009 at 4:02 pmDAMN, there is nobody in my office to hug!!
January 13th, 2009 at 4:03 pmThis is absolute great news….. Assuming Herm is gone, who is the likely Head Coach? Any ties to Rex Ryan????
January 13th, 2009 at 4:04 pmthis is a serious question – how long do you think it will be until herm will be fired?
January 13th, 2009 at 4:04 pm….and is Bill Cowher listening????
January 13th, 2009 at 4:04 pmFirst question at the Press Conference will be about the future of Herm. I assume there will be an answer
January 13th, 2009 at 4:05 pmId take Ryan over Spags, any day.
January 13th, 2009 at 4:05 pmDon’t start the Cassel rumors just yet. There’s been a report that the Pats are planning to Franchise Cassel.
January 13th, 2009 at 4:06 pm“We all know by now that Hunt moves with the speed of a Special Olympics hurdler when it comes to personnel moves.”
I guess clark shed the braces and became Forrest Gump!!! As far as coaches, I like Rex Ryan. If he can bring 10% of what he has in Baltimore that would be a huge upgrade. Plus suggs is a free agent that he can bring in!
January 13th, 2009 at 4:07 pmI’d trade LJ for Cassel. Hell, I’d trade LJ for a bag of chips, at this point.
January 13th, 2009 at 4:09 pmGLORIOUS DAY!
January 13th, 2009 at 4:11 pmYEA BABY….
That is the best news to wake up to….(from a nap of course…)
Adios Herm….you might have to find another large structure to run the steps of….you are history…go coordinate something…
January 13th, 2009 at 4:15 pmYou have to give it up to Clark, across the board. He has done things right since he took over the team. Not flashy. Not sexy. Right.
Every move that has been made on his watch has been applauded by football people.
-Tearing down an old team and building with rookies though it meant sacrificing a season.
-Collecting draft picks for your best player that couldn’t help you
-A draft that every pundit applauded
-Loyalty to his staff until they prove that they can’t do the job.
-A quiet behind the scenes GM search that landed the hottest GM prospect of the last 5 years.
Not all of the moves have worked out, in fact some of them blew up spectacularly this year. But, everyone has agreed that the Chiefs are making all the right moves on Clark’s watch. I don’t know if you could ask for more from an owner than this.
Thank you Clark.
January 13th, 2009 at 4:15 pmLet the FA spree begin! I haven’t been this excited since Montana beat the Oilers
January 13th, 2009 at 4:19 pmAs far as coaches go, I would think KC just jumped to the head of the pack by getting Pioli. But now recruiting Coaches without knowing whats on our new GM’s mind, I offer the following for consideration:
1. 8-8 won the division this year. SD is showing signs of wear, Denver is in transition and Oakland is, well, Oakland
2. We have a young foundation to build on but QB will now be given highest of priority either in Free Agency or the Draft
3. Our fan base is noted throughout the league
4. We don’t have an owner who likes to meddle(much!)
All of these points are strong arguements for us to get one of the best coaches available.
January 13th, 2009 at 4:20 pmThis is good news for sure (I think/hope) but here’s a question for all of you to ponder. Assuming Pioli wants to bring in a new head coach (and just for the record, I assume he does) but whoever it is he wants/like isn’t currently available? Whatever our personal preferences might be, it is a bit unrealistic to expect this move to bring about instant change much less instant success. We’re talking about turning around an aircraft carrier here folks.
January 13th, 2009 at 4:21 pmDouble D
Good Point but I like our chances of making some immediate impact with personnel choices. That was something we haven’t had in the recent past.
January 13th, 2009 at 4:26 pmDoubleD:
I don’t think it’s a Air Craft Carrier. The talent is there to win more games. If the Chiefs could have finished a game they should have won 6 this year. With a year under their belts, the rooks should improve. Expecting a 6-10 season is not unrealistic even with Herm at the wheel.
Okay…let’s not get crazy.
January 13th, 2009 at 4:28 pmHere’s a better question. If Pioli had a case of the crazy and decided to keep Herm would you support that?
January 13th, 2009 at 4:29 pmPROFOOTBALL TALK is already saying SPAG is hired too
January 13th, 2009 at 4:31 pmMoose – it is an aircraft carrier from an organization standpoint. There’s a lot more to taking over the management of an NFL franchise than just hiring and firing of coaches. Scouting, free agency, draft, front office people, on and on.
January 13th, 2009 at 4:32 pmPeyton and Aikman, Holmgren and Coughlin took some time to turn their franchises around. GMs and QBs may be apples and oranges, but 4-12 looks a hell of a lot better next year in the direction we are headed than it did last year.
January 13th, 2009 at 4:33 pmRon Rivera for head coach.
He turned SD around when he took over as DC. Plus, the Bears defense has gone to crap with the same players as soon as he left. Track record on two teams.
January 13th, 2009 at 4:36 pmi have been pinching myself for an hour now
January 13th, 2009 at 4:37 pmrandy – the Spag “scoop” from PFT is nothing more than rumor/speculation at this point.
January 13th, 2009 at 4:42 pm24 – yes, for the time being.
January 13th, 2009 at 4:43 pmthey changed it to “could” double
January 13th, 2009 at 4:44 pmDouble D:
You remind me of my wife when she tells me that women do not have naked pillow fights in public restrooms…why must you kill my dreams
January 13th, 2009 at 4:47 pmMoose – you got any pictures of your wife by chance? Wanna buy some?
January 13th, 2009 at 4:50 pmI am going to reserve my rejoicing until such time as Herm is definitely history. I am afraid Clark may have brought Pioli in with the stipulation that Herm stays for one more year. I don’ think Pioli would be that stupid, but stranger things have happened. Virtually anyone who DOES replace Herm will be better because Herm is probably the worst head coach in this franchise’s history. Good riddance if he is truly out of here.
January 13th, 2009 at 4:58 pmIf Herm stays, that’s not the worse thing ever. Cowher, Shanny and Holmgrin will all be looking for work next year.
January 13th, 2009 at 5:07 pm[...] expected, the Chiefs blogs seem to be pleased with the hire. Of course, at this point, a different direction than the one being offered by [...]
January 13th, 2009 at 5:07 pmThe only good thing about Harm sticking around is that we can make fun of him.
January 13th, 2009 at 5:13 pmThis is the greatest day ever…and not a bad comment thread either.
January 13th, 2009 at 5:14 pmThe only good thing about Herm staying would be that all of Herm’s athletic supporters would be proven wrong. We would have another top choice in the draft and there would be no doubt about Herm’s inability to coach.
January 13th, 2009 at 5:35 pmAnd we DO NOT want you band wagon jumpers at all
January 13th, 2009 at 5:59 pmWell said, Bowe fan. But disgruntled long-time Chiefs fans are welcome to once again be excited about our once-proud franchise.
January 13th, 2009 at 6:01 pmAlways am PROUD of the chiefs the helmet is on my back for life……GO CHIEFS
January 13th, 2009 at 6:08 pmI will make this prediction, pretty much to piss you guys off! Herm stays and with a BETTER draft than last year, LJ being traded for picks, awesome D pick-ups in free agency and Pigpen staying as the QB, we win the division and at least one game in the playoffs. Quit being homers, take a look back and realize, if the D stops someone with up front pressure our DB’s play better and we end up winning at least six this year, maybe 8! We SHOULD have beaten SD twice. Saw the game here and SD was really not that good. My old high schoold team could have beaten SD when we played them in SD. We should have won here in SD, at home against SD, IN Denver, should have killed the Ben-Gals and maybe should have beaten the Jets and Miami. We didn’t. Not JUST because of bad Herm decisions(and yes like EVERY coach in the NFL, he made a few bad moves), but because of no pressure up the middle on D. Get us that in free agency or the draft and we might go more than one win in the playoffs next year. You do realize with the exception of the Ben-Gals game, we put up about (rough estimate off the top of my head. I am sure someone will have the actual numbers.) 21 points a game. With a good D you win games you score that many points in. Case in point look at Pittsburgh and Baltimore. Defense wins championships on more occasions than a Dick Vermiel style offensive juggernaut does!!!!
January 13th, 2009 at 8:07 pmUh, who’s being the homer?
January 13th, 2009 at 8:20 pmI am just reiterating that if we hold on D during the Jets, both SD, the Donkey game, kill the ben gals and maybe hold off Miami, our record would have been what, 8-8 and we hosting a playoff game instead of watching the bolts slide in. I still say you absolutely cannot blame a coach for the players missing tackles. Of course that is assuming Herm is coaching them good in practice which TG seems to say he is. So are you calling our beloved Tony a liar? I seriously doubt he would back Herm if he was as bad as almost EVERYONE on my favorite site seems to think. Did he make bad decisions, sure. That is not challenge. Can you actually name a coach that did NOT make a bad move this year? No you can’t, don’t even try.
January 13th, 2009 at 8:57 pmHerm is the worst game day on field coach I have ever seen. Give me a break. If if if. If is why everybody is getting fired.
January 13th, 2009 at 9:00 pmWell whatever happens, I still think we have a shot of at least winning the division next year. SD is starting to age and for some god for saken reason they are talking about trading LT! Denver well, they showed how great they aren’t at the end of this season and the Raiders are……..a bigger mess than our beloved Chiefs. I don’t care if they did win 3 more games than we did.
January 13th, 2009 at 9:06 pm[...] many of you already know, former Patriots vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli has taken over as the new Kansas City Chiefs GM today. It’s not like Mr. Pioli was even a canidate here [...]
January 13th, 2009 at 9:10 pmI’m going to Disney Land!
Wost GM to best GM in damn near less than a month.
I deserve this after 20 years. I remember 1989!
I feel like Morgan Freeman in Shawshank redemption. He is set free after 20 or more years in prison. He is so “institutionalized” he doesn’t know what to do with his new found freedom.
I guess a lot of you guys feel like that.
I guess we gota go find Tim Robbins building a boat or something?
January 13th, 2009 at 9:45 pmI don’t know if we are more like Red or Andy Dufresne? After all, we did crawl through a sewer of filth to get to this point.
January 13th, 2009 at 9:54 pmOh, Master, I better see you do a Blueprint of your own. Always enjoy reading your thoughts!
January 13th, 2009 at 9:55 pm[...] Herm Edwards is ousted, look for Pioli to put Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz at the top of his list. Good luck with that, Chiefs fans. Surely you will enjoy his Big Ten Championships and domination of the Big Ten translated to the [...]
January 14th, 2009 at 8:46 amGood points Vrod. I’m right there with you buddy. We had the Pats dead to rights too!
Randy – can you honestly say that any of the usual knocks on Herm i.e, “bad clock management, bad time outs, bad challenges, conservative offense” had anything to do with the outcomes of last seasons’ games?
No you can’t because more often than not, players either dropped balls that should have been caught, made stupid plays, gave up major yardage on third or long, or didn’t make the necessary stops when the game was on the line. None of those eff ups involved “second half adjustments,” or any other form of “bad coaching.”
Need I start in with our lack of protection on the right of the OL and how that led to a lack of a running game and the rotation of banged-up quarterbacks we had to endure? Or how about that fabulous group of linebackers that everybody was so high on going into the season?
Don’t even go there with me.
January 14th, 2009 at 9:20 amD how can you possibly say that none of that is a coaches fault? His bad decisions lead to a morale decline that cause “eff ups”. Thats my opinion.
